Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. Across the globe, people in the age group older than 50 are at a higher risk of CRC. Genetic and environmental risk factors play a significant role in the development of CRC. If detected early, CRC is preventable and treatable. Currently, available screening methods and therapies for CRC treatment reduce the incidence rate among the population, but the micrometastasis of cancer may lead to recurrence. Therefore, the challenge is to develop an alternative therapy to overcome this complication. Nanotechnology plays a vital role in cancer treatment and offers targeted chemotherapies directly and selectively to cancer cells, with enhanced therapeutic efficacy. Additionally, nanotechnology elevates the chances of patient survival in comparison to traditional chemotherapies. The potential of nanoparticles includes that they may be used simultaneously for diagnosis and treatment. These exciting properties of nanoparticles have enticed researchers worldwide to unveil their use in early CRC detection and as effective treatment. This review discusses contemporary methods of CRC screening and therapies for CRC treatment, while the primary focus is on the theranostic approach of nanotechnology in CRC treatment and its prospects. In addition, this review aims to provide knowledge on the advancement of nanotechnology in CRC and as a starting point for researchers to think about new therapeutic approaches using nanotechnology.  相似文献

BackgroundDentists may choose to integrate intraoral scanners (IOSs) into their practices, but there are many different IOS technologies and system generations to choose from, posing a challenge for dentists who want to invest in them.MethodsA survey of IOS use rates, advantages, satisfaction, and training was developed and deployed through Qualtrics to the 968 members of the American Dental Association Clinical Evaluators (ACE) Panel on February 19, 2021. Nonrespondents were sent reminders, and data were analyzed in SAS Version 9.4 (SAS).ResultsA total of 369 panelists responded to the survey. IOS use was split among the ACE Panel; 53% indicated they use one in their practice. The top reason respondents began using IOSs was to improve clinical efficiency (70%). Ninety percent of respondents use IOSs for single tooth-supported crowns, and 58% began using IOSs less than 4 years ago. Most users are at least mostly satisfied (91%) with the results. Among nonusers, the top reason for not using an IOS was the high level of financial investment (66%); 34% and 40% of nonusers are thinking of buying or training with IOSs in 2021, respectively.ConclusionsUptake of IOSs is split; most users are satisfied with their results, and nonusers cited financial barriers as the most common reason for not investing in one.Practical ImplicationsAs IOSs continue to penetrate the market and dentists are faced with a decision whether to invest in one, they will need guidance on how to choose the most appropriate device for their patients.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to develop a novel breast abnormality detection system by utilizing the potential of infrared breast thermography (IBT) in early breast abnormality detection. Since the temperature distributions are different in normal and abnormal thermograms and hot thermal patches are visible in abnormal thermograms, the abnormal thermograms possess more complex information than the normal thermograms. Here, the proposed method exploits the presence of hot thermal patches and vascular changes by using the power law transformation for pre-processing and singular value decomposition to characterize the thermal patches. The extracted singular values are found to be statistically significant (p?<?0.001) in breast abnormality detection. The discriminability of the singular values is evaluated by using seven different classifiers incorporating tenfold cross-validations, where the thermograms of the Department of Biotechnology-Tripura University-Jadavpur University (DBT-TU-JU) and Database of Mastology Research (DMR) databases are used. In DMR database, the highest classification accuracy of 98.00% with the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.9862 is achieved with the support vector machine using polynomial kernel. The same for the DBT-TU-JU database is 92.50% with AUC of 0.9680 using the same classifier. The comparison of the proposed method with the other reported methods concludes that the proposed method outperforms the other existing methods as well as other traditional feature sets used in IBT based breast abnormality detection. Moreover, by using Rank1 and Rank2 singular values, a breast abnormality grading (BAG) index has also been developed for grading the thermograms based on their degree of abnormality.  相似文献

