This is a report on a panel titled “What are the top ten most influential parallel and distributed processing concepts of the last millennium?” that was held at the IEEE Computer Society sponsored “14th International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS 2000).” The panelists were chosen to represent a variety of perspectives and technical areas. After the panelists had presented their choices for the top ten, an open discussion was held among the audience and panelists. At the end of the discussion, a ballot was distributed for the audience to vote on the top ten concepts (in arbitrary order). The voting identified the following ten most influential parallel and distributed processing concepts of the last millennium: (1) Amdahl's law and scalability, (2) Arpanet and Internet, (3) pipelining, (4) divide and conquer approach, (5) multiprogramming, (6) synchronization (including semaphores), (7) load balancing, (8) message passing and packet switching, (9) cluster computing, and (10) multithreaded (lightweight) program execution.  相似文献

Several studies have shown that food structure causes slower growth rates and narrower growth boundaries of bacteria compared to laboratory media. In predictive microbiology, both aw or corresponding solute concentration (mainly NaCl) have been used as a growth influencing factor for kinetic models or growth/no growth interface models. The majority of these models have been based on data generated in liquid broth media with NaCl as the predominant aw influencing solute. However, in complex food systems, other aw influencing components might be present, next to NaCl. In this study, the growth rate of Salmonella typhimurium was studied in the growth region and the growth/no growth response was tested in Tryptic Soy Broth at 20 °C at varying gelatin concentration (0, 10, 50 g L−1 gelatin), pH (3.25–5.5) and water activity (aw) (0.929–0.996). From the viewpoint of water activity, the results suggest that NaCl is the main aw affecting compound. However, gelatin seemed to have an effect on medium aw too. Moreover, there is also an interaction effect between NaCl and gelatin. From the microbial viewpoint, the results confirmed that the aw decreasing effect of gelatin is less harmful to cells than the effect of Na+ ions. The unexpected shift of the growth/no growth interface to more severe conditions when going from a liquid medium to a medium with 10 g L−1 gelatin is more pronounced when formulating the models in terms of aw than in terms of NaCl concentrations. At 50 g L−1 gelatin, the model factored with NaCl concentration shifts to milder conditions (concordant to literature results) while the model with aw indicates a further shift to more severe conditions, which is due to the water activity lowering effect of gelatin and the interaction between gelatin and NaCl. The results suggest that solute concentration should be used instead of aw, both for kinetic models in the growth region and for growth/no growth interface models, if the transferability of models to solid foods is to be increased.  相似文献

Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (NHPP) is an autosomal dominant disease of peripheral nerves, characterized by recurrent focal neuropathies often with an underlying asymptomatic polyneuropathy. We report the clinical, electrophysiological, and histopathological findings in three families with HNPP and confirm the presence of a deletion on chromosome 17p11.2, including all the markers known to be duplicated in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A. This deletion appears to be the underlying molecular deficit in this disease and provides additional evidence for the importance of this locus for peripheral nerve function.  相似文献

