It is common practice to use needle-punched nonwoven geotextiles as puncture protection for geomembranes against sharp objects like gravel or stones in either the soil above or the underlying soil/rock below. There are several design and experimental methods available for geotextile selection in this regard. None, however, directly address the type of resin or fiber from which the geotextile is made. This paper does exactly that insofar as a direct comparison of similar mass per unit area polyester (PET) versus polypropylene (PP) geotextiles are concerned. Furthermore, two types of PP geotextiles are evaluated; one made from continuous filaments and the other from staple fibers. Three different size and shaped puncture probes are used in the testing program. All three are ASTM Standards, i.e., D4833, D5495 and D6241.The test results clearly indicate that geotextiles made from PP fibers outperform those made from PET fibers at all masses evaluated. Clearly, the present trend of using PP resin for heavy nonwoven protection geotextiles seems justified on the basis of these test results. New approaches for electroless plating of nonconductive polymers or polymer-based materials are described. In this work, polyimide substrates were surface-functionalized (i) in nitrogenated (ammonia at reduced pressure) and oxygenated (air at atmospheric pressure) atmospheres under assistance of vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation (use of a xenon silent discharge excimer source) or (ii) directly in air at atmospheric pressure using a dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) device. After functionalization, the substrates were “activated” by dipping in a dilute acidic PdCl2 solution or by spin-coating of a thin metal-organic film (from a solution of palladium acetate (PdAc) in chloroform). The catalytic activity of the so-deposited palladium species toward the electroless deposition of nickel was studied before and after a VUV post-irradiation (in air at atmospheric or reduced pressure) with a view to understanding better the role of the reducer (sodium hypophosphite) within the electroless bath.
This work confirms the specific interest of grafting nitrogenated functionalities onto polymer surfaces for attaching covalently the palladium-based catalyst (in particular in the case of the PdCl2 route), forming thus strong Pd - N - C bonds at the metal/polymer interface. This results from the strong chemical affinity of palladium toward nitrogen. On the other hand, when oxygenated functionalities are surface-grafted, the conventional two-step procedure using SnCl2 and PdCl2 solutions can be proposed due to the strong chemical affinity of tin toward oxygen. The Ni deposits obtained under these different conditions pass the standard Scotch®-tape test and, therefore, exhibit a good practical adhesion. For this same purpose, it is interesting to note that the DBD treatment operating in air at atmospheric pressure causes an increase of the surface roughness and, therefore, an improvement in adhesion of metallic films when their initiation is catalyzed through the PdAc route. In addition, this work demonstrates that extensive research still has to be performed to understand and improve the Ni/polymer adhesion when the PdAc route associated with a VUV irradiation is considered. 相似文献
Addition of small amounts (0.5-10 vol%) of multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNT) to thermoplastic elastomer Morthane produced polymer nanocomposites with high electrical conductivity (σ∼1-10 S/cm), low electrical percolation (?∼0.005) and enhancement of mechanical properties including increased modulus and yield stress without loss of the ability to stretch the elastomer above 1000% before rupture. In situ X-ray scattering during deformation indicated that these mechanical enhancements arise not only from the CNTs, but also from their impact on soft-segment crystallization. The deformation behavior after yielding of the nanocomposites, irrespective of CNT concentration, is similar to the unfilled elastomer, implying that the mechanistics of large deformation is mainly governed by the matrix. The relative enhancement of the Young's modulus of the nanocomposites is comparable to other elastomeric nanocomposites, implying that to the first order specific chemical details of the elastomeric system is unimportant. 相似文献
This paper describes the design, layout, construction and current status on the performance of fourteen full scale test plots targeted at assessing the internal shear strength of GCLs in landfill cover applications. Five different commercially available GCLs from four manufacturers were used in the study. Each test plot is two geosynthetic clay line roll widths wide, with lengths of 29m (95 ft) on the 3(H)-to-1(V) (horizontal-to-vertical) slopes and 20m (67 ft) on the 2(H)-to-1(V) (horizontal-to-vertical) slopes. The plots are being monitored with numerous deformation ‘telltales’ as well as subgrade and GCL moisture gages.
Two slides occurred shortly after construction. Both involved the upper surfaces of the GCLs against the overlying textured geomembranes. The slides were clearly the result of bentonite lubricated interfaces and (although of interest) did not relate to the internal shear strength focus and goals of the project.
Upon inducing internal shear stress in the GCLs by cutting all of the overlying geosynthetics, the deformations have been small except for one plot. This plot involved a unreinforced bentonite GCL, sandwiched between two geomembranes. It was sampled and found to have a large region of unexpected and excessively high moisture content. Subsequently, the test plot slid, the interface being the upper geomembrane against the bentonite of the GCL. The test plot was constructed a second time and the current response is more in keeping with the anticipated behaviour. Other than these slides, however, all of the other GCL plots appear to be stable.
