A non-Newtonian rheological model to investigate theoretically the effects of lubricant additives on the steady state performance of hydrodynamically lubricated finite journal bearings is introduced. In this model, the non-Newtonian behavior resulting from blending the lubricant with polymer additives is simulated by Stokes couple stress fluid model. The formed boundary layer at the bearing surface is described through the use of a hypothetical porous medium layer that adheres to the bearing surface. The Brinkman-extended Darcy equations are utilized to model the flow in the porous region. A stress jump boundary condition is applied at the porous media/fluid film interface. A modified form of the Reynolds equation is derived and solved numerically using a finite difference scheme. The effects of bearing geometry, and non-Newtonian behavior of the lubricant on the steady-state performance characteristics such as pressure distribution, load carrying capacity, side leakage flow, and coefficient of friction are presented and discussed. The results showed that lubricant additives significantly increase the load carrying capacity and reduce both the coefficient of friction and the side leakage as compared to the Newtonian lubricants. 相似文献

In this paper, a method based on the finite element vibration analysis is presented for defect detection in rolling element bearings with single or multiple defects on different components of the bearing structure using the time and frequency domain parameters. A dynamic loading model is proposed in order to create the nodal excitation functions used in the finite element vibration analysis as external loading. A computer code written in Visual Basic programming language with a graphical user interface is developed to create the nodal excitations for different cases including the outer ring, inner ring or rolling element defects. Forced vibration analysis of a bearing structure is performed using the commercial finite element package I-DEAS under the action of an unbalanced force transferred to the structure via a ball bearing. Time and frequency domain parameters such as rms, crest factor, kurtosis and band energy ratio for the frequency spectrum of the enveloped signals are used to analyse the effect of the defect location and the number of defects on the time and frequency domain parameters. The role of the receiving point for vibration measurements is also investigated. The vibration data for various defect cases including the housing structure effect can be obtained using the finite element vibration analysis in order to develop an optimum monitoring method in condition monitoring studies. 相似文献

This paper presents an innovative and cost-effective scheme for examining on line the degree of misalignment of a pair of linear guideway rails in a feed drive system. Prototype MEMS-based vibration detection modules were constructed and installed on the ball screw nut and linear guideway block. The ball screw preload was adjusted with four settings by changing ball sizes in this feed drive system. For each preload setting, a linear guideway rail was adjusted using feeler gauges to produce 11 misalignment statuses. The y-axis deviation caused by misalignment along the feed direction (x-axis) was measured with a dial gauge. For each preload and misalignment setting, the vibration signal was ascertained from the installed detection modules while the work table was driven by the controller. By analyzing the vibration signals from the detection module on the linear guideway block, we found that the characteristic frequency in a specific spectrum band could be used as a misalignment index. The characteristic frequencies exhibited a descending trend when the deviation was less than 40 μm and an increasing trend when the deviation was 40–120 μm. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of using cost-effective sensing units to examine the parallelism or distinguish the deviation between the linear guideway rails without disassembling the work table. The present paper deals with the theoretical investigation of the influence of dimple geometry on fully textured hybrid thrust pad bearing and operating with non-Newtonian lubricant. The modified Reynolds equation which governs the flow of non-Newtonian lubricant in the clearance space has been solved using Finite Element Method. The simulated results indicate that the values of load carrying capacity, frictional power loss, maximum pressure and fluid film stiffness coefficient are significantly affected by the behavior of lubricant. The design of rolling element bearings has been a challenging task in the field of mechanical engineering. While most of the real aspects of the design are never disclosed by bearing manufacturers, the common engineer is left with no other alternative than to refer to standard tables and charts containing the bearing performance characteristics. This paper presents a more viable method to solve this problem using genetic algorithms (GAs). Since the algorithm is basically a guided random search, it weakens the chances of getting trapped in local maxima or minima. The “Surface Crack in Flexure” method is widely used for fracture toughness (KIc) determination of ceramics. In part I of the paper we developed the theoretical fundamentals to apply this procedure to ceramic balls by using the stress application as developed for the so-called “Notched ball test”. The new test (SCF-NB) can be used to test spherical components without the need to cut out special specimens such as bending bars. In this work the practical part is presented including suggestions for crack introduction and specimen preparation and possible measurement errors are discussed. It is concluded that a measurement error less than ±5% is possible.Experiments on balls and bars made from the same silicon nitride ceramic indicate that SCF-NB delivers the same KIc-values as standardised measurements on bars. Additionally, KIc-values obtained for silicon carbide, alumina and zirconia ceramics are presented. They coincide with KIc-data from the literature. 相似文献

In high-speed rolling element bearings, the drag forces can be prominent and it is demonstrated in this investigation that the classical models may not be appropriate for correctly estimating this power loss contribution. A modification of the models is thus proposed, including the usual drag forces formulation relying upon the drag coefficient to be evaluated from a numerical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. A three-dimensional approach that considers both the rings and the cylinder ends seems the only adequate approach to be used because a two-dimensional approach predicts a drag coefficient value that is too low. When using the former computed drag coefficient for the evaluation of the total power losses, high values of oil volume fraction must be employed to recover the measured power losses. 相似文献
