Background

There is evidence that geographic variability of social health inequalities continues to exist even after individual risk factors have been taken into account. However, relatively few studies have examined the contribution of exposure to air pollutants to those inequalities.

Objectives

To study the geographic variability of inequalities in mortality and their associations with socioeconomic and environmental inequalities in small areas of the metropolitan of Barcelona during the period 1994 to 2003.

Methods

As in the MEDEA Project, the small area unit was the census tract. Study population consisted of the residents of the metropolitan area of Barcelona. Response variables were all-cause and specific-cause standardized mortality ratio (SMR). Explanatory variables were deprivation index, summarizing socioeconomic variables of the census tracts, and estimates of air pollutant exposures. Bayesian hierarchical models were used in order to reduce the extra variability when using SMR and to assess associations between mortality and deprivation and air pollution.

Results

Statistically significant associations with deprivation were found for the causes of death related to consumption of tobacco and alcohol for men and, besides lung cancer, diet-related causes for women. Statistically significant pollution coefficients were only found in the metropolitan area of Barcelona and in men. A positive interaction between pollutants and the deprivation index was statistically significant for respiratory mortality and PM10, and ischemic disease mortality and NO2, both for men.

Conclusions

We found deprivation to be associated in a statistically significant way with the geographical variation in mortality in the census tracts of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, in the period 1994 to 2003. Those air pollutants more directly related with traffic modify some of these associations.  相似文献

Non‐cryptographic hash functions (NCHFs) have an immense number of applications, ranging from compilers and databases to videogames and computer networks. Some of the most important NCHF have been used by major corporations in commercial products. This practical success demonstrates the ability of hashing systems to provide extremely efficient searches over unsorted sets. However, very little research has been devoted to the experimental evaluation of these functions. Therefore, we evaluated the most widely used NCHF using four criteria as follows: collision resistance, distribution of outputs, avalanche effect, and speed. We identified their strengths and weaknesses and found significant flaws in some cases. We also discuss our conclusions regarding general hashing considerations such as selection of the compression map. Our results should assist practitioners and engineers in making more informed choices regarding which function to use for a particular problem. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The desiccating effects of two different types of diatomaceous earths (DEs), of freshwater and marine origin, applied by two different methods, were compared on four species of insects, Cryptolestes ferrugineus, Rhyzopertha dominica, Sitophilus oryzae and Sitophilus granarius. The purpose was to investigate the performance of DEs, including their abrasive and absorptive effects through the accumulation of silica dusts on the insect cuticle, resulting in death of the insects by desiccation. The data obtained showed that similar insects treated with the same type of diatom, but applied either by spraying or dusting, did not have the same initial mortality rate.

After examining and comparing the data obtained, it appeared that weight loss at death of insects subjected to the action of sprayed DEs was slightly less than for insects subjected to dust application, while mortality was slightly more rapid during the observation period. The extra weight of dusted insects was ascribed to greater adherence of dust particles to the treated insects.  相似文献

The discovery of the superantigens (SAgs) offered new insights on the interaction between microorganisms and the host immune system. Associated to Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) class II molecules, SAgs bind to the variable domain of the beta chain (V beta) of the TCR alpha beta engaged in the family specificity of lymphocytes. Therefore, these molecules are able to activate a high number of T lymphocytes as well as surface MHC class II bearing cells, leading to an overriding release of cytokines and inflammatory mediators, which have been related to their toxic effects. Endogenous SAgs are encoded by murine tumor proviruses (Mtv) which are integrated in the genome of mice. Bacteria and viruses produce exogenous SAgs and those related to food poisoning have been widely studied. The presence of parasite SAgs is still unclear and further studies are required to establish their existence and effects on the corresponding infections.  相似文献

A 60-year-old man was admitted at his local hospital for persistent chest pain and suspicion of aortic dissection. No evidence of aortic dissection or intimal disruption was noted by means of computed tomography and transesophageal echocardiography. A localized intramural hematoma of the ascending aorta was found. He was first treated medically and remained asymptomatic for 8 days when he developed a new episode of chest pain. He was found to have an acute type A dissection by computed tomography. He underwent graft replacement of the ascending aorta and had an uneventful post-operative course. This case report describes the development of true aortic dissection in a patient who previously had a localized intramural hematoma.  相似文献

We classify and analyze bit errors in the current measurement mode of the Kirchhoff-law–Johnson-noise (KLJN) key distribution. The error probability decays exponentially with increasing bit exchange period and fixed bandwidth, which is similar to the error probability decay in the voltage measurement mode. We also analyze the combination of voltage and current modes for error removal. In this combination method, the error probability is still an exponential function that decays with the duration of the bit exchange period, but it has superior fidelity to the former schemes.  相似文献

