Mercury (Hg) is an environmental pollutant that impacts human and ecosystem health. In our previous works, we reported alterations in the properties of Mytilus galloprovincialis protamine-like (PL) proteins after 24 h of exposure to subtoxic doses of toxic metals such as copper and cadmium. The present work aims to assess the effects of 24 h of exposure to 1, 10, and 100 pM HgCl2 on spermatozoa and PL proteins of Mytilus galloprovincialis. Inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry indicated accumulation of this metal in the gonads of exposed mussels. Further, RT-qPCR analyses showed altered expression levels of spermatozoa mt10 and hsp70 genes. In Mytilus galloprovincialis, PL proteins represent the major basic component of sperm chromatin. These proteins, following exposure of mussels to HgCl2, appeared, by SDS-PAGE, partly as aggregates and showed a decreased DNA-binding capacity that rendered them unable to prevent DNA damage, in the presence of CuCl2 and H2O2. These results demonstrate that even these doses of HgCl2 exposure could affect the properties of PL proteins and result in adverse effects on the reproductive system of this organism. A weekly monitoring campaign of volatile organic compounds (VOC), with single sampling of 24 h, was carried out in non-residential indoor environments such as libraries, pharmacies, offices, gymnasiums, etc., in order to evaluate the VOC concentrations to which people are exposed. Moreover, an outdoor sample was coupled to each indoor site to point out the influence of indoor sources. They were sampled with Radiello diffusive samplers for thermal desorption and analyzed by GC-MS. As already described in other papers, the VOC levels of most of the indoor sites were higher than that observed in the corresponding outdoor sites. For example, some sites showed a level of pollution that is ten times higher than their corresponding outdoor site. The monitored environments that had higher concentrations of the investigated VOC were the pharmacies, a newspaper stand, a copy center, and the coffee shops. Analysis of the weekly average concentrations of each pollutant and the use of literature allowed pointing out some site-specific characteristics that singled out possible sources of VOC. These results were verified analyzing the indoor-outdoor ratio (I/O) too. Newspaper stands were characterized by very high concentrations of toluene and pharmacies were characterized by high concentrations of aromatic compounds. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Indoor air pollution caused by volatile organic compounds (VOC) might affect human health at home as well as in public and commercial buildings. The main VOC sources in indoor environments are human activities, personal care products, smoking, house cleaning products, building products, and outside pollution. To preserve human health it is necessary to evaluate the average concentrations of VOC to which people are exposed and to identify the main sources of indoor pollution by means of suitable indoor monitoring campaigns in several environments. This article examines the effects of structural changes and thermal aging treatments on the relaxation processes and mechanical
properties of three polyimides differing for their molecular structure i.e. PMDA-ODA, 6FDA-ODA, and 6FDA-6FpDA. These polyimides
were obtained by thermal imidization of their polyamic acid precursors, which were synthesized from the respective dianhydrides
[pyromellitic anhydride (PMDA), hexahydrofluoroisopropylidene diphthalic anhydride (6FDA)], and diamines [4,4′-diaminodiphenyl
ether (ODA), 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) dianiline (6FpDA)]. After the curing process, the polyimides were thermally aged
at a fixed temperature for various times Dynamic mechanical measurements performed in a multi-frequency mode, were used to
determine the glass-rubber and sub-glass transitions, as well as the activation energy of the β transition. It was found that
the T
g decreased in the order PMDA-ODA > 6FDA-6FpDA > 6FDA-ODA as a result of an increased chain rigidity and molecular packing
induced by charge transfer interactions during the thermal imidization process. The β sub-glass transition showed two relaxation
processes identified as β′ and β′′. The β′ process was attributed to the local motion of the diamine constituents while the
β′′ process was caused by the local motion of the dianhydride moiety. The cooperativity of these molecular motions was also
assessed via the Starkweather method. The thermal aging enhanced the state of aggregation of polyimide chains and thus the
T
g and the sub-glass transition properties. This effect was particularly marked for the PMDA-ODA polyimide. Also the mechanical
properties were significantly affected by chemical structure and aging treatments. For non-aged samples the more influenced
parameter was the elongation at break, which decreased in the order PMDA-ODA > 6FDA-ODA > 6FDA-6FpDA. The aging enhanced the

In the present study, the chemical composition and antioxidant activities of Teucrium polium L. (Lamiaceae) were assessed. Fractionation of methanol extract obtained from the aerial parts of T. polium yielded one new phenylethanoid glycoside, named poliumoside B, together with four known flavonoids, two iridoid glycosides and a known poliumoside. The structures of all of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data from 1D and 2D NMR experiments and MS spectral analyses. The antioxidant activities of the crude extracts and of the isolated compounds were evaluated through tests such as DPPH radical-scavenging capability, reducing power, xanthine oxidase inhibitory effect and inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation. The highest antioxidant activity was found in the n-butanol extract, which also contained active polyphenols, thus suggesting that this plant could be used as a source of natural molecules, to provide safe antioxidant additives and nutraceuticals. The structure–activity relationships of the isolated compounds are also discussed. 相似文献

This paper presents the results of an extensive series of simulation tests to identify the mechanical characteristics of an innovative isolation device known as the Roll-N-Cage (RNC) isolator. The seismic performance of an RNC passive control scheme is subsequently investigated on a model of the cable-stayed bridge benchmark. Starting from different configurations studied in the laboratory for a 1/10 reduced-scale prototype, the RNC isolator stiffness and damping properties are investigated in terms of cyclic tests with different parameters. Tests at the ultimate level state consisting of monotonic shear and axial loading have been also carried out as a part of the qualification process. The goal of this study is twofold: first, to examine the main integrated mechanisms of the RNC isolator through sophisticated 3D finite element simulation models using a multi-purpose finite element code. The main result of this step is to attempt modeling the force–displacement relationship using the standard Bouc–Wen model of smooth hysteresis. The second aim of this study is the numerical assessment of the device efficiency through its implementation into a bridge model considering several ground motions as external excitations. Based on these extensive studies, it was found that the RNC isolator is promising as a reliable isotropic horizontal isolation device for bridge structures. 相似文献

Chemical oxidation of multilayer graphene grown on silicon carbide yields films exhibiting reproducible characteristics, lateral uniformity, smoothness over large areas, and manageable chemical complexity, thereby opening opportunities to accelerate both fundamental understanding and technological applications of this form of graphene oxide films. Here, we investigate the vertical inter‐layer structure of these ultra‐thin oxide films. X‐ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and IR experiments show that the multilayer films exhibit excellent inter‐layer registry, little amount (<10%) of intercalated water, and unexpectedly large interlayer separations of about 9.35 Å. Density functional theory calculations show that the apparent contradiction of “little water but large interlayer spacing in the graphene oxide films” can be explained by considering a multilayer film formed by carbon layers presenting, at the nanoscale, a non‐homogenous oxidation, where non‐oxidized and highly oxidized nano‐domains coexist and where a few water molecules trapped between oxidized regions of the stacked layers are sufficient to account for the observed large inter‐layer separations. This work sheds light on both the vertical and intra‐layer structure of graphene oxide films grown on silicon carbide, and more in general, it provides novel insight on the relationship between inter‐layer spacing, water content, and structure of graphene/graphite oxide materials. 相似文献
