A new controller for boost dc–dc converters based on a novel sliding surface

ABSTRACT

In this paper, two control schemes for boost converters affected by uncertainties in input voltage and load are proposed. The boost converter dynamics is redefined in terms of new state variables to facilitate the use of a disturbance observer that can estimate matched and unmatched disturbances. A sliding surface, which is new in the context of boost converters, is proposed to enable tracking and regulation of output voltage without requiring measurement of input voltage and load current. The stability of the overall system including the disturbance observer, the sliding variable and the output is proved. The performance of the schemes is assessed for regulation of output voltage and tracking of reference voltage by simulation as well as experimentation in which various types of uncertainties and various types of reference voltages are considered.     

Numerical implementation of drop and tilt method of five-axis tool positioning for tensor product surfaces

The Drop and Tilt tool position method for five-axis machining positions a toroidal tool to have two points of contact with a tensor product Bézier surface. The method results in high order simultaneous non-linear transcendental equations that are slow to solve. In this paper, an efficient numerical implementation of the Drop and Tilt Method of multi-point tool positioning on tensor product surfaces is presented. The method was implemented in C++, and is a direct method that does not convert the tensor product surface into an intermediate representation such as triangles or point clouds. The method is successfully demonstrated on a number of tensor product Bézier surfaces.

Analysis of surface wave behavior in corrugated piezomagnetic layer resting on inhomogeneous half-space

This paper deals with propagation of Love type waves in a Piezomagnetic layer with corrugated boundaries overlying an inhomogeneous half-space. Inhomogeneity of elastic half-space is caused due to exponential variations in elastic parameters. Dispersion relations are obtained for magnetically open and short cases. Prominent effects of inhomogeneity, layer's width and corrugation on the phase velocity of considered wave are illustrated through graphs. Some particular cases are derived and exhibited through graphs. Also the influence of undulation parameter, elastic parameter, and piezomagnetic coefficient on phase velocity of considered wave has been marked separately. The present study finds its applications in designing and optimization of Love wave sensors and Seismic Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices. Findings may also be used for analytical study of wave propagation in piezomagnetic coupled structures.     

Cocaine Induces Cytoskeletal Changes in Cardiac Myocytes: Implications for Cardiac Morphology

Cocaine is one of the most widely abused illicit drugs worldwide and has long been recognised as an agent of cardiac dysfunction in numerous cases of drug overdose. Cocaine has previously been shown to up-regulate cytoskeletal rearrangements and morphological changes in numerous tissues; however, previous literature observes such changes primarily in clinical case reports and addiction studies. An investigation into the fundamental cytoskeletal parameters of migration, adhesion and proliferation were studied to determine the cytoskeletal and cytotoxic basis of cocaine in cardiac cells. Treatment of cardiac myocytes with cocaine increased cell migration and adhesion (p < 0.05), with no effect on cell proliferation, except with higher doses eliciting (1–10 μg/mL) its diminution and increase in cell death. Cocaine downregulated phosphorylation of cofilin, decreased expression of adhesion modulators (integrin-β3) and increased expression of ezirin within three hours of 1 μg/mL treatments. These functional responses were associated with changes in cellular morphology, including alterations in membrane stability and a stellate-like phenotype with less compaction between cells. Higher dose treatments of cocaine (5–10 μg/mL) were associated with significant cardiomyocyte cell death (p < 0.05) and loss of cellular architecture. These results highlight the importance of cocaine in mediating cardiomyocyte function and cytotoxicity associated with the possible loss of intercellular contacts required to maintain normal cell viability, with implications for cardiotoxicity relating to hypertrophy and fibrogenesis.
