Successful Aging     
This issue's Works in Progress department presents six abstracts for projects that are developing interesting solutions to the elderly's quality of life challenges. The first two abstracts discuss projects that will help provide the elderly with freedom and independence by instrumenting their environments with supportive technology. The next two abstracts discuss projects building specialized user interfaces for addressing some of the challenges associated with aging, such as vision impairment. The final two abstracts present projects that will aid independence for the elderly by providing remote monitoring and assistance.  相似文献

The step away from a synchronized or cue-based brain-computer interface (BCI) and from laboratory conditions towards real world applications is very important and crucial in BCI research. This work shows that ten naive subjects can be trained in a synchronous paradigm within three sessions to navigate freely through a virtual apartment, whereby at every junction the subjects could decide by their own, how they wanted to explore the virtual environment (VE). This virtual apartment was designed similar to a real world application, with a goal-oriented task, a high mental workload, and a variable decision period for the subject. All subjects were able to perform long and stable motor imagery over a minimum time of 2 s. Using only three electroencephalogram (EEG) channels to analyze these imaginations, we were able to convert them into navigation commands. Additionally, it could be demonstrated that motivation is a very crucial factor in BCI research; motivated subjects perform much better than unmotivated ones.  相似文献

The feasibility of an optical phased array antenna applicable for spaceborne laser communications was experimentally demonstrated. Heterodyne optical phase-locked loops provide for a defined phase relationship between the collimated output beams of three single-mode fibers. In the far field the beams interfere with a measured efficiency of 99%. The main lobe of the interference pattern can be moved by phase shifting the subaperture output beams. The setup permitted agile beam steering within an angular range of 1 mr and a response time of 0.7 ms. We propose an operational optical phased array antenna fed by seven lasers, featuring high transmit power and redundance.  相似文献

With the aid of the van Cittert-Zernike theorem we develop an analytical expression for the ensemble-averaged heterodyne mixing efficiency in coherent lidar receivers that are looking at a diffuse target that is in the receiver's far field. Our extremely simple and straightforward analysis shows that the dependence of the mixing efficiency on the receive aperture size d(R) first follows a parabolic decrease and later approaches a (d(R))(-2) function. As a consequence, the signal-to-noise ratio does not increase proportionally to the aperture area but saturates. For the system model chosen, the heterodyne mixing efficiency exhibits the same functional dependence on the lidar geometry as the reciprocal of the number of speckle cells within the receive aperture.  相似文献

Using the concept of leaky modes, we derive the minimum length of a single-mode fiber required to act as a spatial-mode filter of given quality. The degree of filter action is defined by the ratio of power carried by the fundamental mode to that carried by the leaky modes.  相似文献

We study optical terminals with both communication and ranging capabilities for their potential use in short range free-space applications, typically encountered within a cluster of microsatellites. For our considerations we assume satellites with a unit mass between 10 kg and 100 kg, with mutual distances on the order of a few km, and per link data rates range from a few kbits/s to some 100 Mbit/s. We discuss possible network topologies and multiple access methods, andcompare the performance characteristics of different intensity modulation formats, taking into account not only the task of communication but also that of accurate intra-cluster distance measurement. Our considerations revealbasic tradeoffs to be observed when designing such multifunctional optical terminals.  相似文献
