BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To develop functional foods which are capable of reducing key risk factors for coronary heart disease in an at risk population. The specific hypothesis tested here was that providing bread, cracker biscuits and snack bars fortified with DHA (long-chain omega 3) and soya-protein would havd a positive impact on cholesterol and blood pressure. METHODS AND RESULTS: A pragmatic, double-blind, factorial placebo-controlled randomised trial recruiting 213 middle-aged men and women with untreated elevated total cholesterol or blood pressure. The factors examined were the effect of giving supplies of bread, cereal bars and cracker biscuits fortified with 2 g fish oils (DHA, 22: 6n-3), or 25 g soya-protein (containing 50 mg of isoflavonoids) for five weeks. Primary and secondary outcomes included total, low-density and high-density cholesterol (HDL-C), and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Compliance was assessed using biomarkers and food intake histories. DHA enriched foods increased HDL-C by 6.0% (95% CI 2.5%, 9.6%) but had no effect on total or low-density cholesterol or blood pressure. Overall, soya-protein did not influence any of the outcomes assessed. However, in women only, soya-protein increased systolic blood pressure by 5.9% (95% CI 1.73, 9.9%). CONCLUSIONS: Adding DHA (fish-oils) to staple foods might supplement existing methods to help reduce CVD morbidity and mortality. However, these findings highlight the importance of ensuring that functional foods do not present any harms to particular subgroups within a general population, if they are to be made freely available to consumers. This latter point requires further attention by the research community in relation to soya-protein.  相似文献

The effect of feeding a high-fat diet during the promotion phase of skin tumorigenesis was assessed in SENCAR mice. Tumors were initiated on the backs of mice by application of 10 nmol 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA); the tumors were then promoted beginning one week later with twice weekly treatments of 2 micrograms 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) each in 0.2 ml acetone. Control diet containing 5% corn oil was fed from four weeks before until one week after DMBA treatment in all groups. A high-fat diet (24.6% corn oil) was fed from one week after DMBA treatment; the other groups continued on the control diet. Mice were fed ad libitum, and those given the high-fat diet consumed more calories early in the study than the controls did. Treatment with TPA increased calorie consumption throughout the study. Body weights were elevated in mice fed high-fat diets and reduced by TPA treatment. The average number of papillomas per mouse did not differ between the low- and high-fat groups, but papillomas grew more rapidly on the mice fed a high-fat diet than those fed a low-fat diet. The feeding of a high-fat diet following DMBA treatment, in the absence of TPA administration, did not result in promotion of skin tumors. Therefore, a high-fat diet acted as a copromoter of skin tumors in SENCAR mice.  相似文献

Seven patients with benign lymphoid hyperplasia of the palate are reported. Clinically, these lesions presented as painless non-ulcerated masses that were unilateral in 6 of the cases and bilateral in one. Microscopically, the lesions were characterized by a mixed lymphoid infiltrate, germinal centres and vascular channels with hyperplasia of endothelial cells. The patients were followed for 3–10 years subsequent to diagnosis. One patient had 2 sequential lesions on opposite sides of the palate. Another patient with lesions of both submandibular salivary glands in addition to the palate developed rheumatoid arthritis, xerophthalmia and serologic changes consistent with systemic autoimmune disease. To date, none of the patients developed signs and symptoms of lymphoma or leukemia. The etiology of these lesions is unknown. Their distinction from lymphoma of the palate, as well as their possible relationship to the benign lymphoepithelial lesion of palatal mucous glands, is discussed.  相似文献

Conditioned eyeblink responses were obtained in cats by pairing click (CS) with glabella tap (US) and electrical stimulation of the hypothalamus (HS). Hiss was used as a discriminative stimulus (DS). Onset latencies of conditioned responses (CRs) of 20–56 ms were obtained by using an interstimulus interval (ISI) of 570-10 ms between CS and US-HS. Longer latency (90–320 ms) blink CRs were obtained with ISIs of 340-240 and 340-10 ms. The timing of associatively learned movements has been thought to increase with lengthening of the intervals between CS and US presentation. The production of shorter latency CRs of this type by lengthening the ISI is a novel result and one unexpected from widely held beliefs.  相似文献
