The Award for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy presented to Charles A. Kiesler is conferred upon a psychologist who has made a distinguished empirical and~or theoretical contribution to research in public policy, either through a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of work. This contribution may consist of such factors as research leading others to view specific national policies differently, research demonstrating the importance of the application of psychological methods and theory to public policy, and research clarifying the ways scientific knowledge of human behavior informs public policy. Charles D. Spielberger.

As author, coauthor, or editor of more than 300 publications, Spielberger has advanced the theoretical and empirical foundations of professional psychology through his research on personality and learning; stress and emotion; assessment of anxiety, anger, and curiosity; and lifestyle factors that influence the etiology of hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, and cancer. Charles G. Matthews.

Recognized as one of the foremost clinical neuropsychologists in the world, as evidenced by his election to the presidency of the International Neurological Society and to the presidency of American Psychological Association's Division 40, Charles G. Matthews has made outstanding contributions as an educator. He developed and has directed the foremost postdoctoral training program in clinical neuropsychology in the world and has established standards for the training of clinical neuropsychologists. He has also served as a member of the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology since its inception in 1981 and has been one of its examiners for the same period of time. Obituary: Charles B. Ferster (1922-1981).

Presents an obituary for Charles B. Ferster (1922-1981), a pioneering figure in the functional analysis of behavior. Ferster was the moving spirit in founding the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, a hastily improvised publication that soon became a leading journal in the field, and he served as its first editor. In a pioneering project with M. K. DeMyer, he showed that the behavior of autistic children, hitherto supposed to be virtually unmodifiable, could effectively be reinforced with tokens which the children could use to operate a variety of amusement devices and vending machines. Their project opened the door to direct therapeutic intervention with this diagnostic group and to the use of tokens to alter the behavior of institutional populations. In the last years of Ferster's life, his main interest was in studying the concrete details of a variety of psychotherapeutic procedures and specifying their nature in behavioral terms.
