Doxorubicin increases endothelial permeability, hence increasing cardiomyocytes’ exposure to doxorubicin (DOX) and exposing myocytes to more immediate damage. Reactive oxygen species are major effector molecules of doxorubicin’s activity. Mangiferin (MGN) is a xanthone derivative that consists of C-glucosylxanthone with additional antioxidant properties. This particular study assessed the effects of MGN on DOX-induced cytotoxicity in human umbilical vein endothelial cells’ (HUVECs’) signaling networks. Mechanistically, MGN dramatically elevated Nrf2 expression at both the messenger RNA and protein levels through the upregulation of the PI3K/AKT pathway, leading to an increase in Nrf2-downstream genes. Cell apoptosis was assessed with a caspase-3 activity assay, transferase-mediated dUTP-fluorescein nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining was performed to assess DNA fragmentation, and protein expression was determined by Western blot analysis. DOX markedly increased the generation of reactive oxygen species, PARP, caspase-3, and TUNEL-positive cell numbers, but reduced the expression of Bcl-2 and antioxidants’ intracellular concentrations. These were effectively antagonized with MGN (20 μM), which led to HUVECs being protected against DOX-induced apoptosis, partly through the PI3K/AKT-mediated NRF2/HO-1 signaling pathway, which could theoretically protect the vessels from severe DOX toxicity. 相似文献

Calcium silicate ceramics have received significant attention for biomedical applications for their excellent bioactivity and osteoconduction properties. Sol-gel process is extensively used for the fabrication of calcium silicates. In sol-gel process, calcium nitrate tetra hydrate (Ca(NO3)2·4H2O) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) are used as precursors. However, these precursors are expensive. The objective of this work was to compare in vitro behavior of calcium silicate (CaSiO3) produced using biowaste such as rice husk ash (RHA) and eggshells (coded; NCS) with CaSiO3 prepared using TEOS and Ca(NO3)2·4H2O (coded; CCS). Thermal investigation results revealed that the crystallization temperature for NCS is relatively lower (772°C) than for CCS (870°C). Bioactivity was studied in vitro using simulated body fluid (SBF) with respect to mineralization rate of hydroxyapatite. Mineralization of a greater hydroxyapatite was observed on NCS ceramics than CCS ceramics after incubation for 3, 7, 14 days in SBF solution, which was confirmed using X-ray diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy. Degradation studies were conducted in Tris-HCl solution and the test results revealed that NCS ceramics has lower dissolution rate than CCS ceramics. The antimicrobial assay has shown that NCS samples exhibit significant zone of inhibition against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus which confirmed that the CaSiO3 prepared from RHA and eggshell can prevent bacteria from adhering to the surface. In addition cell culture studies revealed that NCS ceramics possess good cytocompatibility with MG-63 cells and significantly promoted cell proliferation. 相似文献

A rectangular fluidized bed setup was developed to study the evolution of inlet gas jets located at the distributor. Experiments were conducted with varying distributor types and bed media to understand the motion of particles and jets in the grid-zone region of a fluidized bed. Particle Image Velocimetry and Digital Image Analysis were used to quantify the parameters that characterize these jets. A grid-zone phenomenological model was developed to compare these parameters with those available in the literature. It was determined from this study that jet penetration length behavior is consistently different for fluidization velocities below and above the minimum fluidization. For velocities above minimum fluidization, jet lengths were found to increase more rapidly with increase in orifice velocity than for operating conditions below minimum fluidization. 相似文献

