Zebra mussels, first discovered in the Great Lakes in 1988, have frequently been detected in fire protection systems. However, the potential for large-scale infestations has not been established. It is clear that even small numbers of mussels can cause problems in areas that have small-diameter piping or in sprinkler system nozzles, if shells are flushed down-stream during emergency use. This paper will discuss the development of a method of zebra mussel control that limited interference with normal system operations when used at Niagara Mohawk's Dunkirk Steam Station. Because oxygen is often depressed in these systems and limits mussels survival and growth, it was established that by monitoring oxygen alone, or in combination with veliger or mussel larval monitoring, high-risk areas for mussel infestation could be determined. In previous laboratory research, it had already been determined that concentrations of potassium in excess of 100 mg/L would lead to quick mortality in adult zebra mussels. These results, along with a biofouling risk assessment completed at Dunkirk Steam Station, were used to develop and implement a successful treatment of the high-risk areas in the plant's fire protection water systems using potassium in the form of potash as the controlling agent.  相似文献

Infection of cells by picornaviruses of the rhinovirus, aphthovirus, and enterovirus groups results in the shutoff of host protein synthesis but allows viral protein synthesis to proceed. Although considerable evidence suggests that this shutoff is mediated by the cleavage of eukaryotic translation initiation factor eIF4G by sequence-specific viral proteases (2A protease in the case of coxsackievirus), several experimental observations are at variance with this view. Thus, the cleavage of other cellular proteins could contribute to the shutoff of host protein synthesis and stimulation of viral protein synthesis. Recent evidence indicates that the highly conserved 70-kDa cytoplasmic poly(A)-binding protein (PABP) participates directly in translation initiation. We have now found that PABP is also proteolytically cleaved during coxsackievirus infection of HeLa cells. The cleavage of PABP correlated better over time with the host translational shutoff and onset of viral protein synthesis than did the cleavage of eIF4G. In vitro experiments with purified rabbit PABP and recombinant human PABP as well as in vivo experiments with Xenopus oocytes and recombinant Xenopus PABP demonstrate that the cleavage is catalyzed by 2A protease directly. N- and C-terminal sequencing indicates that cleavage occurs uniquely in human PABP at 482VANTSTQTM downward arrowGPRPAAAAAA500, separating the four N-terminal RNA recognition motifs (80%) from the C-terminal homodimerization domain (20%). The N-terminal cleavage product of PABP is less efficient than full-length PABP in restoring translation to a PABP-dependent rabbit reticulocyte lysate translation system. These results suggest that the cleavage of PABP may be another mechanism by which picornaviruses alter the rate and spectrum of protein synthesis.  相似文献

Jet cup attrition testing is a common method for evaluating particle attrition in fixed fluidized beds and circulating fluidized beds. An attrition index, calculated from jet cup data, is used to compare with one or more reference materials. However, this method is far from perfect despite its popularity. Results obtained at Particulate Solid Research, Inc. (PSRI) in different-sized jet cups and a 29-cm (11.5-in.) diameter fluidized bed test unit did not provide the same ranking of catalyst with respect to particle attrition. To obtain a better understanding of attrition in a jet cup, both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and cold flow studies were performed with a 2.5-cm (1-in.) diameter Davison-type jet cup and PSRI's cylindrical 7.6-cm (3-in.) diameter jet cup. Results showed that a significant amount of material in the Davison and PSRI jet cup remained stagnant. Based on these results and additional CFD modeling, PSRI designed a new jet cup, where most of the material was hydrodynamically active. The new jet cup showed a 25% increase in attrition compared to PSRI's cylindrical jet cup under similar conditions and run times. Results were also compared to cyclone attrition data for several materials at PSRI. The new jet cup provided data that correlated with attrition results from the 29-cm (11.5-in.) diameter fluidized bed unit.  相似文献

