A low noise and high linearity down‐conversion CMOS mixer for 2.4‐GHz wireless receiver is presented in this paper. Using a sub‐harmonic balun with a simple but effective B‐type amplifier, the local oscillator frequency required for this mixer has been reduced by half, and the input local oscillator signal could be single‐ended rather than differential, which simultaneously simplifies the design of local oscillator. A distortion and noise cancelation transconductor in association with current bleeding technique is employed to improve the noise and linearity of the entire mixer under a reduced bias current without compromising the voltage gain. Fabricated in a 0.18‐µm RF CMOS technology of Global Foundries, the mixer demonstrates a voltage gain of 15.8 dB and input‐referred third‐order intercept point of 6.6 dBm with a noise figure of 2.6 dB. It consumes 7.65 mA from a 1.0‐V supply and occupies a compact area of 0.75 × 0.71 mm2 including all test pads. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A class AB version of the conventional super source follower (SSF) is described. The circuit greatly increases slew rate (SR) and current efficiency, maintaining the low distortion and low output resistance of the SSF. Class AB operation is achieved without extra power dissipation or supply requirements, and without bandwidth or noise degradation. The circuit can advantageously replace the SSF in a wide variety of analog systems, opening a new research line in analog design. To illustrate the widespread application of this cell, a class AB differential unity‐gain buffer, a class AB differential current mirror and two class AB differential transconductors are designed, fabricated in a 0.5µm CMOS technology and tested. Measurement results using a dual supply of ±1.65V show that the proposed class AB version of the SSF improves SR by a factor 21.5 and increases bandwidth by 10%, keeping noise level, input range, power consumption, and supply requirements unaltered. The fabricated class AB current mirror features a THD at 100 kHz of ? 62dB for signal currents 20 times larger than the bias current. The fabricated transconductors feature an IM3 at 1 MHz of ? 56.6dB for output currents more than 13 times larger than the bias currents. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A design procedure for high‐order continuous‐time intermediate‐frequency band‐pass filters based on the cascade of low‐Q biquadratic cells is presented. The approach is well suited for integrated‐circuit fabrication, as it takes into account the maximum capacitance spread dictated by the available technology and maximum acceptable sensitivity to component variations. A trade‐off between noise and maximum linear range is also met. A novel, wide‐tuning‐range transconductor topology is also described. Based on these results, a 10‐pole band‐pass filter for a code division multiple‐access satellite receiver has been designed and tested. The filter provides tunable center frequency (f0) from 10 to 70 MHz and exhibits a 28‐MHz bandwidth around f0 = 70 MHz with more than 39‐dB attenuation at f0/2 and 2f0. Third‐order harmonic rejection is higher than 60 dB for a 1‐Vpp 70‐MHz input, and equivalent output noise is lower than 1 mVrms. The circuit is fabricated in a 0.25‐µm complementary metal oxide semiconductor process, and the core consumes 12 mA from a 2.5‐V supply, offering the best current/pole ratio figure. The die area resulted to be 0.9 × 1.1 mm2. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Current‐oriented operational amplifier (OpAmp) design has been common for its orderly current‐to‐speed tradeoff. However, for high‐precision or high‐linearity applications, increasing the current does not help much, as the supply voltage (VDD) and intrinsic gain of the MOSFETs in ultra‐scaled CMOS technologies are very limited. This paper introduces voltage‐oriented circuit techniques to address such limitations. Specifically, a 2xVDD‐enabled recycling folded cascade (RFC) OpAmp is proposed. It features: (1) current recycling to enhance the effective trans conductance by 4x with no extra power; (2) transistor stacking to boost the output resistance by one to two orders of magnitude; and (3) VDD elevating to enlarge the linear output swing by 4x. Comparing with its 1xVDD RFC and FC counterparts, the proposed solution achieves 20‐dB higher DC gain (i.e. 72.8 dB) in open loop and 20‐dB lower IM3 (i.e., –76.5 dB) in closed loop, under the same power budget of 0.6 mW in a 1‐V General Purpose 65‐nm CMOS process. In many applications, these joint improvements in a single stage are already adequate, being more power efficient (i.e. less current paths), stable (i.e. more phase margin), and compact (i.e. no frequency compensation) than multi‐stage OpAmps. Voltage‐conscious biasing and node‐voltage trajectory check ensure the device reliability in both transient and steady states. No specialized high‐voltage device is necessary. A new solution for an ultra low voltage bulk‐driven programmable gain amplifier (PGA) is described in the paper. While implemented in a standard n‐well 0.18‐µm complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) process, the circuit operates from 0.3 V supply, and its voltage gain can be regulated from 0 to 18 dB with 6‐dB steps. At minimum gain, the PGA offers nearly rail‐to‐rail input/output swing and the input referred thermal noise of 2.37 μV/Hz1/2, which results in a 63‐dB dynamic range (DR). Besides, the total power consumption is 96 nW, the signal bandwidth is 2.95 kHz at 5‐pF load capacitance and the third‐order input intercept point (IIP3) is 1.62 V. The circuit performance was simulated with LTspice. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

