Recent work suggests that while voluntary episodic memory declines with age, involuntary episodic memory, which comes to mind spontaneously without intention, remains relatively intact. However, the neurophysiology underlying these differences has yet to be established. The current study used electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate voluntary and involuntary retrieval in older and younger adults. Participants first encoded sounds, half of which were paired with pictures, the other half unpaired. EEG was then recorded as they listened to the sounds, with participants in the involuntary group performing a sound localization cover task, and those in the voluntary group additionally attempting to recall the associated pictures. Participants later reported which sounds brought the paired picture to mind during the localization task. Reaction times on the localization task were slower for voluntary than involuntary retrieval and for paired than unpaired sounds, possibly reflecting increased attentional demands of voluntary retrieval and interference from reactivation of the associated pictures respectively. For the EEG analyses, young adults showed greater alpha event-related desynchronization (ERD) during voluntary than involuntary retrieval at frontal and occipital sites, while older adults showed pronounced alpha ERD regardless of intention. Additionally, older adults showed greater ERD for paired than unpaired sounds at occipital sites, likely reflecting visual reactivation of the associated pictures. Young adults did not show this alpha ERD memory effect. Taken together, these data suggest that involuntary memory is largely preserved with age, but this may be due to older adults' greater recruitment of top-down control even when demand for such control is limited. 相似文献

Objective: Pediatric brain tumor survivors (PBTSs) are at risk for impairments in social adjustment and psychological distress. This study investigated longitudinal associations between symptoms of social withdrawal and anxiety/depression in PBTS, as well as medical, demographic, and personal characteristics that may also influence reports of social withdrawal and anxiety/depression.
Method: About 91 PBTS (51% male, mean age 11.21?years, off-treatment) participated. At baseline and 8?months follow-up, primary caregivers of PBTS completed measures of social withdrawal, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Medical information (e.g. tumor type and location, cranial irradiation therapy) and child personal characteristics (e.g. child’s age and gender, executive function, social skills) were obtained at baseline.
Results: Baseline reports of depression symptoms and social skills predicted social withdrawal 8?months later. Social withdrawal at baseline predicted greater combined anxiety and depression symptoms 8?months later. Depression alone predicted greater anxiety symptoms at follow-up. Anxiety symptoms and poor global executive functioning predicted greater depression symptoms at follow-up.
Conclusions: The social adjustment and psychological distress of PBTSs are interrelated and can influence each other across time. These findings support the importance of multifaceted interventions targeting both psychological distress and social adjustment, in order to support the optimal psychosocial adjustment of PBTSs. 相似文献
Despite common experiences of identity damage, decline, and deterioration, many brain injury survivors succeed in reconstructing robust identities in the wake of injury. Yet, while this accomplishment greatly benefits survivors’ quality of life, little is known about how positive identity work might be facilitated or enhanced in therapeutic institutions. Drawing on data from a women’s self-help group, we argue that an egalitarian, reflective, strength-focused, and gender-segregated environment can provide female ABI (acquired brain injury) survivors with a fertile scene for identity enhancement and offer unique opportunities for collective identity development. Sociolinguistic interactional analysis revealed four types of positive identity work undertaken within the group: constructing competent selves; tempering the threat of loss and impairment; resisting infantilisation and delegitimisation; and asserting a collective gender identity. This identity work was facilitated by specific programme attributes and activities and contributed to the global project of decentring disability and destigmatising impairments and losses. We call for increased attention to identity issues in brain injury rehabilitation and argue that gender-segregated programming can provide a unique space for female survivors to construct empowering individual and collective identities after injury. 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of an extracorporeal bioartificial liver containing alginate bead-entrapped hepatocytes on pigs with ischemia-induced acute hepatic failure. DESIGN: Prospective animal study. SETTING: University and INSERM laboratory. SUBJECTS: Fifteen Large White/Pietrin female pigs weighing 20-30 kg. INTERVENTIONS: Acute hepatic failure was induced by end-to-side portocaval shunt and ligature of the whole porta hepatitis. The bioartificial liver was in a thermostabilized column, containing a fluidized bed of alginate beads that embedded porcine hepatocytes, connected to a plasmapheresis system. Intracranial pressure; survival; ammonia, total bilirubin, aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate concentrations; and clotting factors were studied. The groups were pigs with acute hepatic failure (group 1, n = 4), pigs with acute hepatic failure treated with bioartificial liver containing empty beads (group 2, n = 4), or porcine hepatocytes (group 3, n = 5). MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: In group 1, survival of pigs averaged 10.9 +/- 1.0 hrs; intracranial pressure reached 32.3 +/- 3.8 mm Hg and was associated with coma and cerebral edema. After connection to the bioartificial liver, the survival of acute hepatic failure pigs was 12.1 +/- 1.4 hrs in group 2 and 14.8 +/- 2.5 hrs in group 3. In group 3, intracranial pressure and bilirubin concentrations were reduced significantly compared with both group 1 and group 2. Neither signs of encephalopathy nor cerebral edema was observed in any animal of group 3. In all animals, plasma ammonium, aminotransferases, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate concentrations increased and clotting factors decreased with no significant differences between the three groups. Autopsy revealed a total necrosis of the liver, which was histologically confirmed. CONCLUSIONS: The ischemia-induced model of acute hepatic failure in pigs is reproducible and provides measurable clinical and biological features. A bioartificial liver containing alginate bead-entrapped hepatocytes improves the signs of encephalopathy in pigs with ischemia-induced acute hepatic failure, suggesting that the bioartificial liver can clear out toxic compounds that are released from necrotic livers. 相似文献
A rapid, semiautomated microdilution method was developed for measuring the activity of potential antimalarial drugs against cultured intraerythrocytic asexual forms of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Microtitration plates were used to prepare serial dilutions of the compounds to be tested. Parasites, obtained from continuous stock cultures, were subcultured in these plates for 42 h. Inhibition of uptake of a radiolabeled nucleic acid precursor by the parasites served as the indicator of antimalarial activity. Results of repeated measurements of activity with chloroquine, quinine, and the investigational new drug mefloquine demonstrated that the method is sensitive and precise. Several additional antimalarial drugs and compounds of interest were tested in vitro, and the results were consistent with available in vivo data. The use of P. falciparum isolates with known susceptibility to antimalarial drugs also permitted evaluation of the cross-resistance potential of each compound tested. The applications and expectations of this new test system within a drug development program are discussed. 相似文献
An all-optical ultrasound probe for vascular tissue imaging was developed. Ultrasound was generated by pulsed laser illumination of a functionalized carbon nanotube composite coating on the end face of an optical fiber. Ultrasound was detected with a Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity on the end face of an adjacent optical fiber. The probe diameter was < 0.84 mm and had an ultrasound bandwidth of ~20 MHz. The probe was translated across the tissue sample to create a virtual linear array of ultrasound transmit/receive elements. At a depth of 3.5 mm, the axial resolution was 64 µm and the lateral resolution was 88 µm, as measured with a carbon fiber target. Vascular tissues from swine were imaged ex vivo and good correspondence to histology was observed.OCIS codes: (110.5125) Photoacoustics, (110.2350) Fiber optics imaging, (060.2380) Fiber optics sources and detectors, (170.7170) Ultrasound, (170.0110) Imaging systems相似文献
