Exploring the deep biosphere

Over the past two decades, scientific drilling into sediments and rocks in the ocean and the continent has revealed the presence of physiologically and phylogenetically complex microbial life in the deep subsurface. Microorganisms, most of which have no cultured or known relatives in the surface biosphere, have been discovered in sediments and rock at depth as deep as 1 km below the seafloor and more than 3 km deep in the continent. The influence of head restraint and occupant factors on peak head/neck kinematics in low-speed rear-end collisions.

Prior two-way analyses of variance showed that the peak kinematic response of the head and neck of subjects exposed to low-speed rear-end collisions was related to speed change and gender, however potential reasons for this gender dependence were not determined. Using multiple linear regression, this study further examined these response data to determine the relative influence of specific factors, including subject anthropometry, neck strength, cervical range of motion, seated posture and head restraint position, which may have been responsible for the previously-observed gender dependence. The results of this analysis showed that vehicle speed change and relative head restraint position explained the largest proportion of the observed variation in peak occupant kinematic response. Seated posture measures also explained some of the variation in kinematic response. The current analysis prioritizes which variables to explore more thoroughly in future research and which variables should be carefully controlled in future studies.

本文研究了Windows操作系统下I／O端口应用问题，用VC^ 6．0嵌入汇编语言技术，为“远传水表系统”项目开发了Modem通讯软件，并给出了部分实现函数。实践表明，软件运行良好。     

小波多分辨分析在往复式活塞隔膜泵故障诊断中的应用研究

从振动信号的角度出发,探讨了用时域特征作为诊断参数,提取经过多分辨分析各个不同频带的时域参数作为特征向量,进行隔膜泵状态监测和故障诊断的可行性。为隔膜泵的状态监测和故障诊断方法的研究开辟了一个新思路。

我矿副井提升机为斜井双钩串车平车场提升机，主要提升任务是升降物料、设备和提升矸石。为2JK-2．5／30双滚筒单绳缠绕式交流提升机，配套TKD-A2-1186(Ⅰ)型电气控制系统，配置KZG(D)SCR动力制动电源装置，主电动机型号为JRl37-10，额定功率为15．5kW，额定转速为585r／min。     

The charged region of Hsp90 modulates the function of the N-terminal domain

Hsp90, an abundant heat shock protein that is highly expressed even under physiological conditions, is involved in the folding of key molecules of the cellular signal transduction system such as kinases and steroid receptors. It seems to contain two chaperone sites differing in substrate specificity. Binding of ATP or the antitumor drug geldanamycin alters the substrate affinity of the N-terminal chaperone site, whereas both substances show no influence on the C-terminal one. In wild-type Hsp90 the fragments containing the chaperone sites are connected by a highly charged linker of various lengths in different organisms. As this linker region represents the most striking difference between bacterial and eukaryotic Hsp90s, it may be involved in a gain of function of eukaryotic Hsp90s. Here, we have analyzed a fragment of yeast Hsp90 consisting of the N-terminal domain and the charged region (N272) in comparison with the isolated N-terminal domain (N210). We show that the charged region causes an increase in the affinity of the N-terminal domain for nonnative protein and establishes a crosstalk between peptide and ATP binding. Thus, the binding of peptide to N272 decreases its affinity for ATP and geldanamycin, whereas the ATP-binding properties of the monomeric N-terminal domain N210 are not influenced by peptide binding. We propose that the charged region connecting the two chaperone domains plays an important role in regulating chaperone function of Hsp90.     

Statistical methods for mapping quantitative trait loci from a dense set of markers

Lander and Botstein introduced statistical methods for searching an entire genome for quantitative trait loci (QTL) in experimental organisms, with emphasis on a backcross design and QTL having only additive effects. We extend their results to intercross and other designs, and we compare the power of the resulting test as a function of the magnitude of the additive and dominance effects, the sample size and intermarker distances. We also compare three methods for constructing confidence regions for a QTL: likelihood regions, Bayesian credible sets, and support regions. We show that with an appropriate evaluation of the coverage probability a support region is approximately a confidence region, and we provide a theroretical explanation of the empirical observation that the size of the support region is proportional to the sample size, not the square root of the sample size, as one might expect from standard statistical theory.
