Lethal and teratogenic potentials of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) in their amorphous form were investigated by the standardized Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus (FETAX), a 96-h in vitro whole-embryo toxicity test based on the amphibian Xenopus laevis. Embryos were acutely exposed to 1, 10, 100 and 500 mg/L CNP suspensions and evaluated for lethality, malformations and growth inhibition. Larvae were processed for histological and ultrastructural analyses to detect the main affected organs, to look for specific lesions at the subcellular level and to image and track CNPs into tissues. Only the highest CNP suspension resulted in being embryolethal for X. laevis larvae, while malformed larva percentages significantly differed from controls starting from 100 mg/L. The stomach and gut were the preferential CNP accumulation sites, on the contrary, the digestive epithelium remained intact. The analyses showed the presence of isolated nanoparticles and/or aggregates in different secondary target organs. CNPs were found in circulating erythrocytes. The research confirms the good tolerance of X. laevis towards pure elemental carbon in its nanoparticulate amorphous form, but highlights the possibility of CNP transfer toward all body areas.  相似文献

Background

It is estimated that over 80% of respirable particulate matter (PM10) in cities comes from road transport and that tire and brake wear are responsible for the 3–7% emission of it. Data on the indicators of environmental impact of tire debris (TD), originated from the tire abrasion on roads, are extremely scarce, even though TD contains chemicals (zinc and organic compounds) which can be released in the environment.  相似文献

Mono-varietal extra virgin olive oils were micro-extracted from drupes that were selectively collected from 28 trees distributed in five different Southern Italian Apulian areas. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) profiles of these oil samples were correlated to the genetic (young green material) and soil (samples collected within the foliage projection) data of the tree of origin. Genetic analysis, performed on the samples using SSRs (Simple Sequence Repeats) by 9 microsatellite loci, confirmed the specific cultivar assignment (among Cima di Mola, Coratina, Ogliarola, and Oliva Rossa cultivars). Chemometric methods applied to 1H-NMR spectroscopic data were used for cultivar and geographical origin discrimination of the studied extra virgin olive oils. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) afforded a high reliability degree for discriminating cultivars (almost 90% of prediction ability), and a good assigning ability for the geographical origin (Ogliarola and Coratina samples used as subsets). Soil analyses were performed for each tree. Regression analysis was applied to soil composition in order to correlate available nutrients and total metals with the content of fatty acids and minor components present in monovarietal extra virgin olive oils. In the case of oleic and linoleic fatty acids, and for some terpenes, B, Cr, Mn, Zn were found to give significant correlations. Zn and Mn were the most significant trace elements for all the correlations found (p < 0.01). The results obtained (genetic, spectroscopic and soil analyses) are discussed as a multidisciplinary approach for setting up a strategy for a cultivar and/or geographic origin certification committed database construction.  相似文献

In the last few years the possible role of accelerator driver systems (ADS) for effective transmutation strategies with fully closed cycles has received increased attention due to their potential to improve the flexibility and safety characteristics of transmutation systems. The substantial difference between the neutron kinetics and dynamic behavior of ADS and conventional critical reactors has given rise to a wide international consensus on the need of an experimental program to improve their knowledge and to validate calculation methods. To this end the international cooperation TRADE proposed a sub-critical experiment based on the coupling of a TRIGA reactor in sub-critical core configuration with a proton accelerator (cyclotron) by means of a neutron spallation target. The experiment was initially conceived in the RC1-TRIGA reactor located at the ENEA Center of CASACCIA (Rome, Italy) to demonstrate the feasibility of the accelerator driven system (ADS) concept at a representative power. This article presents a preliminary study performed with the RELAP5/PARCS code on the dynamic behavior of such a system in order to demonstrate the code capability to support the design of the experiment and the safety analysis. The specific code version used joins the well known capability of RELAP5 to treat light water reactors with the potentiality of PARCS modified by ENEA to simulate the three-dimensional neutronics of sub-critical systems, i.e. to treat external neutron sources. PARCS modifications are preliminary assessed against a simple analytical solution of the sub-critical neutronics of the experiment based on the kinetics pseudo-potentials method. A quite detailed model for the coupled code is developed in order to realistically evaluate both the thermal feedback effects, the control rod action and the external source strength changes. A wide range of operational and accidental transients of the sub-critical reactor are simulated with the coupled model in order to obtain a first system response to a number of reactor elementary events at different subcriticality levels. The calculation results show a high qualitative agreement with the sub-critical system physical theory underlining how the numerical model developed could be a useful tool for the definition of the operational procedures and the investigation of accidental conditions; moreover the accidental transient trends highlight the inherent safety behavior of the TRIGA research reactors that makes them extremely suitable for the coupling of the different components with a quite simple licensing procedures.  相似文献

