A systematic study of waveguides fabricated by K+-Na + exchange in soda-lime silicate and BK7 glasses is presented. The measured K+ concentration profile, the refractive index profile, and the diffusion profile obtained by solving the one-dimensional diffusion equation are correlated to explain the differences in the index profiles in the two glasses. The mobility of the potassium ions was measured by fabricating waveguides using electromigration. Surface waveguides formed by diffusion from a molten KNO3 salt bath were buried by applying an electric field. Single-mode channel waveguides for operation at a wavelength of 1.3 μm that exhibit excellent mode matching with conventional optical fibers, achieving a fiber-waveguide insertion loss of less than 1 dB for a 20-mm-long waveguide, have been obtained  相似文献

铜离子交换单步掩埋BK7玻璃波导的制备与表征   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1  
利用Cu离子交换技术制备了BK7玻璃平面光波导,在6328nm波长下,用棱镜耦合技术测量出所制备波导的有效折射率,利用反WKB方法计算并确定了平面光波导的折射率分布,通过对折射率分布进行函数拟合,发现离子交换后的样品折射率分布近似符合改进后的高斯分布,样品的折射率分布似乎是一个掩埋波导的折射率分布,求出所制备玻璃平面光波导在570℃的扩散系数De≈12133×10-14m2s。同时,对所制备波导进行了电子显微镜(EMS)和次级离子质谱(SIMS)测试,得到了铜离子在玻璃表面的浓度分布,从而证明了实验所得到的BK7玻璃平面光波导是掩埋波导。这种掩埋平面波导是由单步Cu离子交换技术得到的。  相似文献

The realisation of optical buried waveguides fabricated from porous silicon layers is presented. The refractive index of porous silicon layer varies according to its porosity and its oxidisation process conditions. So either step or graded index waveguides are achieved. These waveguides are formed by a localised anodisation of heavily doped p-type silicon wafers. Measurements at a wavelength of 1.3 μm yield waveguide losses below 4 dB/cm. The waveguides are also characterised by the near-field-guided mode profile at 1.3 μm. This study deals with the modulation of the waveguiding-layer refractive index and the losses on waveguides fabricated from p+.  相似文献

Proton-exchanged Z-cut LiNbO3 planar waveguides formed using phosphoric acid were characterized optically. The refractive index profile and the diffusion parameters were studied systematically. These waveguides have propagation losses of less than 1 dB/cm and exhibit properties that are different from those obtained using benzoic acid. The index profile is not a simple step function and can be modeled accurately by a polynomial expression. A maximum surface index increase of 0.145 was measured at a 0.633-μm wavelength. The diffusion constant D0 and the activation energy Q for the proton-exchange process using this acid were found to be 6.43×108 μm2/h and 82.91 kJ/mol, respectively. The annealing properties of these waveguides were also established, and the effects of annealing on surface index change and waveguide depth increase were found to follow a power-law relationship  相似文献

This paper reports on the fabrication and characterization of hybrid organic-inorganic glass sol-gel slab and channel waveguides by ultraviolet light imprinting in thin films deposited by a one-step dip-coating process. The adjustment of chemical composition of the materials provides precise selection of refractive index from 1.48 to 1.52 at the wavelength of 632.8 mn. The refractive index of the waveguides at 1.55 μm is similar to that of optical fiber, thus reducing the reflection loss between the two to less than 0.01 dB. The effect of ultraviolet light exposure and heat treatment on waveguide refractive index is studied. Fabrication parameters to produce ridge waveguides are optimized to achieve very smooth side walls. Propagation losses in these waveguides are ~0.1 dB/cm. Proton-exchanged planar waveguides were demonstrated in Z-cut LiNBO/sub 3/ using toluic acid as a new organic proton source. These waveguides exhibit a propagation loss of around 1 dB/cm, and a step refractive index profile with an index increase of 0.124 measured at 0.663 mu m. The diffusion rate was found to be lower than those obtained using the popular benzoic and phosphoric acids.<>  相似文献

The refractive index profiles are investigated for Ag+-Na+ ion-exchanged waveguides in soda-lime glass. The waveguides with the highest index change, used to design homogeneous refracting waveguide lenses and prisms, are fabricated at 350°C using concentrated melt with composition of 10 mol.% AgNO3 and 90 mol.% NaNO3. The profiles of two- and three-mode waveguides are reconstructed from the measured mode refractive indexes. The linear correlation between the index change and the silver concentration in glass is experimentally confirmed. The concentration profiles are numerically simulated on the base of diffusion-exchange theory. It is established that the values of the maximum in index profile near the glass surface tend to a saturation value after a long exchange time  相似文献