If the internal stability of the GCLs continue, it can be assumed that the 2(H)-to-1(V) slopes have a factor-of-safety of 1.0 or greater. This being the case, the 3(H)-to-1(V) slopes have a factor-of-safety of 1.5 or greater. While this hypothesis is still being substantiated, it speaks well for the internal shear strength of the GCLs used in the study when properly installed. Perfluorinated acids (PFAs) are ubiquitously found in water and biota, including remote regions such as the High Arctic. Under environmental conditions, PFAs exist mainly as anions and are not expected to be subject to long-range atmospheric transport in the gas phase. Fluorinated telomer alcohols (FTOHs) are volatile and can be atmospherically oxidized to form perfluorocarboxylic acids. Analogously, fluorosulfamido alcohols can be oxidized to form perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). High Arctic ice caps experience contamination solely from atmospheric sources. By examining concentrations of PFAs in ice cap samples, it is possible to determine atmospheric fluxes to the Arctic. Ice samples were collected from high Arctic ice caps in the spring of 2005 and 2006. Samples were concentrated using solid-phase extraction and analyzed by LC-MS-MS. PFAs were observed in all samples, dating from 1996 to 2005. Concentrations were in the low-mid pg L(-1) range and exhibited seasonality, with maximum concentrations in the spring-summer. The presence of perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) and perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnA) on the ice cap was indicative of atmospheric oxidation as a source. Ratios of PFAs to sodium concentrations were highly variable, signifying PFA concentrations on the ice cap were unrelated to marine chemistry. Fluxes of the PFAs were estimated to the area north of 65 degrees N for the 2005 season, which ranged from 114 to 587 kg year(-1) for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), 73 to 860 kg year(-1) for perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), 16 to 84 kg year(-1) for PFDA, 26 to 62 kg year(-1) for PFUnA, and 18 to 48 kg year(-1) for PFOS. The PFOA and PFNA fluxes agreed with FTOH modeling estimations. A decrease in PFOS concentrations through time was observed, suggesting a fast response to changes in production. These data suggest that atmospheric oxidation of volatile precursors is a primary source of PFAs to the Arctic. 相似文献
Two yeast/E. coli shuttle vectors have been constructed. The two vectors, YEp351 and YEp352, have the following properties: (1) they can replicate autonomously in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and in E. coli; (2) they contain the beta-lactamase gene and confer ampicillin resistance to E. coli; (3) they contain the entire sequence of pUC18; (4) all ten restriction sites of the multiple cloning region of pUC18 including EcoRI, SacI, KpnI, SmaI, BamHI, XbaI, SalI, PstI, SphI and HindIII are unique in YEp352; these sites are also unique in YEp351 except for EcoRI and KpnI, which occur twice; (5) recombinant plasmids with DNA inserts in the multiple cloning region of YEp351 and YEp352 can be recognised by loss of beta-galactosidase function in appropriate E. coli hosts; (6) YEp351 and YEp352 contain the yeast LEU2 and URA3 genes, respectively, allowing for selection of these auxotrophic markers in yeast and E. coli; (7) both plasmids are retained with high frequency in yeast grown under non-selective conditions indicative of high plasmid copy number. The above properties make the shuttle vectors suitable for construction of yeast genomic libraries and for cloning of DNA fragments defined by a large number of different restriction sites. The two vectors have been further modified by deletion of the sequences necessary for autonomous replication in yeast. The derivative plasmids YIp351 and YIp352 can therefore be used to integrate specific sequences into yeast chromosomal DNA. 相似文献
BACKGROUND: Interhospital differences in blood transfusion practice during coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery have been noted, but the underlying issues have not been identified. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Records of 3217 consecutive CABG cases in five university teaching hospitals in 1992 and 1993 were stratified by hospital, type of revascularization conduit, patients' sex, and other factors. Statistical methods were used to compare patient characteristics, transfusion outcomes, and hospital outcomes. RESULTS: Forward two-step logistic regression using patient likelihood of red cell transfusion factors in the first step and the specific hospital in the second step revealed a significant effect of hospital on the delta odds ratios for red cell transfusion. This finding was confirmed by analyses of a highly stratified subset of cases, males in diagnosis-related group 107 (primary cases of coronary bypass without coronary catheterization) who underwent revascularization with venous and internal mammary artery grafts, revealing variations among hospitals from 109 to 457 units of red cells transfused per hundred cases. Corresponding variations in transfusions of all blood components were from 324 to 1019 units by hospital. Variation in red cell transfusion practice among surgeons in the same hospital was not responsible for these interhospital differences. CONCLUSION: The effect of the specific hospital on transfusion practice is attributed to institutional differences that, through reasons of training or hierarchy, become ingrained in hospitals. 相似文献
beta Pictoris is the best known example of a main-sequence star encircled by a tenuous disk. Optical and infrared images of beta Pic suggest that the disk is composed of dust grains which have been interpreted as the debris generated by the disruption of the asteroid-sized remnants of planet-formation processes. The star itself is relatively old, with an age in excess of 100 Myr. Here we present high-resolution millimetre-wave images of continuum and molecular-line emission from dust and gas surrounding a much younger star, MWC480: the stellar properties of MWC480 are similar to those of beta Pic, but its age is just 6Myr. The morphology of the circumstellar material and a comparison with the predictions of kinematic modelling indicate the presence of a rotating disk, gravitationally bound to the star. Moreover, the mass of the disk is greater than the minimum required to form a planetary system like our own. We therefore suggest that the disk around the young star MWC480 could be a progenitor of debris disks of the type associated with older stars such as beta Pic, and so holds much promise for the study of both the origin of debris disks and the early stages of the formation of planetary systems. 相似文献