The CDKN2A gene located on chromosome region 9p21 encodes the cyclin-dependent kinase-4 inhibitor p16/INK4A, a negative cell cycle regulator. We analyzed p16/INK4A expression in different types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma to determine whether the absence of this protein is involved in lymphomagenesis, while also trying to characterize the genetic events underlying this p16/INK4A loss. To this end, we investigated the levels of p16/INK4A protein using immunohistochemical techniques in 153 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, using as reference the levels found in reactive lymphoid tissue. The existence of gene mutation, CpG island methylation, and allelic loss were investigated in a subset of 26 cases, using single-strand conformational polymorphism and direct sequencing, Southern Blot, polymerase chain reaction, and microsatellite analysis, respectively. Loss of p16/INK4A expression was detected in 41 of the 112 non-Hodgkin's lymphomas studied (37%), all of which corresponded to high-grade tumors. This loss of p16/INK4A was found more frequently in cases showing tumor progression from mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue low-grade lymphomas (31 of 37) or follicular lymphomas (4 of 4) into diffuse large B-cell lymphomas. Analysis of the status of the p16/INK4A gene showed different genetic alterations (methylation of the 5'-CpG island of the p16/INK4A gene, 6 of 23 cases; allelic loss at 9p21, 3 of 16 cases; and nonsense mutation, 1 of 26 cases). In all cases, these events were associated with loss of the p16/INK4A protein. No case that preserved protein expression contained any genetic change. Our results demonstrate that p16/INK4A loss of expression contributes to tumor progression in lymphomas. The most frequent genetic alterations found were 5'-CpG island methylation and allelic loss.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of Duplex scanning in detecting renovascular disease and to compare it with angiography, renal scintigraphy and captopril test for plasma renin activity and isotopic renography. A Duplex scan was performed in 92 renal arteries (46 patients) and compared to angiography. Three degrees of stenoses were established: 0-60%, 61-99% and occlusion. The peak systolic velocity (PSV) in the renal artery and its ratio to the peak velocity in the aorta (RAR) were used to discriminate stenoses > 60%. PSV in the interlobar arteries was used to assess the relative perfusion of both parenchyma. Angiography demonstrated a stenoses > 60% in 23 hypertensive patients. In all of the patients, plasma renin activity was measured and isotopic renograms (pre- and post-captopril) obtained in order to discriminate hypertension of vascular origin. A PSV in the renal artery > 210 cm/s and a RAR > 3.5 were found to be the diagnostic criteria with the best sensitivity and specificity in detecting stenoses > 60%. Based on these data, Duplex correctly identified 49/54 stenoses > 60%; 28/33 stenoses < 60%; and 5/5 occlusions (kappa 0.79). Sensitivity and specificity in detecting stenoses > 60% were 89.5 and 90.7%, respectively. The ratio between PSV in the interlobar arteries of both parenchyma accurately predicted the relative perfusion (ratio between DTPA uptake in both kidneys) in the isotopic test (n = 23, r = 0.91, p = 0.001). The direct coupling of a Gas Cooled Reactor (GCR) with a closed gas-turbine cycle leads to a specific dynamic plant behaviour. This behaviour is described and illustrated through computer analyses performed at CEA with the computer code CATHARE. This analysis requires a 1D code able to simulate the whole reactor, including the core, the vessel, the piping and the components (turbine, compressors, heat exchangers).This paper is devoted to deblading accidents. The problems and solutions encountered in various types of gas-turbines are presented: aero engines, steam turbines (EDF-Porcheville steam turbine accident feedback) and finally the feedback from previous High Temperature Gas Reactor experiments (EVO helium loop, HHT project and other HTR projects) are displayed. From this literature survey, some recommendations are drawn for a future High Temperature Reactor. It is shown that for safety reasons in case of deblading, a horizontal shaft aligned with the reactor vessel is recommended for the turbomachinery.This paper presents simulations of different scenarii performed with CATHARE code:
(a) Turbine deblading with and without reactor trip. In these calculations, a pessimistic assumption has been made: all turbine blades break off.
(b) Total flow blockage. The flow area is entirely blocked by the turbine blades.
(c) Partial flow blockage. Previous conclusions consider the worst cases of deblading and total flow blockage. An intermediate case based on a partial deblading has also been performed.
CATHARE results illustrate that the loss of turbine blades is accompanied by abrupt changes in the Power Conversion System and reactor flow conditions: large axial pressure drop, reverse flow through the core and high rate de-pressurization.  相似文献