At polar sunrise, gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) undergoes an exceptional dynamic exchange in the air and at the snow surface during which GEM can be rapidly removed from the atmosphere (the so-called atmospheric mercury depletion events (AMDEs)) as well as re-emitted from the snow within a few hours to days in the Polar Regions. Although high concentrations of total mercury in snow following AMDEs is well documented, there is very little data available on the redox transformation processes of mercury in the snow and the fluxes of mercury at the air/snow interface. Therefore, the net gain of mercury in the Polar Regions as a result of AMDEs is still an open question. We developed a new version of the global mercury model, GRAHM, which includes for the first time bidirectional surface exchange of GEM in Polar Regions in spring and summer by developing schemes for mercury halogen oxidation, deposition, and re-emission. Also for the first time, GOME satellite data-derived boundary layer concentrations of BrO have been used in a global mercury model for representation of halogen mercury chemistry. Comparison of model simulated and measured atmospheric concentrations of GEM at Alert, Canada, for 3 years (2002-2004) shows the model's capability in simulating the rapid cycling of mercury during and after AMDEs. Brooks et al. (1) measured mercury deposition, reemission, and net surface gain fluxes of mercury at Barrow, AK, during an intensive measurement campaign for a 2 week period in spring (March 25 to April 7, 2003). They reported 1.7, 1.0 +/- 0.2, and 0.7 +/- 0.2 microg m(-2) deposition, re-emission, and net surface gain, respectively. Using the optimal configuration of the model, we estimated 1.8 microg m(-2) deposition, 1.0 microg m(-2) re-emission, and 0.8 microg m(-2) net surface gain of mercury for the same time period at Barrow. The estimated net annual accumulation of mercury within the Arctic Circle north of 66.5 degrees is approximately 174 t with +/-7 t of interannual variability for 2002-2004 using the optimal configuration. We estimated the uncertainty of the model results to the Hg/Br reaction rate coefficient to be approximately 6%. Springtime is clearly demonstrated as the most active period of mercury exchanges and net surface gain (approximately 46% of annual accumulation) in the Arctic.  相似文献

Performance of a parallel algorithm on a parallel machine depends not only on the time complexity of the algorithm, but also on how the underlying machine supports the fundamental operations used by the algorithm. This study analyzes various mappings of image correlation algorithms in SIMD, MIMD, and mixed-mode environments. Experiments were conducted on the Intel Paragon, MasPar MP-1, nCUBE 2, and PASM prototype. The machine features considered in this study include: modes of parallelism, communication/computation ratio, network topology and implementation, SIMD CU/PE overlap, and communication/computation overlap. Performance of an implementation can be enhanced by using algorithmic techniques that match the machine features. Some algorithmic techniques discussed here are additional communication versus redundant computation, data block transfers, and communication/computation overlap. The results presented are applicable to a large class of image processing tasks. Case studies, such as the one presented here, are a necessary step in developing software tools for mapping an application task onto a single parallel machine and for mapping the subtasks of an application task, or a set of independent application tasks, onto a heterogeneous suite of parallel machines.  相似文献

The effect of monopotassium phosphate (KH(2)PO(4)) on the chemical environment and on growth of Listeria innocua and Lactococcus lactis in coculture were investigated in a liquid and in a gelled microbiological medium at 12 degrees C and an initial pH of 6.2. As expected, addition of KH(2)PO(4) to both the liquid and gelled media resulted in an increase in buffering capacity. This effect on buffering capacity changed the profiles of lactic acid dissociation and pH evolution. At all gelatin concentrations studied, addition of KH(2)PO(4) increased the growth rate and the stationary cell concentration of L. lactis. In addition, the growth rate of L. innocua slightly increased but, in contrast, the stationary cell concentration remained unchanged. A new class of predictive models developed previously in our research team to quantify the effect of food model gel structure on microbial growth [Antwi, M., Bernaerts, K., Van Impe, J. F., Geeraerd, A. H., 2007. Modelling the combined effect of food model system and lactic acid on L. innocua and L. lactis growth in mono- and coculture. International Journal of Food Microbiology 120, 71-84] was applied. Our analysis indicate that KH(2)PO(4) influenced the parameters of the chemical and microbiological subprocesses of the model. Nonetheless, the growth model satisfactorily predicted the stationary cell concentration when (i) the undissociated lactic acid concentrations at which L. innocua and L. lactis growth cease were chosen as previously reported, and (ii) all other parameters of the chemical and microbiological subprocesses were computed for each medium. This confirms that the undissociated lactic acid concentrations at which growth ceases is a unique property of a bacterium and does not, within our case study, depend on growth medium. The study indicates that microbial growth depends on the interplay between the individual food components which affect the physicochemical properties of the food, such as the buffering capacity. Towards future research, it can be concluded that mathematical models which embody the effect of buffering capacity are needed for accurate predictions of microbial growth in food systems.  相似文献
