Acute leukemias, the most common cancers in children, are characterized by excessive proliferation of malignant progenitor cells. As a consequence of impaired blood cell production, leukemia patients are susceptible to infectious complications—a major cause of non-relapse mortality. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are involved in various pathologies, from autoimmunity to cancer. Although aberrant NETs formation may be partially responsible for immune defects observed in acute leukemia, still little is known on the NET release in the course of leukemia. Here, we present the first comprehensive evaluation of NETs formation by neutrophils isolated from children with acute leukemia in different stages of the disease and treatment stimulated in vitro with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA), N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP), and calcium ionophore (CI). NETs release was measured using quantitative fluorescent method and visualized microscopically. In this setting, NETs release was significantly impaired in leukemic children both at the diagnosis and during the treatment, and full restoration of neutrophil function was achieved only after successful completion of the leukemia treatment. We suggest that neutrophil function impairment may result from both disease- and treatment-related factors. In this context, deficient innate immune response observed in acute leukemia patients may be present regardless of neutrophil count and contribute to secondary immunodeficiency observed in this population. 相似文献

A study using three different pairs of electrochromic polymers (ECPs) synthesized onto plaques by means of a modified vapor phase polymerization (VPP) technique is presented. Restriction of the respective polymerization times, allowed both faster and slower polymerizing monomers to be controlled, and produced blended plaques with visually diffuse interfaces. The ECPs within the blended plaques retain their individual electrochromic behavior and when encapsulated into an electrochromic device, show outstanding optical switching performance with little degradation evident over 10,000 cycles, coupled with a switching time of the order of 1 second. Blends also allow multiple diffuse color changes within an electrochromic device, due to the difference in oxidation potentials of the individual ECPs, making them candidates for adaptive camouflage use. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper describes an autoselection method for the pedal load of an electric cart, and the control system. The method checks the driver’s physical condition just before the start of driving, calculates the driver’s rating of perceived exertion, and uses that to automatically select a suitable pedal load. To ensure that the level of physical exertion is safe, the largest pedal load is determined on the basis of Borg’s CR10, the Karvonen formula, a pedaling experiment, and statistical data. A driver’s degree of fatigue is estimated from his heart rate, and a pedal load (between the largest and almost zero) is automatically selected. In addition, a dynamic output-feedback cart control system was designed that guarantees the stability of the cart system for any allowable pedal load. A stability condition is derived by employing the concept of dynamic parallel distributed compensation. Finally, experiments demonstrate the validity of the method. 相似文献

Five different pasta formulations were prepared using different concentrations of carrot leaf meal (CLM) and oregano leaf meal (OLM). One control formulation (wheat flour and semolina, 70:30 w/w) and four other formulations were prepared using the following amounts of leaf meals: 5% CLM and 5% OLM (I), 10% CLM (II), 10% OLM (III), and 10% CLM, 10% OLM (IV). The highest content of alpha-linolenic acid was found in formulations II and IV, which also had a reduced n-6/n-3 ratio, 3.6 (IV), when compared to the control, which was 19.8. All the samples enhanced with leaf meals showed antioxidant activity by the DPPH radical method; however, it was higher in formulation IV, which was the same observed for phenolic compounds. Pasta added with leaf meals lost more solubles, had shorter cooking time and a lower weight increase than the control pasta. All formulations had significant sensory acceptance. 相似文献

