The imprinted domain in mouse distal Chromosome 7: reagents for mutagenesis and sequencing

BACKGROUND: Right lower quadrant abdominal pain may pose a diagnostic problem in patients with cystic fibrosis. Abdominal ultrasound examination, used commonly in the diagnostic work-up, may reveal abnormalities of the appendix. However, interpretation of such findings is problematic, because the appearance of the gastrointestinal system during routine examination has not been documented in patients with cystic fibrosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the findings during routine abdominal ultrasound scans in our cohort of patients with cystic fibrosis and in control subjects. METHODS: Abdominal ultrasound scans were performed prospectively during routine clinic visits in a cohort of patients with cystic fibrosis. RESULTS: Fifty patients aged 10+/-6 years, (range, 0.5-28 years) were examined; 45 had pancreatic insufficiency. Four patients (3 with pancreatic insufficiency) reported right lower quadrant pain at the time of the scan. According to standard ultrasound criteria, the appearance of the appendix was abnormal in 8 patients (16%), 6 had a mucoid appendix, and 2 had a pathologically thickened appendiceal wall. Only 1 of these 8 patients mentioned abdominal pain at the time of the study. Other incidental findings included gallstones (3 patients), intussusception (2 patients), and pancreatic cyst (1 patient). CONCLUSIONS: Abnormalities can be observed during routine abdominal ultrasonographic studies in cystic fibrosis. These findings may not be associated with abdominal pain; their clinical relevance needs further investigation.     

A gene for autosomal recessive symmetrical spastic cerebral palsy maps to chromosome 2q24-25

Cerebral palsy has an incidence of approximately 1/500 births, although this varies between different ethnic groups. Genetic forms of the disease account for approximately 1%-2% of cases in most countries but contribute a larger proportion in populations with extensive inbreeding. We have clinically characterized consanguineous families with multiple children affected by symmetrical spastic cerebral palsy, to locate recessive genes responsible for this condition. The eight families studied were identified from databases of patients in different regions of the United Kingdom. After ascertainment and clinical assessment, we performed a genomewide search for linkage, using 290 polymorphic DNA markers. In three families, a region of homozygosity at chromosome 2q24-q25 was identified between the markers D2S124 and D2S148. The largest family gave a maximum LOD score of 3.0, by multipoint analysis (HOMOZ). The maximum combined multipoint LOD score for the three families was 5.75. The minimum region of homozygosity is approximately 5 cM between the markers D2S124 and D2S2284. We have shown that a proportion of autosomal recessive symmetrical spastic cerebral palsy maps to chromosome 2q24-25. The identification of genes involved in the etiology of cerebral palsy may lead to improved management of this clinically intractable condition.     

Blue LED growth from 2 inch to 8 inch

Growth of blue InGaN based LED structures on sapphire wafers from 2 inch to 8 inch in diameter was investigated using the Veeco K465 MOCVD platform. Our results indicate that the same pressure,rotation rate and hydride flows can be used for all wafer sizes. AFM and X-ray studies reveal that all wafer sizes have comparable high-quality crystallinity and defect levels for GaN and InGaN/GaN MQW growth. Cyclopropene fatty acids of selected seed oils from bombacaceae,malvaceae, and sterculiaceae

Fatty acid compositions of seed oils from three species of Bombacaceae, eleven from Malvaceae, and six from Sterculiaceae were determined. Each of the seed oils contains varying amounts of both malvalic and sterculic acids accompanied by one or both of the corresponding cyclopropane fatty acids. In addition, the seed oil ofPachira aquatic Aubl. (Bombacaeae) contains 12.8% α-hydroxysterculic acid.     

γ-Linolenic acid inAcer seed oils

The octadecatrienoic acids inAcer negundo L. (maple family) seed oil include both 9,12,15- (1%) and 6.9,12-(7%) isomers. The chief monoenoic acids identified were 9-octadecenoic (21%), 11-eicosenoic (7%), 13-docosenoic (15%), and 15-tetracosenoic (7%). Also present is a considerable amount of 9,12-octadecadienoic acid. Investigation of ten other Aceraceae revealed their seed oils to have a similar fatty acid composition.     

Fatty acid composition of seed oils of the meliaceae,including one genus rich incis-vaccenic acid

The seed lipids of three species ofEntandraphragma (Meliaceae) contain the largest proportion (31–50%) ofcis-vaccenic acid ever found in nature. The acid is not indicative of the family as a whole and is found as a major fatty acid in the seed of only one additional species, besidesEntandraphragma, out of the 30 analyzed from this family. With the total oil comprising between 45 and 62% ofEntandraphragma seed, these species should be considered as a source of undecadioic acid for the production of nylon 11.     

Palmitoleic acid inRoureopsis obliquifoliata (Connaraceae) Seed oil

Roureopsis obliquifoliata Schellenberg seeds contain an oil (45% by weight) comprised primarily of 16-carbon fatty acids. Palmitic acid constitutes 50% of the fatty acids, palmitoleic acid 32%, and small amounts of the usual C₁₈ acids make up the remainder. Identifications were based on Chromatographic properties of the acids and their ozonolysis products.     

Detection of spermaceti in a hand cream

The presence of spermaceti, an embargoed item, was confirmed in a sample of hand cream detained by federal agents. The identification was based on chromatographic characteristics of the intact wax esters and of their component fatty acids and alcohols. These acids and alcohols were combined in a manner so closely resembling spermaceti that they undoubtedly came from this source.     

Myristicin. The major volatile component in mature seed ofPortenschlagia ramosissima

Portenschlagia ramosissima (Port.) vis. (Umbelliferae) seed contains 15% essential oils, 70% of which is the aromatic ether myristicin. These structural assignments were made from nuclear magnetic resonance, combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and infrared and ultraviolet data. GC-MS data also indicate the presence of pinene, cymene, terpinene, elemicin, methyl eugenol, and a variety of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons.