BackgroundThere are a limited number of studies addressing behavior management techniques and procedural modifications that dentists can use to treat people with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).MethodsThe authors conducted a search of the dental and behavioral analytic literature to identify management techniques that address problem behaviors exhibited by children with ASDs in dental and other health-related environments.ResultsApplied behavior analysis (ABA) is a science in which procedures are based on the principles of behavior through systematic experimentation. Clinicians have used ABA procedures successfully to modify socially significant behaviors of people with ASD. Basic behavior management techniques currently used in dentistry may not encourage people with cognitive and behavioral disabilities, such as ASD, to tolerate simple in-office dental procedures consistently. Instead, dental care providers often are required to use advanced behavior management techniques to complete simple in-office procedures such as prophylaxis, sealant placement and obtaining radiographs. ABA procedures can be integrated in the dental environment to manage problem behaviors often exhibited by children with an ASD.ConclusionsThe authors found no evidence-based procedural modifications that address the behavioral characteristics and problematic behaviors of children with an ASD in a dental environment. Further research in this area should be conducted.Clinical ImplicationsKnowledge and in-depth understanding of behavioral principles is essential when a dentist is concerned with modifying behaviors. Using ABA procedures can help dentists manage problem behaviors effectively and systematically when performing routine dental treatment. Being knowledgeable about each patient’s behavioral characteristics and the parents’ level of involvement is important in the successful integration of the procedures and reduction of in-office time.  相似文献

Removal of miniplates in maxillofacial surgery: a follow-up study.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
PURPOSE: We sought to follow-up a cohort of patients who had miniplates (plates) inserted in the oral and maxillofacial region during a 13-month period over 4 years to study the incidence and factors associated with plate removal. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred fifty-three patients had plates inserted in the oral and maxillofacial region in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, University Hospital Birmingham, UK, between November 1, 1998, and November 30, 1999. All 153 patients' records were revisited on or after October 31, 2002, giving a minimum follow-up of 3 years and a maximum of 4 years. RESULTS: During a period of 13 months (November 1, 1998 through November 30, 1999), 308 plates were inserted into 153 patients. A total of 32 plates were removed from 21 patients by October 31, 2002, (10.4%) over 4 years; 27 plates were removed from 16 patients for purely plate-related symptoms, with infection being the most common cause accounting for 16 plates (50%) in 9 patients. Symptoms necessitating plate removal occurred within 52 weeks after insertion in 16 patients, accounting for 23 of the plates removed (72%). The age of the patient at plate insertion may have some influence on plate removal but this was not significant. Seniority of the operator did not affect plate removal. CONCLUSION: Our experience with the removal of miniplates compares with previously published reports. Longitudinal follow-up at 4 years indicates that plate-related problems leading to removal are likely to occur in the first year after insertion.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Despite the potential significance of early soft tissue healing to long-term outcomes, this aspect of one-stage dental implants has not been investigated. The purpose of this prospective study was to characterize clinical and microbiologic parameters of early soft tissue healing around dental implants placed following a one-stage protocol. METHODS: Twenty-one patients (11 females and 10 males, aged 18 to 78 years; two smokers) needing a single implant were included. Clinical parameters included probing depth, buccal flap thickness, papilla height, and bleeding on probing. Subgingival plaque samples were obtained pre- and postoperatively and analyzed using molecular techniques. RESULTS: The newly formed peri-implant sulcus probing depth remained fairly stable from 4 to 12 weeks (P > 0.05). There was no statistically significant association between flap thickness or papillary height and number of implant bleeding sites at 12 weeks (P > 0.05). Detection of known periodontal pathogens was rare. Fusobacterium nucleatum was present in 17 patients prior to surgery, and 71% of them became carriers of this bacterium at the implant site by the second postoperative week. The number of F. nucleatum-positive subjects around the implant was significantly lower than the number of F. nucleatum-positive subjects around teeth (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Peri-implant soft tissue clinical maturity may be established as early as 4 weeks following implant placement by a one-stage surgical protocol; neither preexisting flap thickness nor papillary height seemed to influence newly forming peri-implant sulcus depth or bleeding on probing prevalence. For the most part, the newly created peri-implant crevices were colonized by specific bacteria within 2 weeks.  相似文献

