The Konan groundwater basin of Kochi Prefecture, Japan, is experiencing freshwater shortages for the past few years, particularly during the winter season. The present study aimed at analyzing the problem and exploring increased groundwater withdrawals to meet burgeoning freshwater demands in various sectors. The trend analysis of waterconsumption indicates that the groundwater demandwould increase by 43 and 52% by the years 2010 and2025, respectively, compared to 32 100 m3 d-1 at present.The streamflow of the Monobe River reduces to a minimumin winter and it shows a decreasing trend in recentyears. The geologic investigation results indicatethat unconfined (phreatic) aquifers comprisingalluvial sand and gravel and/or diluvial silty sandand gravel are dominant, and that the northwestern andwestern portions of the basin have greater potentialfor groundwater. Groundwater flows essentially fromnorth to south into the ocean. Groundwater levelfluctuations over the basin vary appreciably in spaceand time, indicating a wide variation of naturalrecharge. Field observations confirm the hypothesisthat stream-aquifer interaction also significantlycontributes to groundwater recharge, besides therainfall infiltration. Further, the pumping testsresults demonstrate that though the aquifers arelow-yielding, enhanced groundwater withdrawals couldbe possible. The aquifer hydraulic conductivity ischaracterized as high and ranges from 65 to 804 m d-1(mean = 229 m d-1), thereby suggesting great aquiferheterogeneity. Finally, it is concluded that thelong-term sustainability of the scarce groundwaterresource of the Konan basin is doubtful, and that acomprehensive analysis of the groundwater system isessential prior to formulating plans for the futuregroundwater development and management.  相似文献

The effect of silicon ion implantation upon the corrosion resistance and structure of the surface layers formed during the implantation in the Ti6A14V titanium alloy was examined. The silicon doses were 0.5, 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 × 1017Si+/cm2, and the ion beam energy was 100 keV. The corrosion resistance of the samples exposed to a 0.9% NaCl solution at a temperature of 37 °C was measured using electrochemical methods. The structure of the surface layers formed during the implantation was examined by a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results of the corrosion resistance examinations have shown that the unimplanted and 0.5 × 1017Si+/cm2 implanted samples undergo uniform corrosion. At higher silicon doses, the samples show pitting corrosion. The highest corrosion resistance was shown by the alloy implanted with 0.5 × 1017Si+/cm2. It has been found that, after a long-term (1200 h) exposure to a 0.9% NaCl solution, the corrosion resistance of the samples is greater than that observed after a short-term exposure. TEM examinations have shown that, beginning from a dose of 1.5 × 1017Si+/cm2, the surface of the Ti6A14V alloy samples becomes amorphous. Heating of the 1.5 × 1017Si+/cm2 implanted samples at 200 and 500 °C does not change their structure, whereas after heating at 650 °C, the amorphous phase vanishes.  相似文献

In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial activity of essential oil vapors against histamine-producing bacteria Morganella morganii NBRC3848 and Raultella planticola NBRC3317. We measured the minimum inhibitory dose (MID) of 14 essential oils towards these two strains. Allyl isothiocyanate (AIT) and salicylaldehyde (SA) vapors showed higher antibacterial activity than the other 12 essential oil vapors. Both AIT and SA vapors suppressed growth of total aerobic bacteria and histamine-producing bacteria in bigeye tuna and mackerel meat during storage at 12°C. These vapors also inhibited histamine accumulation in bigeye tuna meat and mackerel meat. Thus, application of AIT and SA vapors is effective for preventing increase of histamine-producing bacteria and histamine formation in fish meat.  相似文献