High‐order log‐domain filters could be designed by transposing the already known linear‐domain GmC filter topologies to the corresponding topologies in the log‐domain. This is achieved by using a non‐linear transconductor configuration, where the output current is exponentially related to its input and output voltages. A drawback of the non‐linear transconductor configuration already introduced in the literature is that a number of the transposed log‐domain filter topologies suffer from DC instability, while in some others a DC offset current appears at their output. In order to eliminate the aforementioned problems a modified non‐linear transconductor configuration for transposing GmC filter topologies to log‐domain filter topologies is introduced in this paper. The achieved improvements are demonstrated through a number of log‐domain filter configurations derived using the already introduced and the proposed transposition schemes. In this paper, a low-power low-noise complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) receiver RF front-end (RFFE) that employs a current-reuse Q-boosted resistive feedback low-noise amplifier (RFLNA) is proposed for 401 to 406 MHz medical device radio-communication service band IoT applications. By employing a series RLC input matching network, the proposed RFLNA has the advantages of both the conventional RFLNA and the inductively degenerated common-source LNA without using large on-chip spiral inductors at the sources of the main transistors. The proposed active mixer utilizes a current-reuse transconductor, in which a p-channel metal-oxide semiconductor (PMOS) transistor performs a current-bleeding function to reduce direct current (DC) and flicker noise in the switching stage of the active mixer. The proposed receiver RFFE is implemented in a 65-nm CMOS process and achieves a voltage gain of 30.9 dB, noise figure of 4.1 dB, S11 of less than −10 dB, and IIP3 of −22.9 dBm. It operates at a supply voltage of 1 V with bias currents of 360 μA. The active die area is 0.4 mm × 0.35 mm.  相似文献

In this paper, a feedforward linearization method for programmable CMOS operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) is described. The proposed circuit technique is developed using simple source‐coupled differential pair transconductors, a feedback‐loop amplifier for self‐adjusting transcoductance (gm) and a linear reference resistor (R). As a result, an efficient linearization of a transfer characteristic of the OTA is obtained. SPICE simulations show that for 0.35µm AMS CMOS process with a single +3V power supply, total harmonic distortion at 1 Vpp and temperature range from ?30 to +90°C is less than ?49.3 dB in comparison with ?35.8 dB without linearization. Moreover, the input voltage range of linear operation is increased. Power consumption of the linearized OTA circuit is 0.86 mW. Finally, the OTA is used to design a third‐order elliptic low‐pass filter in high‐frequency range. The cut‐off frequency of the operational transconductance amplifier‐capacitor (OTA‐C) filter is tunable in the range of 322.6 kHz–10 MHz using the feedforward linearized OTAs with the digitally programmable current mirrors. In this paper the response of a bulk‐driven MOS Metal‐Oxide‐Semiconductor input stage over the input common‐mode voltage range is discussed and experimentally evaluated. In particular, the behavior of the effective input transconductance and the input current is studied for different gate bias voltages of the input transistors. A comparison between simulated and measured results, in standard 0.35‐µm CMOS Complementary Metal‐Oxide‐Semiconductor technology, demonstrates that the model of the MOS transistors is not sufficiently accurate for devices operating under forward bias conditions of their source‐bulk pn junction. Therefore, the fabrication and the experimental evaluation of any solution based on this approach are highly recommended. A technique to automatically control the gate bias voltage of a bulk‐driven differential pair is proposed to optimize the design tradeoff between the effective input transconductance and the input current. The proposed input stage was integrated as a standalone block and was also included in a 1.5‐V second‐order operational transconductance amplifier (OTA)‐C lowpass filter. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the approach. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Two highly linear, digitally programmable gain amplifiers are presented and compared in terms of linearity, frequency, area and power consumption. High linearity and wide gain tuning range with moderate area consumption are the main benefits of both configurations. Furthermore, constant bandwidth is achieved by means of switched compensation capacitor arrays. Three‐bit prototypes were integrated in a 0.35 µm–3.3 V CMOS process with 2.5 V supply voltage. Experimental distortion levels are better than ?68 dB for 1 MHz and 1 Vp?p output signals in both configurations; hence, the suitability of the linearization technique based on MOS current dividers is shown. A novel CMOS current‐feedback operational amplifier (CFOA) aimed to low‐power applications is proposed. The use of a compact class AB implementation allows high current‐drive capability and simultaneously very low quiescent power consumption. Measurement results of a fabricated prototype show for an inverting configuration a closed‐loop bandwidth of 1 MHz independent of gain setting, and a slew rate of 2V/µs for a load capacitance of 30 pF and a quiescent power consumption of 264µW. This work proposes a 14 b 150 MS/s CMOS A/D converters (ADC) for software‐defined radio systems requiring simultaneously high‐resolution, low‐power, and small chip area at high speed. The proposed calibration‐free ADC employs a wide‐band low‐noise input sample‐and‐hold amplifier (SHA) along with a four‐stage pipelined architecture optimizing scaling‐down factors for the sampling capacitance and the input trans‐conductance of amplifiers in each stage to minimize thermal noise effect and power consumption. A signal‐insensitive 3‐D fully symmetric layout achieves a 14 b level resolution by reducing a capacitor mismatch of three MDACs. The prototype ADC in a 0.13µm 1P8M CMOS technology demonstrates a measured differential nonlinearity (DNL) and integral nonlinearity within 0.81LSB and 2.83LSB at 14 b, respectively. The ADC shows a maximum signal‐to‐noise‐and‐distortion ratio of 64 and 61 dB and a maximum spurious‐free dynamic range of 71 and 70 dB at 120 and 150 MS/s, respectively. The ADC with an active die area of 2.0mm2 consumes 140 mW at 150 MS/s and 1.2 V. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A new energy‐efficient tunable pulse generator is presented in this paper using 0.13‐µm CMOS technology for short‐range high‐data‐rate 3.1–10.6 GHz ultra‐wideband applications. A ring oscillator consisting of current‐starved CMOS inverters is quickly switched on and off for the duration of the pulse, and the amplitude envelope is shaped with a variable passive CMOS attenuator. The variable passive attenuator is controlled using an impulse that is created by a low‐power glitch generator (CMOS NOR gate). The glitch generator combines the falling edge of the clock and its delayed inverse, allowing the duration of the impulse to be changed over a wide range (500–900 ps) by varying the delay between the edges. The pulses generated with this technique can provide a sharp frequency roll off with high out‐of‐band rejection to help meet the Federal Communications Commission mask. The entire circuit operates in switched mode with a low average power consumption of less than 3.8 mW at 910 MHz pulse repetition frequency or below 4.2 pJ of energy per pulse. It occupies a total area of 725 × 600 µm2 including bonding pads and decoupling capacitors, and the active circuit area is only 360 × 200 µm2. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

One of the most challenging subsystems for integrated radio frequency (RF) complementary metal‐oxide semiconductor (CMOS) solutions is the power amplifier. A 1–6 GHz RF power driver (RFPD) in 90 nm CMOS technology is presented, which receives signals from on‐chip RF signal chain components at ?12 dBm power levels and produces a 0 dBm signal to on‐chip or off‐chip 50 Ω loads. A unique unit cell design is developed for the RFPD to offset issues associated with very wide multi‐fingered transistors. The RF driver was fabricated as a stand‐alone sub‐circuit on a 90 nm CMOS die with other sub‐circuits. Experimental tests confirmed that the on‐chip RFPD operates up to 6 GHz and is able to drive 50 Ω loads to the desired 0 dBm power level. Spur free dynamic range exceeded 70 dB. The measured power gain was 11.6 dB at 3 GHz. The measured 1 dB compression point and input third‐order intercept point (IIP3) were ?4.7 dBm and ?0.5 dBm, respectively. Also, included are modeling, simulation, and measured results addressing issues associated with interfacing the die to a package with pinouts and the package to a printed circuit test fixture. The simulations were made through direct current (DC), alternating current (AC), and transient analysis with Cadence Analog Design Environment. The stability was also verified on the basis of phase margin simulations from extracted circuit net‐lists. