Weathering of High-Density Polyethylene-Wood Plastic Composites

Due to the widespread use of wood-plastic composites (WPCs), high-density polyethylene-wood flour composites (HDPE/WF) were studied in order to determine their stability in different application conditions. UV degradation and periodic absorption/desorption of moisture cause damaging changes to material during WPCs’ exterior application, so it is necessary to ensure WPCs’ durability against atmospheric influences. Samples were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to study the degradation after simulated weathering. The degree of water absorption was also determined. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used for the determination of composites’ thermal properties. Results show that the stability of the HDPE/WF composites to UV treatment highly depends on stabilizer content and its dispersion in the polymer matrix. Incompatibility of HDPE and wood particles is a major problem that should be solved to achieve good durability and satisfying properties in use.     

Influence of condensed water on heat radiation absorptivity at cryogenic temperatures

Influence of water deposit on heat radiation absorptivity of a metallic surface was measured in a device designed for investigation of thermal radiative properties of materials at cryogenic temperatures. In this device heat transfer between planparallel surfaces of radiator and absorber is measured. An aluminium sample of 40 mm in diameter was used as absorber. A radiator consisting of an organic composite on a copper disk was used in two experiment stages. At temperature of 298 K, water outgassed from the organic layer formed the deposit on the absorber. Then the heat emitted from the radiator at temperatures from 45 K up to 250 K was used for the absorptivity measurement. Substantial influence of deposit of 85 mg/m² on the sample absorptivity was found.

Polyethylene/Polycaprolactone Nanocomposite Films for Food Packaging Modified with Magnetite and Casein: Oxygen Barrier,Mechanical, and Thermal Properties

Polyethylene (PE) was modified and prepared as double-layer polyethylene/polycaprolactone (PE/PCL) film. Magnetite and casein were added to the PCL-coating film to improve barrier properties and prevent destruction of basic structure of primary polymer PE. Significant improvements were observed with regards to mechanical (tensile strength, elongation at break) and thermal properties, while barrier (O₂ permeability) properties were slightly improved. Overall migration values into acetic acid were lower (from 1 to 4.6 mg/dm²) than the upper limit set by the legislation. Specific migration of iron in PE/PCL-Fe samples is also below (µg/L) specific migration limit value set by the legislation (mg/kg).     

Effect of delta-THC on ethanol withdrawal in mice

Delta-THC (10 mg/kg, i.p.) administered to mice immediately after withdrawal from a 3-day exposure to ethanol vapor was found to intensify withdrawal reactions. No effect was seen when delta-THC was administered chronically during the exposure to ethanol.
