Characteristics of radionuclide contamination of different zones of Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site “Opytnoe pole”

Data on the spatial distribution of radionuclides (²⁴¹Am, ²³⁹Pu, ¹³⁷Cs and ¹⁵²Eu) formed during nuclear explosions of different types near P2 SNTS test site are presented. Radionuclide contamination induced by the explosions varies in the concentrations of individual radionuclides, their proportions and species. Examination of the variations is a crucial task to plan remediation activities as well as those aimed at decrease of radiation risk for population and prevention of repeated contamination. Concentrations of ²⁴¹Am and ^239+240Pu that are the most toxic radionuclides in the area lie in hundred thousands of Bqkg^?1. The most contaminated areas are classified by the radionuclide concentration, ratio and form present in soil.     

Acoustooptic cells with nonuniform length of light-sound interaction

Diffraction of light by acoustic waves that are generated in the acoustooptic cells of piezoelectric transducers with complex geometry is studied. The diffraction by acoustic beams with triangular, quadrangular (rhombic), hexagonal, etc., cross sections, when the lengths of light-sound interaction in the cross-sectional area of the light beam are different, is considered in the plane wave approximation. The difference in the length of interaction affects the instrument function of acoustooptic devices and provides the suppression of the side lobes in their transmission function. The advantages of using cells with complex-geometry transducers in tunable acoustooptic filters that are incorporated into fiber-optic communication lines with wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) are discussed.     

Acid-catalyzed acylation of 4-alkyl-3-azapyrylium salts and the synthesis of 4-acylaminopyrylium salts

4-Alkyl-3-azapyrylium salts undergo acylation at the alkyl group under acid-catalyzed conditions to give 4-acylmethyl-3-azapyrylium derivatives, which upon heating in proton-donating solvents recyclize to give 4-acylaminopyrylium salts.Translated from Khimiya Geterotsiklicheskikh Soedinenii, No. 2, pp. 265–269, February, 1991.     

The crystal and molecular structure of cesium 9,10,11-trimethyl-7,8-dicarba-nido-undecaborate(1-) Cs[9,10,11-Me3-7,8-C2B9H9]

Conclusions By a complete x-ray diffraction study of cesium 9,10,11-trimethyl-7,8-dicarba-nido-undecaborate(1-) we proved the axial orientation of the Me group attached to the B¹⁰ atom of the open face of the nido-carborane polyhedron. This serves as an additional proof of the stereospecificity of the alkylation reaction of the dicarbollide ions and the necessity for a migration stage of the boron atom with the substituent to the site of the deficient apex of the icosahedron to form a derivative with an equatorial disposition of the alkyl group.The atoms in the carborane polyhedron are numbered as in [1].Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Seriya Khimicheskaya, No. 11, pp. 2474–2481, November, 1979.