Protein misfolding is an intrinsic aspect of normal folding within the complex cellular environment. Its effects are minimized in living system by the action of a range of protective mechanisms including molecular chaperones and quality control systems. According to the current growing research, protein misfolding is a recognized key feature of most neurodegenerative diseases. Extensive biochemical, neuropathological, and genetic evidence suggest that the cerebral accumulation of amyloid fibrils is the central event in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders. In the first part of this review we have discussed the general course of action of folding and misfolding of the proteins. Later part of this review gives an outline regarding the role of protein misfolding in the molecular and cellular mechanisms in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's and Parkinson along with their treatment possibilities. Finally, we have mentioned about the recent findings in neurodegenerative diseases.  相似文献

Indigenous groups throughout the world have experienced social exclusion and have been subjected to marginalization. Globalization has resulted in significant changes in traditional lifestyles and developmental programs have not been successful in integrating Indigenous people into communities with non-Indigenous people. Although there is substantial research on acculturation and adaptation within the field of cross-cultural psychology, there are few narrative reviews of this literature. The present paper provides such a review and examines the mental health concerns of Indigenous groups undergoing acculturation. We address the consequences of involuntary cultural change and review studies that have been conducted on mental health issues, psychosomatic symptoms, substance use, and suicidality in Indigenous groups. We conclude by offering suggestions to mitigate mental health problems. Directions for future research on the acculturation of Indigenous groups are also provided.

Antheraea frithi Moore, the source of wild tasar silk, is an indigenous wild silk moth of north-east India. The detailed life history, bionomics and rearing performance of A. frithi in relation to a newly reported food plant, Terminalia arjuna (Roxb.) has been described in the present study. Life cycle of A. frithi has five larval instars. The first instar larva measures 1.98 ± 0.13 cm × 0.198 ± 0.010 cm in length and breadth and 0.0142 ± 0.002 g in weight while the fifth instar larva measures 6.98 ± 0.18 cm × 1.12 ± 0.13 cm in length and breadth and 4.76 ± 0.45 g in weight. Wing span of male and female is recorded as 11.4–13.5 and 13.0–14.7 cm respectively. The incubation period (6–7 days), larval duration (35–39 days), fecundity (162–176 eggs), hatching (78–81 %), effective rate of rearing (57–59 %) and cocoon yield (67–79 nos) has been recorded. The reelable cocoons with a filament length (mts) and filament denier (d) is 493–575 m and 4.6–5.3 respectively. The shell weight (g) of male and female cocoons measures as 0.19–0.39 and 0.2–0.6, respectively. The shell ratio (%) for male and female cocoons stands as 8.1–8.4 and 9.4–9.8 % respectively.  相似文献

To study the use of 1 % isosulfan blue dye in identifying sentinel node, sensitivity and specificity of frozen section and predictive value of sentinel node in predicting other nodal status in the cases of oral cavity and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. 15 patients of oral cavity and oropharyngeal SCC with clinically N0 neck, who required WLE of the primary lesion as well as neck dissection as per recommended treatment protocol, were selected from OPD. 1 % Isosulfan dye was injected peritumorally intraoperatively after the induction of general anaesthesia. Neck dissection was performed and first node taking up the blue dye was identified, dissected, removed and was sent for frozen section. In two of the 15 cases a sentinel node was identified (sensitivity of the technique—13 %). Both the sentinel nodes were positive for presence of metastasis on final histopathology (specificity—100 %). However, five cases had nodal metastasis on final histopathological examination of the neck dissection specimen (sensitivity of sentinel lymph node biopsy—40 %). Frozen section examination had a sensitivity and specificity of 100 %. All data was analyzed using SPSS 16 software. Use of 1 % Isosulfan Dye for identification of sentinel node is a simple and cheap technique, however, it has low sensitivity as compared to the use of triple diagnostic procedure consisting of lymphoscintigraphy, per op gamma probe localization and using isosulfan dye for sentinel node identification. Sentinel lymph node is representative of nodal status and correlates well with the final histopathological examination of the dissected neck nodes.  相似文献