Adequate and reliable parameters are key to the sustainable management of vital groundwater resources. Present study focuses on the evaluation of direct methods (tidal efficiency and time lag methods) and an extended tide–aquifer interaction technique for determining the hydraulic parameter of coastal unconfined and confined aquifer systems. The hydraulic diffusivities of unconfined and confined aquifer systems were estimated using the tidal efficiency and time lag methods as well as they were optimized using the tide–aquifer interaction model and the Levenberg–Marquardt optimization technique. The hydraulic diffusivities were optimized by the Levenberg–Marquardt technique following two approaches: lumped tidal component approach and multi-tidal component approach. The effect of spring and neap tidal data on parameter estimates was also analyzed. The tide–aquifer interaction data for two unconfined sites and three confined sites were used in this study. For all the five sites under study, the aquifer hydraulic diffusivities based on the time lag method were found to be much larger (2 to 14 fold for the unconfined sites and 5 to 8 fold for the confined sites) than those based on the tidal efficiency method. The analysis of the optimization results indicated that the hydraulic diffusivities following “multi-tidal component approach” are more reliable and accurate for both unconfined and confined aquifers than those obtained following “lumped tidal component approach”. Consequently, the use of “multi-tidal component approach” is strongly recommended for the determination of aquifer parameters by the tide–aquifer interaction technique. Furthermore, the tide–interaction data corresponding to spring and neap tidal events were found to significantly affect the aquifer diffusivities yielded by the tide–aquifer interaction technique. It is concluded that a judicious use of tide–aquifer interaction technique is indispensable for the reliable estimates of hydraulic parameters of coastal aquifer systems.  相似文献

A rapid increase in the need to explore the molecular basis of cellular function and injury in the central nervous system has led neuroscientists to employ transgenic mouse technology. The successful making of transgenic mice (Tg) overexpressing human CuZn-superoxide dismutase (SOD-1) activity has made it possible to investigate the role of oxygen free radicals in ischemic and traumatic brain injury in a molecular fashion. It has been demonstrated that the 3-fold increase in SOD-1 transgene activity in SOD-1 Tg mice offers protection against cerebral ischemia and reperfusion in two different models of focal cerebral ischemia, as compared to nontransgenic wild-type littermates. Studies involving traumatic brain injury have also demonstrated that acute injuries, including brain edema and blood-brain barrier permeability, are significantly reduced in SOD-1 Tg mice. Furthermore, chronic neurological deficits, such as beam walking, beam balance, and body weight, are significantly improved in these transgenic animals following traumatic brain injury. In addition to the SOD-1 Tg mice being a useful tool for the study of CNS injury, targeted disruption of the mouse gene for mitochondrial manganese SOD (SOD-2) has been successful. These SOD-2 knockout mutant mice, in addition to the recently developed knockout mutants of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS), are believed to offer a unique opportunity to elucidate the oxidative mechanisms in brain injury following stroke and trauma.  相似文献

We have investigated the control of halophilic histamine-producing bacteria, Photobacterium phosphoerum and Photobacterium damselae by using vapor of essential oils and other agents. Three of fourteen essential oils showed high antibacterial activity against histamine-producing bacteria. Among food additives and detergents, ten of twenty-one food additives and seven of nine detergents also showed antibacterial activity. Low concentrations of sodium chloride suppressed the growth of both species. We examined the resistance of these bacteria to dryness on food contact surfaces. After 0.5 hours, no viable cells were detected. So, the bacteria were sensitive to dry conditions. These results should contribute to development of the techniques to prevent histamine food poisoning.  相似文献

We investigated the antibacterial activity of food additives and detergents against histamine-producing bacteria on food contact material surfaces. Based on minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) testing with Morganella morganii NBRC3848, Raoultella planticola NBRC3317 and Enterobacter aerogenes NCTC10006, we screened nine food additives and four detergents with relatively high inhibitory potency. We prepared food contact material surfaces contaminated with histamine-producing bacteria, and dipped them into fourteen agents (100 μg/mL). Sodium hypochlorite, benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride, n-hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride and 1-n-hexadecylpyridinium chloride showed antibacterial activity against histamine-producing bacteria. We prepared low concentrations of the five agents (10 and 50 μg/mL) and tested them in the same way. Sodium hypochlorite showed high antibacterial activity at 10 μg/mL, and the other four showed activity at 50 μg/mL. So, washing the material surface with these reagents might be effective to prevent histamine food poisoning owing to bacterial contamination of food contact surfaces.  相似文献

