This paper reports results from an experimental pilot study performed to quantify the manual dexterity of older Mexican American adults. The Purdue pegboard test, a two-arm coordination test, and a hand-tool dexterity test were used in this study. To enable cross-sectional comparisons of manual dexterity measures of older Mexican American adults with young Mexican American adults, these tests were administered to 18 older Mexican American adults aged 63–85 (mean age: 71.3 years, SD: 7.0 years), recruited from senior recreation centers in El Paso, and eighteen young adults aged 21–32 (mean age: 25.6 years, SD: 3.8 years) recruited from the student body at the University of Texas at El Paso. For the Purdue pegboard test, the number of pegs placed in 30 s using the preferred hand, the non-preferred hand, and both hands were first individually monitored. Then, scores on an assembly task using the Purdue pegboard were obtained. For the two-arm coordination test, participants were required to trace a star pattern with a stylus using both hands. The time for task completion and the number of errors made during task performance were monitored. For the hand-tool dexterity test, participants were required to use common hand tools and remove nuts and bolts from one side of a wooden upright, and to assemble nuts and bolts in the corresponding holes on the other side of the upright. The time taken for task completion was recorded. Since modified Levene's test showed equality of variances, two sample t-tests, comparing the mean responses of older adults with the mean responses of young adults for each individual test, were conducted. Results indicate that responses for the older adults were statistically significant different (p<0.001) from young adults for all Purdue pegboard tasks. On the average, older adults performed significantly slower (p<0.001) than young adults on the two-arm coordination test, and committed more errors before task completion (p<0.05). Older adults also took longer to complete the hand-tool dexterity task compared to their younger counterparts (p<0.05). In addition to the t-tests, manual dexterity performance measures from older adults were regressed with age to determine the cross-sectional age effects on manual dexterity measures. Results indicate that all Purdue pegboard performance measures were significantly affected by age (p<0.05). The time to complete the two-arm coordination test was significantly linearly related to age (p<0.05). However, the number of errors committed by older adults in the performance of the two-arm coordination test was not significantly linearly related to age. Time to complete the hand-tool dexterity was also significantly linearly related to age (p<0.05). Accommodating age-related changes in manual dexterity is important for job design in industry, especially in industries employing older adults requiring significant assembly and hand-tool use.

Given the aging of the industrial workforce, it is important to understand how manual dexterity is affected by age, so that jobs requiring significant manual dexterity for task initiation, task performance and task completion are designed to fit older adult dexterity levels.  相似文献

L. Ljung's (1977) method for analyzing recursive stochastic algorithms is used to formulate a projection operator ordinary differential equation (ODE). The ODE describes the expected convergence dynamics of a noniterative spherical subspace tracker. The subspace ODE is a Riccati equation defined over the manifold of rank r projection matrices in Cnxn. A Lyapunov function is defined that is shown to have global maximum and minimum at the signal and noise subspaces, respectively. By taking a derivative of the Lyapunov function along any trajectory, it is shown that the dynamics force all trajectories to converge to the signal subspace. If the sign of the derivative is changed, all trajectories will converge to the noise subspace  相似文献

In the retinas of teleost fish dopamine, released from interplexiform cells, modulates synaptic transmission at both the chemical and electrical synapses of retinal horizontal cells. This modulation is due to activation of adenylate cyclase and phosphorylation by protein kinase A, perhaps of the synaptic ion channel proteins themselves. In this study we have fractionated the white perch retina by Percoll density gradient centrifugation in order to identify proteins which coenrich with horizontal cells. In addition we have tested retinal fractions for phosphorylation by native cAMP-dependent kinase. Our findings indicate that there are at least 3 proteins of molecular weights 28, 43/44 and 50 kDa which coenrich with horizontal cells and 3 proteins of 30/31 kDa, 35 kDa (putative rhodopsin) and 48 kDa (putative arrestin) which coenrich with photoreceptor fractions. The 43/44 kDa phosphoprotein is a target for cAMP-dependent protein phosphorylation and thus is apparently an element of the dopaminergic modulatory pathway in perch horizontal cells.  相似文献