Ion implanted KNbO3 channel waveguides were annealed at 150°C for several hours. The waveguide losses were considerably reduced at visible and near-infrared wavelengths showing a minimum loss coefficient of 1.7 dB cm-1 at 633 nm. We report a new method for producing graded index polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) waveguides using optical densification by angled X-ray exposure. The resulting larger refractive index near the surface of the waveguide serves to better isolate the guided light from potentially absorbing or scattering substrates than in waveguides of constant refractive index. We calculate that a 65° angle exposure in 6-μm-thick planar PMMA waveguide shifts the peak of the fundamental mode profile ~0.5 μm away from the substrate. Consistent with this result, we measure a reduction in the propagation loss of PMMA planar waveguides on a Ni substrate from 1.5 dB/cm to 0.5 dB/cm after angle X-ray exposure  相似文献

A new method is presented for reconstructing smooth refractive index profiles of optical waveguides from measured effective indexes. It is based on the semivectorial finite difference method to solve the polarized wave equation for a given refractive index profile. An iterative simplex algorithm is used to find the best refractive index parameters that give, as a solution, effective indexes close to the measured ones. The method is applied successfully to Ag+-Na + ion-exchanged glass slab waveguides and to diffused Mg/Ti:LiNbO3 slab waveguides. Dopant concentration profiles are obtained by using secondary ion mass spectrometry. The relationship between the refractive index change and the dopant concentration is determined for both cases. The iterative simplex algorithm-finite difference method (ISA-FDM) is compared to other index profile reconstruction methods, and the advantages with respect to WKB-based methods are pointed out  相似文献

The authors report a 15-dB amplification and a pump efficiency almost 30 times larger than that reported previously at 1.06 μm in ion-exchanged waveguides. The potassium-sodium exchanged channel guides used were fabricated by thermal diffusion in a 2% Nd3+-doped silicate glass. The Ag+-Na+ ion-exchange process in a soda-lime silicate glass was studied at 330° as a function of composition of AgNO3-NaNO3 melt, mixing condition, and exchange time. The concentration profile of silver in glass was measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy and SEM technique. The surface index change and the index profile were determined from mode index measurement. Ion-exchange was modeled by an ion-diffusion limited process in the glass with an equilibrium chemical reaction at the melt-glass interface. A large value of 75 for the equilibrium constant at low-silver melt concentrations (<10-2 mole fractions) shows that uptake of silver in glass varies in highly nonlinear fashion with the melt concentration. The results provide boundary conditions necessary for solution of the diffusion equation and design of single-mode waveguides  相似文献

A thorough and detailed characterization of annealed proton-exchanged (APE) waveguides in Z-cut LiNbO3 is described. The mode index measurements in planar waveguides as a function of wavelength and annealing time are reported, including useful analytical relations for the refractive index change, its dispersion, and the depth profile as a function of annealing parameters. Analytical expressions for the mode propagation characteristics are presented and experimentally verified with reasonable accuracy. It is shown that the planar waveguide characterization results can be used to model the channel waveguide characteristics accurately. The model provides closed-form expressions for the mode index and the mode field profile, and the theoretical results are in excellent agreement with the measured data. The technique is used to accurately predict the phase mismatch between the fundamental and second harmonic modes in frequency-doubling experiments using APE channel waveguides. An optimum waveguide geometry for which the phase mismatch is relatively insensitive to the waveguide nonuniformity was predicted and verified experimentally  相似文献

A simple nondestructive method for determination of refractive index profile of single-mode waveguides using the measured effective refractive indexes is proposed. The method is based on the extraction of the additional data about the waveguide profile from the investigation of its evolution with the duration of fabrication process. The profile reconstructions are carried out using an appropriate algorithm in the frames of the WKB approximation. The method is applied for few- and single-mode waveguides, obtained by K+-Na+ field assisted ion exchange. The results are corroborated with the reconstruction from the effective refractive indexes measured at a shorter wavelength, as well as with profile study by means of step-by-step etching  相似文献

Proton-exchanged optical waveguides have been fabricated in z-cut LiNbO/sub 3/ using a new proton source: stearic acid. These waveguides were characterized optically and were found to exhibit a step index profile with Delta n=0.118 measured at 0.633 mu m.
