Objective: Recent research has documented increased psychosocial difficulties in individuals who report higher-than-typical autistic traits but without an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Less is known, however, regarding the cognitive profile of individuals with subthreshold autism symptomatology. The objective of the present study was to provide additional insight into this issue and examine whether young adults who report higher degrees of autism traits also report experiencing increased difficulties with executive control. Method: The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function was utilized to evaluate behavioral aspects of executive functioning in 66 and 28 individuals who endorsed high and low subthreshold levels of autism symptomatology, respectively. Results: After accounting for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptomatology at both the group and individual participant levels, we found that autism traits continued to explain a significant amount of variance in participants' overall level of executive function (Global Executive Composite) as well as within most individual executive domains. Interestingly, the high and low trait groups did not differ on the inhibitory control and organization of materials scales, areas of functioning that appears to be largely spared in individuals with ASD as well. Conclusions: Findings from the present study are consistent with past research linking ASD and executive control impairment. In addition, ASD and ADHD traits were associated with unique contributions to the executive control profile of individuals with subthreshold autism symptomatology. Several models for interactions between trifluoroethanol (TFE)and peptides and proteins have recently been proposed, but nonehave been able to rationalize the puzzling observations thaton the one hand TFE can stabilize some hydrophobic interactionsin secondary structures, but on the other can also melt thehydrophobic cores of globular proteins. The former is illustratedin this paper by the effect of TFE on a short elastin peptide,GVG(VPGVG)3, which forms type II ß-turns stabilized byhydrophobic interactions between two intra-turn valine sidechains. This folding, driven by increasing the entropy of bulkwater, is stimulated in TFE–water mixtures and/or by raisingthe temperature. To explain these apparently contradictory observations,we propose a model in which TFE clusters locally assist thefolding of secondary structures by first breaking down interfacialwater molecules on the peptide and then providing a solventmatrix for further side chain–side chain interactions.This model also provides an explanation for TFE-induced transitionsbetween secondary structures, in which the TFE clusters mayredirect non-local to local interactions.  相似文献

Persistent organic pollutants in ringed seals from the Russian Arctic   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Organochlorine compounds total DDT (ΣDDT), total HCH isomers (ΣHCH), toxaphenes (sum of Parlar 26, 50, 62), mirex, endrin, methoxychlor, total chlorinated benzenes (ΣCBz), total chlordane compounds (ΣCHL), polychlorinated biphenyls (total of 56 congeners; ΣPCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (sum of 7 tri- to hepta congeners; ΣPBDEs) were analysed in the blubber of adult ringed seals from the four areas of the Russian Arctic (White Sea, Barents Sea, Kara Sea and Chukchi Sea) collected in 2001-2005. Ringed seals from the south-western part of the Kara Sea (Dikson Island — Yenisei estuary) were the most contaminated with ΣDDTs, ΣPCBs, ΣCHL, and mirex as compared with those found in the other three areas of Russian Arctic, while the highest mean concentrations of ΣHCHs and PCDD/Fs were found in the blubber of ringed seals from the Chukchi Sea and the White Sea, respectively. Among all organochlorine compounds measured in ringed seals from the European part of the Russian Arctic, concentrations of ΣDDT and ΣPCBs only were higher as compared with the other Arctic regions. Levels of all other organochlorine compounds were similar or lower than in seals from Svalbard, Alaska, the Canadian Arctic and Greenland. ΣPBDEs were found in all ringed seal samples analysed. There were no significant differences between ΣPBDE concentrations found in the blubber of ringed seals from the three studied areas of the European part of the Russian Arctic, while PBDE contamination level in ringed seals from the Chukchi Sea was 30-50 times lower. ΣPBDE levels in the blubber of seals from the European part of the Russian Arctic are slightly higher than in ringed seals from the Canadian Arctic, Alaska, and western Greenland but lower compared to ringed seals from Svalbard and eastern Greenland.  相似文献

ITER (Latin for “the way”), the largest fusion experimental reactor in the world, is designed to demonstrate the technological feasibility of nuclear fusion energy conversion, at plant scale, from high temperature deuterium-tritium plasma using the Tokamak magnetic confinement arrangement.ITER will have a large vacuum vessel that hosts the plasma facing components. These components include the blanket and the divertor that will operate at temperatures, heat loads, and neutron flux higher than those reached in a nuclear fission power plant reactor.One of the main critical issues of the ITER reactor is the design of the cooling water system to transfer the heat generated in the plasma to the in-vessel components and the heat loads from the auxiliary systems to the environment.This paper describes the current ITER cooling water system and recent design modifications and optimizations.  相似文献

In total, 215 commercially processed broiler carcasses were examined to determine optimum cultural enumeration, the effects of freezing, method of thawing, and duration of frozen storage on levels of Campylobacter spp. and fecal coliforms. Enumeration studies compared MPN procedures to direct plating onto selective mCCDA agar and indicated equivalency for quantitation of Campylobacter spp. Levels of Campylobacter and fecal coliforms were subsequently estimated by direct plating of carcass rinses. Freezing of naturally contaminated carcasses followed by storage at -20 degrees C for 31, 73, 122 and 220 days showed statistically significant (P< or =0.05) reductions in Campylobacter counts initially as compared with counts found on fresh product. Among 5 lots of broilers, levels of Campylobacter on carcasses were reduced by log mean values ranging from 0.65 to 2.87 after freezing and 31 days of storage. Similar reductions due to freezing were not observed for fecal coliforms counts. The level of Campylobacter was reduced by approximately one log immediately after freezing, and remained relatively constant during the 31-220 days of frozen storage. The levels were constant during 7 days of refrigerated storage. After 31 days of frozen storage there was a reduced rate in reduction of counts among broilers thawed at 7 degrees C as compared to thawing at 22 degrees C with either cultural method (MPN and mCCDA). These findings warrant consideration of the public health benefits related to freezing contaminated poultry prior to commercial distribution to reduce Campylobacter exposure levels associated with contaminated carcasses.  相似文献