Fruits have been the focus of several studies aimed at finding new antioxidant sources for protection against the damage caused by reactive species. In this study, the antioxidant activity and the presence of phenolic compounds in all parts (peel, pulp, and seeds) of Eugenia involucrata DC. fruits were evaluated. DPPH·, ABTS·+, and ORAC methods were used to determine the antioxidant activity, and an UHPLC-MS/MS method was developed for determining the phenolic compounds (gallic, chlorogenic, ferulic, p-coumaric and ellagic acids, quercetin, and myricetin). In the determination of both antioxidant activity and phenolic composition, the efficiency of solvents with different polarities—methanol/H2O (80:20, v/v), ethanol/H2O (80:20, v/v), methanol/acidified water with phosphoric acid pH 3.00 (80:20, v/v), and ethyl acetate—for the extraction of the phenolic compounds, was also evaluated. All parts of E. involucrata fruits showed antioxidant activity, in the range of 36.68 ± 1.44 to 873.87 ± 18.24 μmol TE g?1, being the highest values found in the seeds and peel when more polar extraction solvents were used. Six, five, and three phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in the pulp, peel, and seeds, respectively, with the highest abundance as p-coumaric acid (14 ± 2 mg kg?1) in the pulp, quercetin (47 ± 5 mg kg?1) in the peel, and gallic acid (74 ± 4 mg kg?1) in the seeds, also when more polar solvents were used. Although antioxidant activity methods suggested that the peel and seeds have more antioxidant potential, a wider variety of compounds were determined in the pulp. 相似文献

Iris recognition is tested to be one of the most reliable approaches for automatic personal recognition under the infrared light. However, it is challenging and difficult to acquire good quality iris patterns of dark color eyes in the visible wavelengths. Sclera recognition can achieve good recognition accuracy in the visible spectrum, but the performance will drop when the sclera pattern is saturated. In this paper, we proposed a comprehensive multimodal eye recognition system that uses both iris and sclera patterns for recognition from the same eye image. The experimental results show that the proposed multimodal frontal eye recognition method can achieve better recognition accuracy than unimodal iris or sclera recognition. In addition, we propose a multimodal multi-angle eye recognition system that can further improve the recognition accuracy. 相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels were prepared in the presence/absence of Laponite RD (LRD) by using glutaraldehyde (GL) as chemical crosslinker. The effect of GL concentration (CHO/OH ratio between 0.02 and 0.38) and of clay addition on the PVA hydrogel properties was investigated. The swollen hydrogels showed good transparency and flexibility. LRD incorporation into the PVA hydrogel, revealed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, led to a significant increase of the roughness of the dried hydrogel surface (about two times), as established by atomic force microscopy. The swelling ability was affected in a small extent by the clay addition. The elastic modulus decreased from 4680 to 3340 Pa and from 2195 to 1603 Pa by addition of 0.5% LRD into PVA hydrogels obtained with CHO/OH ratio of 0.02 and 0.06, respectively. The LRD addition reduced the gelation time determined by in situ rheological monitoring of PVA crosslinking reaction. The experimental investigations showed that there is an optimum CHO/OH ratio of 0.02 for which the PVA/LRD hybrid hydrogel presents the properties required by a targeted application, as for example support material for wound dressings. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The seeds of four prairie fruits—chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), thorny buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea), Woods’ rose (Rosa woodsii) and hawthorn (Crataegus × mordenensis)—from Southern Alberta were investigated. The lipid contents of the seeds were found to be 10.4, 11.5, 3.7 and 3.4%, respectively.
The tested seed lipids contained mainly linoleic acid in the range from 27.9 to 65.6% and oleic acid from 19.7 to 61.9%. The
thorny buffaloberry and Woods’ rose seed lipids contained 29.2 and 30.8% of linolenic acid, respectively. The contents of
palmitic and stearic acids ranged from 3.2 to 5.4% and 1.6 to 2.2%, respectively. The contents of total tocopherols in the
chokecherry, thorny buffaloberry, Woods’ rose and hawthorn seed lipids accounted for 595, 897, 2,358 and 2,837 mg/kg, respectively.
The main sterols in the lipids were β-sitosterol, Δ5-avenasterol, cycloartenol, campesterol, stigmasterol and gramisterol. The results of the present study show that the lipids
from the seeds of the investigated prairie fruits could be a good source of valuable essential fatty acids, tocopherols and
sterols, thus suggesting their application as functional foods and nutraceuticals. 相似文献