The consequences of unsustainable use of groundwater are becoming increasingly evident worldwide, particularly in developing nations. Groundwater management is a serious problem in many parts of the world. The prime concern is how to achieve groundwater sustainability. Artificial recharge techniques coupled with water harvesting hold a great promise for groundwater sustainability. The main intent of this paper is to highlight salient cost-effective and easy-to-use methods for augmenting groundwater resources in the alluvial hydrogeologic setting. Based on the intensive field investigation in a groundwater basin of Japan, three low-cost and easy-to-implement recharge techniques are suggested for alluvial aquifer systems, viz., augmentation of river flow, recharge through irrigation/drainage canals, and recharge from paddy fields. The source of recharge water for these recharge techniques is surface water supply. The efficacy of these methods or approaches has been demonstrated. It is emphasized that such cost-effective methods of groundwater recharge are key to sustainable groundwater management in both developing and developed countries. These methods must not be overlooked in the midst of sophisticated and highly expensive methods.  相似文献

In 1991, this prospectively designed study was started to assess the potentials of positron emission tomography with 18FDG in the diagnostic workup for the detection of lymph node metastases in testicular cancer, since there were no data available concerning this subject at this time. In 54 patients (27 patients with pure seminoma, 27 patients with non-seminomatous tumors) 18FDG-PET results were compared with the findings obtained with abdominal computed tomography, serum level of tumor markers (AFP, beta-HCG), and the histopathological findings after primary or post-chemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissection. In 21 patients with pure seminoma (clinical stage I according to the Lugano classification) 18FDG-PET results were identical with those of the abdominal computed tomography, so PET does not add relevant informations in this group of patients. In 7 patients presenting with non-seminomatous testicular cancer (stage I), PET was not able to detect the existing micrometastases in 4 patients. In 1/7 case PET examination showed a suspicious focal lesion, this lymph node had 2 micrometastases within inflammatory changes. In 1/7 patient 18FDG-PET definitely revealed metastatic lesions, while the CT scans where judged to be unobtrusive and tumor marker levels were within the normal range. In the 4 patients with pure seminomas stage II B and II C (N = 6), that have undergone retroperitoneal lymph node dissection following chemotherapy, 18FDG-PET correctly predicted absence of tumor in 3 out of these 4, and in 1/4 patient the benign nature of a persistent large tumor after two cycles of polychemotherapy was correctly identified which eventually turned out to be a ganglioneuroma. This lesion falsely was classified as malignant tumor with abdominal computed tomography, and in 2/4 patients post-chemotherapy residual retroperitoneal lesions in the CT scans could not be assessed exactly whether or not malignant tumor was present. In 20 patients presenting with non-seminomatous testicular cancer (stage II and III) 18FDG-PET was able to demonstrate therapeutic effects of chemotherapy by showing decreasing tracer activity in those regions, that had hypermetabolic foci prior to chemotherapy. It became evident in testicular cancer that there is a single entity which is not characterized by increased glucose metabolism, the mature teratoma. In lesions detected by abdominal computed tomography which do not present increased 18FDG uptake, mature teratoma as well as scar/necrosis or rare other tumors with normal glucose metabolism can be supposed, but additional characteristics based on different 18FDG uptake were not observed. In 1/20 case post-chemotherapy PET scan detected a hypermetabolic lesion, which was suspicious for metastatic spread, but in the histopathological examination this lesion was identified as inflammatory tissue reaction. Based on the data reported here in 18FDG-PET cannot be considered a standard diagnostic tool in the staging examinations in testicular cancer. It is of clinical relevance in patients who present residual tumor after chemotherapy. In this situation 18FDG-PET is helpful in deciding whether or not a residual mass post-chemotherapy contains active tumor. 18FDG-PET can not replace retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for staging purposes.  相似文献
