The Antibacterial Drug Candidate SBC3 is a Potent Inhibitor of Bacterial Thioredoxin Reductase

Antibiotic resistance is a growing problem for public health and associated with increasing economic costs and mortality rates. Silver and silver-related compounds have been used for centuries due to their antimicrobial properties. In this work, we show that 1,3-dibenzyl-4,5-diphenyl-imidazol-2-ylidene silver(I) acetate/NHC*-Ag-OAc (SBC3) is a reversible, high affinity inhibitor of E. coli thioredoxin reductase (TrxR; K_i=10.8±1.2 nM). Minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) tests with different E. coli and P. aeruginosa strains demonstrated that SBC3 can efficiently inhibit bacterial cell growth, especially in combination with established antibiotics like gentamicin. Our results show that SBC3 is a promising antibiotic drug candidate targeting bacterial TrxR.

Applying nursing theory to perioperative nursing practice

The perioperative nursing role has evolved from that of task-oriented specialists to patient-centered professionals. The concept of caring is significant to perioperative nurses and is manifested by the many caring behaviors perioperative nurses demonstrate toward surgical patients. This article describes how the element of caring is an essential function of perioperative nursing and relates the perioperative nursing role to the work of three nursing theorists (le, Florence Nightingale; Virginia Henderson, RN, AM; Carol L. Montgomery, RN, PhD).     

Accuracy in perceptions of interpersonal interactions: Effects of dysphoria, friendship, and similarity.

Addressed conflicting views of depressives' interpersonal accuracy in an investigation of the accuracy of mild depressives (dysphorics) across differing social contexts. Women who were either friends or strangers and who were either similar or dissimilar in level of dysphoria conversed about 3 topics: a neutral topic, their own disclosure of a personal problem, and their partner's disclosure. Dysphorics were not more accurate in general than nondysphorics. After self-disclosure, all women more accurately detected sympathy from a similar stranger. After the partner's disclosure, women also better detected the mood of a similar partner. When interacting with nondysphoric strangers, however, dysphorics underestimated their partner's sympathy toward them. Elevation of serum cholesterol levels in mice by the antioxidant butylated hydroxyanisole

The food antioxidants butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are structurally related to the hypocholesterolemic drug probucol. The purpose of this study was to determine if BHA can lower serum cholesterol levels as is observed with probucol. Treatment of mice with 0.75% BHA in their feed for 10 days resulted in a significant (P < or = 0.01) elevation of serum cholesterol levels. This effect contrasts with the cholesterol-lowering effect of probucol. Further, the degree of cholesterol elevation was comparable to that observed in mice administered 3% cholesterol in their feed for 7 days. The enzyme acyl CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) was decreased significantly (P < or = 0.01) in liver microsomes from BHA-treated mice. In contrast, hepatic microsomal ACAT activity was increased significantly (P < or = 0.01) in cholesterol-fed mice. These results suggested that the increased serum cholesterol observed in BHA-treated mice was not accompanied by an increase in hepatic cholesterol levels. Indeed, hepatic microsomal cholesterol levels were reduced in BHA-treated mice, but were increased significantly (P < or = 0.01) in cholesterol-fed mice. These results demonstrate that the common food additive BHA elevates serum cholesterol levels by a mechanism that apparently involves the decreased uptake of cholesterol by the liver.     

Dynamic averaging and foraging decisions in horses (Equus callabus).

The variability of most environments taxes foraging decisions by increasing the uncertainty of the information available. One solution to the problem is to use dynamic averaging, as do some granivores and carnivores. Arguably, the same strategy could be useful for grazing herbivores, even though their food renews and is more homogeneously distributed. Horses (Equus callabus) were given choices between variable patches after short or long delays. When patch information was current, horses returned to the patch that was recently best, whereas those without current information matched choices to the long-term average values of the patches. These results demonstrate that a grazing species uses dynamic averaging and indicate that, like granivores and carnivores, they can use temporal weighting to optimize foraging decisions. Adult rats stressed as neonates show exaggerated behavioral responses to both pharmacological and environmental challenges.

Adult rats that were isolated from the mother and nest for 1 hr per day from Postnatal Day 2 to 9 were studied. Controls consisted of handled littermates as well as separate litters that were never handled. As adults, animals were given either a pharmacological challenge (1.0 or 2.0 mg/kg amphetamine) or an environmental challenge (restraint). Previously isolated animals demonstrated increased activity compared to controls at both drug doses. Similarly, isolated animals manifested exaggerated inhibition of activity after restraint. Previously isolated animals usually did not show differences compared to controls under baseline conditions (saline injection or no restraint). The neuroplastic changes that result from the neonatal experience are long lasting and appear when the system is challenged. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

An infra-red study of model compounds of poly(tetramethylene terephthalate)

An infra-red spectroscopic investigation of the poly(tetramethylene terephthalate) model compounds butyl-dibenzoate: C₆H₅COO(CH₂)₄OCOC₆H₅ (i), 1,4-bis-butyl terephthalate: HO(CH₂)₄-OCO₆H₄COO(CH₂)₄-OH (ii), α-butyl-ω-butoxyterephthalaoyl-di-(tetramethylene terephthalate): H(CH₂)₄(OCOC₆H₄COO-(CH₂)₄-)₃-OH (iii), and α-butyl-ω-butoxyterephthalaoyl-tetra-(tetra-methylene terephthalate): HO(CH₂)₄-(OCOC₆H₄COO(CH₂)₄-)₅-OH (iv) is presented. The synthesis of (i) is also described. Spectroscopic evidence indicates that the crystal conformations of the aliphatic segments in (i) and (ii) closely resemble the extended all trans beta form of PTMT. Oligomers (iii) and (iv), however, are found to be more similar to the crumpled alpha crystal phase of PTMT.
