Abstract: This article combines the neighborhood effects and spatial mismatch frameworks into a single model explaining how geographic factors contribute to unemployment. Using National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (1979) data, I estimate a two‐step model that separately models the effects of segregation and spatial mismatch. The first model predicts educational attainment as a function of exposure to residential segregation as a youth. The second model predicts unemployment probability as an adult as a function of educational attainment and spatial mismatch. The empirical results show that segregation does have discernable effects on educational attainment for blacks, but not for whites. I also find that spatial mismatch affects unemployment probability for blacks, but such an effect is hardly present for whites. A partial equilibrium analysis using predictions from the models shows that large changes in either segregation levels or the central city/suburban distribution of the black population would yield only moderate decreases in unemployment probability for the black population overall. Yet despite small predicted effects, these results should be viewed with caution because the general equilibrium effects of a large scale movement of blacks and whites across metropolitan space are largely impossible to predict with current data.  相似文献

Operational retrieval of cloud-top heights using MISR data   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Due to its unique nine-angle configuration, the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) can retrieve cloud parameters such as cloud-motion vectors and cloud-top heights using a purely geometrical technique that involves locating the same cloud features at different viewing angles. The geometrical nature of this technique means that the retrievals are relatively insensitive to the absolute instrument calibration. Fast stereo-matching algorithms have been developed to perform this image matching automatically on an operational basis. Preliminary results are shown of the operational retrievals together with comparisons against other data. Cloud-top height is generally obtained on a 1.1-km grid with an accuracy of /spl plusmn/ 562 m, even over snow and ice. The limitations of the technique, resulting at times in height blunders, noisy retrievals, and discrete effects of wind correction, are discussed.  相似文献

There exist a number of mathematical procedures for designing discrete-time compensators. However, the digital implementation of these designs, with a microprocessor, for example, has not received nearly as thorough an investigation. The finite-precision nature of the digital hardware makes it necessary to choose a computational structure that will perform adequately with regard to the initial objectives of the design. This paper describes a procedure for estimating the required fixed-point coefficient wordlength for any given computational structure for the implementation of a single-input single-output LQG design. Although the temporal characteristics of neural responses have been proposed as a mechanism for sensory neural coding, there has been little evidence thus far that this type of information is actually used by the nervous system. Here the authors show that patterned electrical pulses trains that mimic the response to the taste of quinine can produce a bitterlike sensation when delivered to the nucleus tractus solitarius of behaving rats. Following conditioned aversion training using either "quinine simulation" patterns of electrical stimulation or natural quinine (0.1 mM) as a conditioned stimulus, rats specifically generalized the aversion to 2 bitter tastants: quinine and urea. Randomization of the quinine simulation patterns resulted in generalization patterns that resembled those to a perithreshold concentration (0.01 mM) of quinine. These data provide strong evidence that the temporal pattern of brainstem activity may convey information about taste quality and underscore the functional significance of temporal coding. We developed a nested, multiplex PCR for simultaneous detection of three species of chlamydiae in human and avian specimens. The PCR was designed to increase sensitivity and to circumvent inhibitors of PCR present in clinical specimens. The target sequence was the 16S rRNA gene. The first-step PCR was genus specific, and the second-step PCR was multiplexed (i.e., had multiple primer sets in the same tube) and could discriminate among Chlamydia pneumoniae, Chlamydia psittaci, and Chlamydia trachomatis on the basis of the molecular weight of the amplicon. The limit of detection of each of the two PCR steps was 5 inclusion-forming units. We used PCR and serologic evidence during outbreaks of psittacosis to infer that C. psittaci had been transmitted from birds purchased in pet stores to humans. We also used this method to test both live and dead birds from pet stores for infection with C. psittaci. Compared with culture, the application of PCR to avian specimens increased the rate of C. psittaci detection.  相似文献

The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument, launched in December 1999 on the NASA EOS Terra satellite, produces images in the red band at 275-m resolution, over a swath width of 360 km, for the nine camera angles 70.5/spl deg/, 60/spl deg/, 45.6/spl deg/, and 26.1/spl deg/ forward, nadir, and 26.1/spl deg/, 45.6/spl deg/, 60/spl deg/, and 70.5/spl deg/ aft. A set of accurate and fast algorithms was developed for automated stereo matching of cloud features to obtain cloud-top height and motion over the nominal six-year lifetime of the mission. Accuracy and speed requirements necessitated the use of a combination of area-based and feature-based stereo-matchers with only pixel-level acuity. Feature-based techniques are used for cloud motion retrieval with the off-nadir MISR camera views, and the motion is then used to provide a correction to the disparities used to measure cloud-top heights which are derived from the innermost three cameras. Intercomparison with a previously developed "superstereo" matcher shows that the results are very comparable in accuracy with much greater coverage and at ten times the speed. Intercomparison of feature-based and area-based techniques shows that the feature-based techniques are comparable in accuracy at a factor of eight times the speed. An assessment of the accuracy of the area-based matcher for cloud-free scenes demonstrates the accuracy and completeness of the stereo-matcher. This trade-off has resulted in the loss of a reliable quality metric to predict accuracy and a slightly high blunder rate. Examples are shown of the application of the MISR stereo-matchers on several difficult scenes which demonstrate the efficacy of the matching approach.  相似文献