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, a 40 M–1000 MHz 77.2‐dB spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) CMOS RF variable gain amplifier (VGA) has been presented for digital TV tuner applications. The proposed RFVGA adopts a wideband operational‐amplifier‐based VGA and a wideband buffer with differential multiple gated transistor linearization method for wideband operation and high linearity. The SFDR of the proposed RFVGA is also analyzed in detail. Fabricated in a 0.13‐µm CMOS process, the RFVGA provides 31‐dB gain range with 1‐dB gain step, a minimum noise figure of 7.5 dB at a maximum gain of 27 dB, and maximum in‐band output‐referred third‐order intercept point of 27.7 dBm, while drawing an average current of 27.8 mA with a supply voltage of 3.3 V. A linear, Ultra Wideband, low‐power VCO, suitable for UWB‐FM applications is proposed, forming the main part of a UWB‐FM transmitter. The VCO is designed in TSMC 90thinspacenm digital CMOS process and includes a Source‐Coupled Multivibrator, used as current‐controlled oscillator (CCO) which generates output frequencies between 2.1 and 5 GHz and a voltage‐to‐current (V‐to‐I) converter which translates the VCO input voltage modulation signal to current. Two single‐ended inverter buffers are employed to drive either a differential or a single‐ended UWB antenna. The presented VCO is designed for 1 V power supply and exhibits a linear tuning range of 2.1–5 GHz, a differential output power of ?7.83 dBm±0.78 dB and low power consumption of 8.26 mW, including the output buffers, at the maximum oscillation frequency. It is optimized for a very high ratio of tuning range (81.69%) over power consumption equal to 9.95 dB. The desired frequency band of 3.1–5 GHz for UWB‐FM applications is covered for the entire industrial temperature range (?40 to 125°C). Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A low‐power CMOS receiver baseband analog (BBA) circuit based on alternating filter and gain stage is reported. For the given specifications of the BBA block, optimum allocation of the gain, input‐referred third‐order intercept point (IIP3), and noise figure (NF) of each block is performed to minimize current consumption. The fully integrated receiver BBA chain is fabricated in 0.18µm CMOS technology and IIP3 of 30 dBm with a maximum gain of 59 dB and NF of 31 dB are obtained at 3.6 mW power consumption. Active‐RC biquad is proposed, which allows the DC level of the input of operational amplifier (op‐amp) to be different from that of the op‐amp output, enabling the low‐voltage operation. The proposed biquad realizes a second‐order transfer function with only one op‐amp, rendering even lower power consumption. By cascading two biquads, a 0.6 V fourth‐order filter is realized in a 0.13µm CMOS technology. While dissipating only 0.42 mW, the filter shows 2.11 MHz cut‐off frequency and 62 dB spurious‐free dynamic range. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The leap‐frog (LF) configuration is an important structure in analogue filter design. Voltage‐mode LF OTA‐C filters have recently been studied in the literature; however, general explicit formulas do not exist for current‐mode LF OTA‐C filters and there is also need for current‐mode LF‐based OTA‐C structures for realization of arbitrary transmission zeros. Three current‐mode OTA‐C structures are presented, including the basic LF structure and LF filters with an input distributor or an output summer. They can realize all‐pole characteristics and functions with arbitrary transmission zeros. Explicit design formulas are derived directly from these structures for the synthesis of, respectively, all‐pole and arbitrary zero filter characteristics of up to the sixth order. The filter structures are regular and the design formulas are straightforward to use. As an illustrative example, a 300 MHz seventh‐order linear phase low‐pass filter with zeros is presented. The filter is implemented using a fully differential linear operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) based on a source degeneration topology. Simulations in a standard TSMC 0.18µm CMOS process with 2.5 V power supply have shown that the cutoff frequency of the filter ranges from 260 to 320 MHz, group delay ripple is about 4.5% over the whole tuning range, noise of the filter is 420nA/√Hz, dynamic range is 66 dB and power consumption is 200 mW. In this paper, CMOS‐based low‐noise amplifiers with JFET‐CMOS technology for high‐resolution sensor interface circuits are presented. A differential difference amplifier (DDA) configuration is employed to realize differential signal amplification with very high input impedance, which is required for the front‐end circuit in many sensor applications. Low‐noise JFET devices are used as input pair of the input differential stages or source‐grounded output load devices, which are dominant in the total noise floor of DDA circuits. A fully differential amplifier circuit with pure CMOS DDA and three types of JFET‐CMOS DDAs were fabricated and their noise performances were compared. The results show that the total noise floor of the JFET‐CMOS amplifier was much lower compared to that of the pure CMOS configuration. The noise‐reduction effect of JFET replacement depends on the circuit configuration. The noise reduction effect by JFET device was maximum of about − 18 dB at 2.5 Hz. JFET‐CMOS technology is very effective in improving the signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) of a sensor interface circuit with CMOS‐based sensing systems. © 2008 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
