Polymer coating method developed for carbon stripper foils

The problem of handling the fragile carbon foils (mounting on the frame, placing in the stripper changer) that easily break when self-supporting has been solved by coating carbon foils with poly-monochloro-para-xylylene. It was found that the polymer-coating method could also be used to produce carbon foils thicker than 100 μg/cm² by alternated deposition of carbon and poly-monochloro-para-xylylene layers. Carbon foil of 500 μg/cm² thick and 10 cm in diameter was produced by this method and mounted to a foil holder. Results of lifetime measurement for singly coated foils are also presented.     

Posttraumatic stress symptoms and depression in mothers of children with severe burn injuries

This study examined posttraumatic stress symptoms and depressive symptoms in mothers of children with burn injuries from accidentally falling into a bathtub filled with hot water. Subjects were 16 pairs, children with burn injuries and their mothers. Psychiatric interviews were administered to the mothers to check the presence or absence of mental disorders. The severity of mothers' depressive symptoms was rated on the Hamilton Depression Scale. Prevalence rates of DSM-IV posttraumatic stress disorder and major depression were 6.3% and 0% in children with burn injury and 12.5% and 18.8% in their mothers, respectively. For three symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (intense distress at similar event, restricted range of affect, and hypervigilance), prevalence rates were significantly higher for the mothers than for the children. Ratings of the three symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder for the mothers were significantly and positively correlated with scores for guilt feelings. Compared with children with burn injury, mothers are prone to posttraumatic stress symptoms mixed with guilt feelings for children with burn injury.     

Effects of flow rate on sensitivity and affinity in flow injection biosensor systems studied by 55-MHz wireless quartz crystal microbalance

In this paper, we developed a 55-MHz wireless-electrodeless quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and systematically studied the effects of flow rate on the sensitivity to the detection of proteins and on the affinity between biomolecules evaluated by the flow injection system. Brownian motion of proteins in liquid suggests a low probability of meeting, and the convection effect plays an important role in the sensitivity and the affinity in the flow cell injection system. The wireless quartz crystal was isolated in the QCM cell, and flow rates between 50 and 1000 microL/min were used for monitoring binding reactions between human immunoglobulin G and Staphylococcus aureus protein A. The sensitivity was significantly increased as the flow rate increased, while the affinity value remained unchanged. However, the affinity value was affected by the reaction time for a large-concentration analyte, indicating the need of a high-sensitivity biosensor system for accurate evaluation of affinity. The electrode effect on the QCM sensitivity was also theoretically investigated, showing that the electrode significantly deteriorates the QCM sensitivity and makes the Sauerbrey equation invalid.     

Radiation protection system at the RIKEN RI beam factory

The RIKEN RI (radioactive isotope) Beam Factory is scheduled to commence operations in 2006, and its maximum energy will be 400 MeV u(-1) for ions lighter than Ar and 350 MeV u(-1) for uranium. The beam intensity will be 1 pmicroA (6 x 10(12) particles s(-1)) for any element at the goal. For the hands-on-maintenance and the rational shield thickness of the building, the beam loss must be controlled with several kinds of monitors. Three types of radiation monitors will be installed. The first one consists of a neutron dose equivalent monitor and an ionisation chamber, which are commercially available area monitors. The second one is a conventional hand-held dose equivalent monitor wherein the logarithmic signal is read by a programmable logic controller based on the radiation safety interlock system (HIS). The third one is a simple plastic scintillator called a beam loss monitor. All the monitors have threshold levels for alarm and beam stop, and HIS reads all these signals.     

Beam Current Monitor with a High-Tc Current Sensor and SQUID at the RIBF

It is widely recognized that non-destructive measurement at high resolution of the DC current of high-energy heavy-ion beams is important. Therefore, a high critical temperature (HTc) superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) beam current monitor has been developed for use in the radioactive isotope beam factory (RIBF) at RIKEN in Japan. Unlike at other existing facilities, a low-vibration, pulse-tube refrigerator cools the HTc fabrications including the SQUID in such a way that the size of the system is reduced and the running costs are lowered. As a result, using a prototype of the HTc SQUID monitor, the intensity of a 1 μA Xe beam (50 MeV/u) was successfully measured with 100 nA resolution. Furthermore, since a higher resolution is necessary, development of an improved HTc current sensor with two coils has begun. A spraying machine was developed to fabricate the new HTc current sensor by dip-coating a thin layer of Bi₂–Sr₂–Ca₂–Cu₃–O _x (Bi-2223) onto a 99.6 % MgO ceramic substrate. Results from a new HTc current sensor produced using this machine are reported here.     

Burns in a suicide attempt related to psychiatric side effects of interferon

Tardive dystonia is one of the most serious adverse events of typical neuroleptic treatments. They differ from tardive dyskinesia by their clinical and evolutive features. The occurrence of tardive dystonia due to new antipsychotics remained unknown. For the first time in the literature, we report a case of typical tardive dystonia occurring in a young male schizophrenic patient treated for 8 months with risperidone. No remission was observed despite several therapeutics including botulinic toxin.     

Kidney transplantation and liaison psychiatry, part I: anxiety before, and the prevalence rate of psychiatric disorders before and after, transplantation

We examined psychiatric problems before and after kidney transplantation in a sample of 36 patients with end-stage renal failure. The prevalence rate of psychiatric disorders was 11.1% (4 of 36 cases) before the transplantation and 36.1% (13 of 36 cases) within 2 months after the transplantation. Except for a patient with schizophrenic disorder, no patients were found to have a psychiatric disorder from 2 to 6 months after the transplantation. In this study, we also examined anxieties and/or conflicts related to the transplantation using the synthetic house-tree-person (HTP) drawing test, a measure of mood states by means of a non-verbal expression method. The upper part of the tree trunk was not drawn in 25% of this sample (5 of 20 cases). In the HTP drawing tests immediately after the transplantation, however, trees missing the upper part of trunk were not drawn. Based on these findings, we discussed psychiatric problems in kidney transplantation.