Practice of different tasks in a random order induces better retention than practicing them in a blocked order, a phenomenon known as the contextual interference (CI) effect. Our purpose was to investigate whether the CI effect exists in sequence learning, such that practicing different sequences in a random order will result in better learning of sequences than practicing them in blocks, and whether this effect is affected by aging. Subjects practiced a serial reaction time task where a set of three 4-element sequences were arranged in blocks or in a random order on 2 successive days. Subjects were divided into 4 groups based on a 2-GROUP (young or old) by 2-ORDER (random or blocked practice) between-subject design. Three days after practice (Day 5), subjects were tested with practiced and novel sequences to evaluate sequence-specific learning. The results replicate the CI effect in sequence learning in both young and older adults. Older adults retained sequences better when trained in a random condition than in a blocked condition, although the random condition incurs greater task switching costs in older adults during practice. Our study underscores the distinction between age-related effects on learning vs. performance, and offers practical implications for enhancing skill learning in older adults. Previous studies have shown double dissociations between win–stay and win–shift radial maze learning in terms of their underlying neural substrates. To examine the content of the associations formed in the two tasks, the authors devalued the food unconditioned stimulus (UCS) by taste aversion to differentiate stimulus–stimulus(CS–UCS) and stimulus–response (CS–CR) learning. UCS devaluation was performed in rats that were over- or undertrained on the win–stay task. Devaluation substantially reduced food consumption on the maze but failed to disrupt choice accuracy, regardless of the amount of training. Devaluation did not affect latency in overtrained rats but did increase latency in undertrained rats. In the win–shift task, devaluation caused rats to reject the reinforcer, yet they continued to accurately win–shift, but with significantly longer latencies (Experiment 3). The results suggest that an S–R association may mediate performance after extended win–stay training. In contrast, a UCS representation appears to be recalled during early win–stay and win–shift performance. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Habit learning refers to the incremental implicit learning of associations. Patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) exhibit deficits in explicit memory and in conceptual implicit memory tasks that rely on the cortical areas damaged in AD. The authors tested patients with AD and controls on a probabilistic classification task in which participants implicitly acquire cue-outcome associations. Both groups showed evidence of learning across 50 trials, and performance did not differ significantly between the groups. In contrast, patients with AD exhibited a profound impairment in explicit memory for the testing episode. These results are consistent with the idea that habit learning relies on subcortical structures, including the basal ganglia, and is independent of the medial temporal and cortical areas damaged in AD. The effect of hippocampal seizures in rats was assessed in two spatial memory tasks: The reference memory task was a simultaneous two-choice discrimination in a T-maze. The working memory task was a delayed conditional discrimination in a radial arm maze. In each task the hippocampus of each rat was stimulated to seizure after the presentation of the information to be remembered. In the reference memory task, hippocampal seizures did not impair acquisition, whether the stimulation was given immediately after or 4 hr after the presentation of the stimuli to be remembered. In the working memory task, hippocampal seizures did impair performance in a group of the same rats. These results support the distinction between a trial-dependent working memory system that requires hippocampal function and a trial-independent memory system that does not depend on hippocampal function. A method of analysing solids downflow through standpipe and slide valve in the moving bed mode is presented. The method is based on combining Yoon and Kunii equations for moving-bed flow with a proposed modified orifice equation for gas—solid flow. The analysis correctly predicts the observed trend of the effects of gas injection into the standpipe. It also provides quantitative prediction of the conditions for transition from moving-bed flow to dense phase fluidized solids flow and to lean phase “streaming flow”. The latter flow pattern refers to solids streaming down a tube at high voidage typified by the discharge of solid down a tube with no constriction at the lower end of the tube. Further work is required to test the general applicability of the present analysis and to extend the analysis to yield a generalized quantitative flow regime diagram for downflow of solids in a pipe.  相似文献

Many of the probes used to understand hydrodynamics in circulating fluidized bed risers intrude into the environment they are measuring, although assumptions are typically asserted that the intrusive probes do not affect the data collected. This could be a poor assumption in some cases and conditions. We found that intrusive fiber‐optic probe measurements consistently mis‐predicted the solids concentration compared to the nonintrusive pressure drop measurements outside the fully developed flow region of a riser containing fluid catalytic cracking catalyst or glass bead particles. The discrepancy was sensitive to superficial gas velocity, solid circulation rate, probe position, and flow direction. Barracuda VR? computational fluid dynamics simulations confirmed this, and indicated that particle momentum was lost at the leading edge of the probe and particles were spilling over to the probe tip. Accordingly, new probe designs were proposed to mitigate the intrusiveness of a fiber‐optic probe for more accurate characterization. © 2017 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 63: 5361–5374, 2017  相似文献
