Classification of Structure Vulnerability and Evaluation of Earthquake Damage From Future Earthquakes

In this paper,three problems are studied and their results are presented as follows:(1)classification of seismic vulnerability for existing buildings,(2)dynamic earthquake damage matrix analysis method of buildings,and(3)earthquake damage matrix of building in the year 2000.

Intelligence-Aided Seismic Zonation System IASHES

In this paper,the structure of the intelligence-aided seismic zonation system IASHES and its validation are briefly introduced.Emphasis is placed on the two rank scheme of potential seismic source areas; an expert subsystem for estimating the seismicity trends of rank A source areas; an expert subsystem for delineation of rank B source areas; an expert subsystem for judgment of upper limit of magnitude of rank B source areas,and an improved procedure for determination of weighting factors of rank B source areas,which is specially suitable to ES(Expert systems).     

Investigation on the Load/Unload Response Ratio With Coda Q-1 as Response

The load/unload response ratio YQ with the geophysical parameter coda Q-1 of the crust as response is denned in this study.The variation in YQ-1 before and after the Northridge earthquake of January 17,1994(California)has been investigated by using the data of coda Q-1 with frequencies of 1.5,3.0,6.0,12.0,and 24.0 Hz in the Southern California from 1987 to 1994.It can be found that YQ-1 for coda waves with all frequencies,the frequency of 12.0 Hz excluded,ascended to a certain extent prior to the occurrence of the rnainshock and returned to normality after the main shock.     

The Temporal Variation of LURR in Kanto and Other Regions in Japan and Its Application to Earthquake Prediction

The temporal variation of LURR(y)for Kanto,Wakayama,and Hugo regions in Japan has been calculated and analysed.The LURR(y)values are significantly higher than 1 before the occurrence of all earthquakes with magnitude M≥6.0 in the Kanto region during the last two decades and the Kobe earthquake(1995-01-17).These results suggest that LURR theory is available for Japan.Recently they-value for Wakayama region has been near 1,while the y-value is remarkably larger than 1 for nearly two years for Kanto.According to these results,it is predicted that a strong earthquake with magnitude of about 6.0 could occur in 1 year or a little longer for in Kanto region or its adjacent regions,but there is little possibility for the Wakayama region.     

Some Fundamental Problems of Geodynamics and Application of Earth Observations by Space-Based Measurements

Although great-progress has been made in the earth sciences,some fundamental problems of geodynamics remain unsolved.They are concerned with the whole earth as well as regional tectonics,such as the west Pacific and Qinghai-Xizhang plateau.The new generation of earth observation by space-based measurement will contribute to solving these problems of geodynamics.In this regard,some specific plans about application of these techniques are suggested in this paper.     

Geodynamic Technique Applied to the Volcanic Activity Forecast of Lanzarote Island in Spain

In accordance with the Agreement of Sino-Spain Science and Technology Cooperation,the Institute of Seismology,SSB of China and the Institute of Astronomy and Geodesy of Spain have together performed research at the Geodynamics Laboratory of Lanzarote(Canary Islands)with geodynamic instrumentation.Researchers conducted observation and then analyzed the data compiled.Researchers using the advanced geodynamic instruments could monitor the volcanic activity and seismicity in order to forecast the volcanic eruption and earthquakes.The results of this paper are obtained from this scientific and technological cooperation of the two institutes between China and Spain.     

Preliminary Study on Paleoearthquake Chronology on the Northern Liulengshan Piedmont Fault in Yangyuan, Hebei Province, China

The northern Liulengshan piedmont fault is located along the southern margin of the Yangyuan basin and represents a dip-slip normal fault,generally NEE-trending and NNW-dipping.Landforms offset by the fault are fairly developed and well preserved in the Dushanpu area of Yangyuan County,Hebei Province.Two trenches were excavated in front of a scarp of the northern Liulengshan piedmont fault at Dushanpu and two paleoseismic events were revealed in the trenches,from which several samples were collected for dating.The samples were dated using the IRSL dating technique.The preliminary result shows the possible ages of the two paleoseismic events.     

利用近代微震资料研究地震危险性
