Hydrogen photocatalytic production from the self-assembled films of PAH/PAA/TiO2 supported on bacterial cellulose membranes

The issues related to renewable energy sources is a matter of great worldwide appeal due to the increasing energy demand, instability in oil prices and environmental problems. In this context, the purpose of this study was to prepare self-assembled films of polyallylamine hydrochloride and poly (acrylic acid) supported onto bacterial cellulose membranes by a layer-by-layer approach with titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles and different concentrations of gold for application in hydrogen gas (H₂) production by photocatalysis. The influence of the gold concentration and the presence and size of the gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), as well as the surface and thickness of the films on H₂ production was investigated. The results showed that the film, prepared with a lower concentration of gold, presented the smallest Au NPs and, therefore, greater contact with the TiO₂ nanoparticle surfaces, producing more H₂. By analyzing the variation in all the experimental parameters used in the preparation of the films, it can be concluded that the best H₂ production achieved was 29.12 μmol h^?1 cm².     

The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Na0.9Mg0.45Ti3.55O8 co‐loaded with silver and platinum

Noble metals Ag and Pt were loaded on Na_0.9Mg_0.45Ti_3.55O₈ (NMTO) by chemical bath deposition method, which was synthesized firstly in our recent work. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy results show that Ag and Pt nanoparticles were distributed on the different surfaces of NMTO. NMTO loaded with Ag and Pt can efficiently enhance the separation of photogenerated electron‐hole pairs, exhibiting much higher photodegradative ability for methylene blue and rhodamine B than the pure NMTO. The best weight concentrations of Ag and Pt are 9.00% and 3.70%, respectively. The electrostatic field is built in the Schottky barrier between NMTO and noble metals, leading to the energy band bending. Then, photogenerated electrons and holes are efficiently separated to enhance the photocatalytic activity.     

Preparation of Bioactive Mesoporous Calcium Phosphate Granules

Mesoporous calcium phosphate granules ranging in mesopore size from 11 to 19 nm have been prepared using cryogenic processing (–18°C) of gels and extrusion of calcium phosphate paste. The granules based on acid calcium phosphates have a relatively small specific surface area (45 m²/g) in comparison with the neutral and basic calcium phosphates (84–155 m²/g). Preclinical in vivo trials on rats show that the presence of calcium phosphate granules in a bone defect considerably accelerates reparative osteogenesis in comparison with a control group of animals.

Malfunctioning of Microcontroller Irradiated with Ultrashort Ultrabroadband Pulse Trains

Effect of the number of ultrashort ultrabroadband pulses with a repetition rate of 1 kHz on malfunctioning of microcontroller in radio transparent housing is studied when the device is irradiated using pulse trains at a pulse duration of about 10^–10 s and radiation frequencies ranging from 1 to 30 GHz. The radiation is received by internal conducting stripes that connect the electronic circuit and external outputs. The malfunction probability is determined by the number of pulses in the pulse train, pulse number, and electric field strength. It is shown that malfunctioning is predominantly caused by the leading pulses in the pulse train.     

Landscape dynamics of Mediterranean montane grasslands over 60 years and implications for habitats conservation. A case study in the northern Apennines (Italy)

Widespread trends of abandonment have strongly affected Mediterranean mountains after the Second World War, triggering spontaneous recolonisation of forests. A diachronic analysis of the landscape in a Natura 2000 site (Tuscany, Italy) was carried out using digital aerial photographs (1954, 2013) and a GIS-based methodology, focusing on territories above 1300 m a.s.l. The detected variations of total areas, patch shape, patch dimensions and selected metrics showed a notable shift of the vegetation towards woody types and a drastic reduction of open grasslands, some with high conservation value, accompanied by a strong increase in patch number, surface and edge. A decrease of SDI and SEI diversity indices was also observed. Considering that fragmentation is one of the main causes threatening habitats and species, our results point out a clear necessity for a monitoring programme and suitable actions aimed at improving the status of biodiversity-rich montane grasslands.