The intensified attention to health, the growth of an elderly population, the changing lifestyles, and the medical discoveries have increased demand for natural and nutrient-rich foods, shaping the popularity of microalgae products. Microalgae thanks to their metabolic versatility represent a promising solution for a ‘green’ economy, exploiting non-arable land, non-potable water, capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and solar energy. The interest in microalgae is justified by their high content of bioactive molecules, such as amino acids, peptides, proteins, carbohydrates, polysaccharides, polyunsaturated fatty acids (as ω-3 fatty acids), pigments (as β-carotene, astaxanthin, fucoxanthin, phycocyanin, zeaxanthin and lutein), or mineral elements. Such molecules are of interest for human and animal nutrition, cosmetic and biofuel production, for which microalgae are potential renewable sources. Microalgae, also, represent effective biological systems for treating a variety of wastewaters and can be used as a CO2 mitigation approach, helping to combat greenhouse gases and global warming emergencies. Recently a growing interest has focused on extremophilic microalgae species, which are easier to cultivate axenically and represent good candidates for open pond cultivation. In some cases, the cultivation and/or harvesting systems are still immature, but novel techniques appear as promising solutions to overcome such barriers. This review provides an overview on the actual microalgae cultivation systems and the current state of their biotechnological applications to obtain high value compounds or ingredients. Moreover, potential and future research opportunities for environment, human and animal benefits are pointed out. © 2023 The Authors. It is widely recognized that urban development alters infiltration capacity and enhances its spatial variability, but also constrains watercourses into narrow channels making them unable to contain the runoff that is generated by relatively small, but intense, rainfall events. Network of detention basins are designed to reduce the flood peak by temporarily storing the excess storm water and then releasing the water volume at allowable rates over an extended period. This paper shows the use of a distributed hydrological model for the assessment of effectiveness of a network of detention facilities in a heavily urbanized river basin. The distributed hydrological model FEST was used to assess design hydrograph and, in parallel to design the seven detention basins optimized for the specific purpose of maintaining the flow rate within the range of the maximum allowable discharge. This permitted to estimate the design hydrograph considering both the spatial variability of soil infiltration capacity and routing characteristics induced by each detention basins along the main river. Results indicate that on-stream detention ponds can increase duration of the critical event and runoff volume of design flood with possible negative implications on downstream facilities.  相似文献

The PERSEO experimental program was performed in the framework of a domestic research program on innovative safety systems with the purpose to increase the reliability of passive decay heat removal systems implementing in-pool heat exchangers. The conceived system was tested at SIET laboratories by modifying the existing PANTHERS IC-PCC facility utilized in the past for testing a full scale module of the GE-SBWR in-pool heat exchanger. Integral tests and stability tests were conducted to verify the operating principles, the steadiness and the effectiveness of the system. Two of the more representative tests have been analyzed with CATHARE V2.5 for code validation purposes. The paper deals with the comparison of code results against experimental data. The capabilities and the limits of the code in simulating such kind of tests are highlighted. An improvement in the modeling of the large water reserve pool is suggested trying to reduce the discrepancies observed between code results and test measurements.  相似文献

Embryotoxic effects of Carbaryl (CB), a widely used carbamate insecticide, was evaluated by modified Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus (FETAX), coupled with a histopathological screening of the survived larvae. X. laevis embryos were exposed to 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 24 mg/L CB from stage 8 to stage 47. From an estimated LC50 of 20.28 mg/L and TC50 of 8.43 mg/L a TI of 2.41 was derived, indicating that CB is to be considered teratogenic for X. laevis embryos. The most characteristic terata, classified as abnormal tail flexure, involved a significant percentage of larvae from 1 mg/L CB onward, reaching 100% at 24 mg/L CB. Histopathological screening revealed tail musculature and notochord as the main targets for CB. Skeletal muscle lesions consisted of myotomes reduced in size, showing myocytes with disorganized contractile systems and irregular myosepta, coupled with disarranged myocyte apexes. Notochords from CB exposed larvae appeared wavy or bent, with irregular connective sheaths and histologically characterized by protrusions of fibrous matrix and inclusions of ectopic cell masses. This axial-skeletal damage was hypothesized to be related both to the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, with consequent muscular tetanic spasms, and to disorders in the organization of the connective tissue matrix surrounding the notochord.  相似文献