Multi-stream interactive systems can be seen as “hidden adversary” systems (HAS), where the observable behaviour on any interaction channel is affected by interactions happening on other channels. One way of modelling HAS is in the form of a multi-process I/O automata, where each interacting process appears as a token in a shared state space. Constraints in the state space specify how the dynamics of one process affects other processes. We define the “liveness criterion” of each process as the end objective to be achieved by the process. The problem now for each process is to achieve this objective in the face of unforeseen interferences from other processes. In an earlier paper, it was proposed that this uncertainty can be mitigated by collaboration among the disparate processes. Two types of collaboration philosophies were also suggested: altruistic collaboration and pragmatic collaboration. Plates with V-through edge notches subjected to pure bending and specimens with rectangular edge-through-notches subjected to combined bending and axial pull were investigated (under live-load and stress-frozen conditions) in a completely nondestructive manner using scattered-light photoelasticity. Stress-intensity factors (SIFs) were evaluated by analysing the singular stress distributions near crack-tips. Improved methods are suggested for the evaluation of SIFs. This study examined whether the distribution of tobacco use and related psychosocial risk factors among youth in urban India vary by socioeconomic status (SES). Data were derived from a cross-sectional survey of students enrolled in the 6th and 8th grades in 32 schools in Delhi and Chennai (N = 11,642). The survey was conducted in 2004, before the implementation of a program designed to prevent and reduce tobacco use (MYTRI). Mixed-effect regression models were used (a) to determine the prevalence of tobacco use among private (higher SES) and government (lower SES) school students, (b) to investigate whether certain psychosocial factors were associated with increased tobacco use, and (c) to determine how these factors varied by school type. Ever-use of multiple forms of tobacco (e.g., gutkha, bidis, and cigarettes) was more prevalent among government school students than private school students. After adjusting for city, gender, grade, and age, we found the prevalence rate for ever-use of any tobacco product to be 18.9% for government school students, compared with 12.2% for private school students (p<.01). Students in government schools scored lower than private school students on most psychosocial risk factors for tobacco use studied here, indicating higher risk. Government school students scored the lowest for refusal skills, self-efficacy, and reasons not to use tobacco. Social susceptibility to chewing tobacco and social susceptibility to smoking were strong correlates of current tobacco use among government school students. Exposure to tobacco advertising was also a strong correlate of current tobacco use for government school students but not private school students. In two large cities of India, students attending government schools are using many forms of tobacco at higher rates than private school students. The psychosocial risk profile of government school students suggests they are more vulnerable to initiation and use and to outside influences that encourage use. 相似文献

Abstract Oxide ferroelectric thin films for frequency-tunable microwave devices, in which the dielectric constant of the non-linear dielectric is varied by application of electric fields, have been deposited using PLD. We have fabricated single phase epitaxial Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 and KTaO3 thin film capacitors for applications at 300K and 77K, respectively. Single phase KTaO3 films were obtained only with excess potassium source in the target along with KTaO3 perovskite phase. The films have been characterized for structure and morphology by X-ray diffraction and AFM. The dielectric properties were measured in the low frequency range from 100 kHz to 10 MHz, using interdigitated capacitors. Low loss tangents (0.002 at 300K) were observed for highly oriented Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 films. The importance of low losses for various devices is discussed and the dielectric constants, loss tangents and tunability of these films are reported in this paper. 相似文献

Even though several EMS (Electronic manufacturing services) companies are currently producing “lead free” products, a general
notion of apprehension still exists in the industry, primarily due to the lack of sufficient mechanical reliability data supporting
the use of lead free alloys. The current study was an effort to generate an understanding of the mechanisms of creep deformation
in monolithic and composite (Ag and Cu reinforced) Sn–3.5Ag and Sn–3.0Ag–0.5Cu lead free alloys in the high stress high temperature
regime. Small volume solder samples were reflowed using a custom built computer controlled resistance furnace. Impression
creep testing was employed to determine the activation energy and stress exponent. A careful analysis of the collected data
revealed the underlying creep mechanisms and the following conclusions could be made. Both Sn–3.5Ag and Sn–3.0Ag–0.5Cu exhibited
higher creep resistance as compared to the eutectic tin–lead solder under all tested conditions, with the ternary lead free
alloy marginally outperforming the binary lead free alloy. Composite solders performed better as compared to monolithic solders.
Furthermore, Cu reinforced solders demonstrated higher creep resistance as compared to Ag reinforced solders. 相似文献
