Synergistic antimicrobial effect of lactocin AL705 and nisin combined with organic acid salts against Listeria innocua 7 in broth and a hard cheese

The effectiveness of antimicrobial mixtures against Listeria innocua 7, used as a L. monocytogenes surrogate, was investigated in broth and a food system. Synergistic effects were found for nisin (Nis), potassium sorbate (PS), calcium propionate (CP) and sodium lactate (SL), Nis + PS being the most effective binary mixture that exhibited listericidal activity in broth. To assess the effect of adding lactocin AL705 (AL705) to Nis + organic acid salt combinations, tridimensional isobolograms were generated. Sub-MIC combinations of the antimicrobials exerted bactericidal activity against L. innocua 7 after AL705 addition to the binary mixtures. However, when applied on Sardo cheese contaminated with L. innocua 7 (initial inoculum 4.45 ± 0.06 CFU g⁻¹), only Nis + PS + AL705 produced count reductions respect to the control, reaching 3.04 ± 0.35 CFU g⁻¹ counts after 15 days at 15 °C. Ternary combinations containing AL705 showed potential to reduce antimicrobial usages for L. innocua 7 inhibition.     

In-laboratory removal of femoral sheath following protamine administration in patients having intracoronary stent implantation

Two hundred twenty-eight patients with successful coronary stent implantation were randomized either to protamine administration and femoral sheath removal (group I, n = 117) or no heparin neutralization and delayed sheath removal (group II, n = 111). The hospital stay after treatment was shorter in patients receiving protamine; therefore, protamine use for neutralizing circulating heparin may be safely administered immediately after stent implantation.     

Perspectives of Stirling engines use for distributed generation in Brazil

This work presents an evaluation of the development of Stirling engines and the advantages and the main obstacles against their widespread introduction in energy-generation practices. It also shows how the economic, technical and environmental characteristics presented by these engines support their insertion in the energy sector. An economic and environmental evaluation of this technology aiming at introducing it in the Brazilian energy scenario is also presented. Changes in legislation, financing and technology within the next few years must encourage the implementation of alternative generation technologies that present lower environmental impacts. Also, tendencies and economical studies are presented, trying to find the optimal condition for this technology to be feasible. The option regarding the trading of carbon credits when biomass is used as fuel is analyzed as well.     

Improved PPM schemes for IR-wireless LAN

The authors present a modified PPM modulation technique for infra-red wireless LAN that improves the spectral efficiency of the system significantly. The resulting signal (improved PPM or IPPM), which is based on FQPSK IJF filters, is jitter- and ISI-free and can be recovered with any PPM standard receiver     

Determination of carbofuran by GLC/NPD and HPLC in tomato fruits

Summary Two analytical methods, using GLC/NPD and HPLC to analyse carbofuran residues in tomatoes, are described. Both methods have shown a high recovery rate, up to 90%, and their detection limits are below the maximum residue limit set by Codex Alimentarius Mundi for carbofuran in tomatoes. Therefore, both methods may be of use in routine analysis of this pesticide in those fruits.

Rückstandsanalyse von Carbofuran in Tomaten mit GLC/NPD und HPLC

Zusammenfassung Beschrieben werden zwei Arbeitsweisen zur Analyse von Rückständen des Methylcarbamat-Insecticids Carbofuran, die sich gut für routinemäßige Untersuchungen von Tomaten eignen. Die Wiederfin-dungsrate liegt über 90% und die Nachweisgrenze deutlich unter der Höchstmenge des Codex Alimentarius von 0,1 mg/kg.