This work studied the effects of adding short basalt fibers (BFs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), both separately and in combination, on the mechanical properties, fracture toughness, and electrical conductivity of an epoxy polymer. The surfaces of the short BFs were either treated using a silane coupling agent or further functionalized by atmospheric plasma to enhance the adhesion between the BFs and the epoxy. The results of a single fiber fragmentation test demonstrated a significantly improved BF/epoxy adhesion upon applying the plasma treatment to the BFs. This resulted in better mechanical properties and fracture toughness of the composites containing the plasma-activated BFs. The improved BF/epoxy adhesion also affected the hybrid toughening performance of the BFs and MWCNTs. In particular, synergistic toughening effects were observed when the plasma-activated BFs/MWCNTs hybrid modifiers were used, while only additive toughening effects occurred for the silane-sized BFs/MWCNTs hybrid modifiers. This work demonstrated a potential to develop strong, tough, and electrically conductive epoxy composites by adding hybrid BF/MWCNT modifiers.  相似文献

We provide a general framework for constructing digital dynamical decoupling sequences based on Walsh modulation—applicable to arbitrary qubit decoherence scenarios. By establishing equivalence between decoupling design based on Walsh functions and on concatenated projections, we identify a family of optimal Walsh sequences, which can be exponentially more efficient, in terms of the required total pulse number, for fixed cancellation order, than known digital sequences based on concatenated design. Optimal sequences for a given cancellation order are highly non-unique—their performance depending sensitively on the control path. We provide an analytic upper bound to the achievable decoupling error and show how sequences within the optimal Walsh family can substantially outperform concatenated decoupling in principle, while respecting realistic timing constraints.  相似文献

Crystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) coatings have been widely used in photo-electrochemical solar cell applications. In this study, TiO2 and carbon-doped TiO2 coatings were deposited onto unheated titanium and silicon wafer substrates using a DC closed-field magnetron sputtering system. The resultant coatings had an amorphous structure and a post-deposition heat treatment is required to convert this amorphous structure into the photoactive crystalline phase(s) of TiO2. This study investigates the use of a microwave plasma heat treatment as a means of achieving this crystalline conversion. The treatment involved placing the sputtered coatings into a 2.45 GHz microwave-induced nitrogen plasma where they were heated to approximately 550 °C. It was observed that for treatment times as short as 1 min, the 0.25-μm thick coatings were converted into the anatase crystalline phase of TiO2. The coatings were further transformed into the rutile crystalline phase after treatments at higher temperatures. The doping of TiO2 with carbon was found to result in a reduction in this phase transformation temperature, with higher level of doping (up to 5.8% in this study) leading to lower anatase-to-rutile transition temperature. The photoactivity performance of both doped and un-doped coatings heat-treated using both furnace and microwave plasma was compared. The carbon-doped TiO2 exhibited a 29% increase in photocurrent density compared to that observed for the un-doped coating. Comparing carbon-doped coatings heat-treated using the furnace and microwave plasma, it was observed that the latter yielded a 19% increase in photocurrent density. This enhanced performance may be correlated to the differences in the coatings' surface morphology and band gap energy, both of which influence the coatings' photoabsorption efficiency.  相似文献

A finite-difference technique is used to compute exact solutions to the diffusion equation describing fission gas release from UO2 nuclear fuel during steady reactor operation. The resolution of gas atoms from grain-boundary bubbles is treated in two alternative ways, and the results of the parallel calculations compared. Predictions of gas release using simple analytical models are compared with the numerical results and are found in general to describe the process very accurately.  相似文献

The analysis of the element pattern in an array of waveguide elements on a cone is approached by systematically exploiting the geometrical symmetry of the structure. The method consists of decomposing the arbitrary array excitation into fundamental excitations (eigenexcitations) for which the solution of the electromagnetic problem is simpler than in the general case. Following Bailin and Silver, the fields external to the cone are represented as a superposition of modes TE and TM to the radial direction. For each eigenexcitation the fields in the waveguide elements are represented as a superposition of normal waveguide modes. The enforcement of the continuity of the electromagnetic fields at the conical interface provides complete information about the radiation from the elements and the reflection coefficients of the modes in the waveguide. The array element pattern is obtained by the superposition, with suitable weights, of the patterns of the eigenexcitations. The communication presents the computational procedures followed to evaluate with high speed and precision the roots of the Legendre functions necessary to represent the fields external to the conical structure. Numerical results for the realized element patterns of a particular conical array are presented in the final section.  相似文献
