ABSTRACTSmoking is a big public health issue because of the harmful substances generated. To diminish the risk of smoking, cut tobacco was washed with pure water, aqueous solution of sodium carbonate, or citric acid to remove the precursors of harmful substances in this work. The composition and pyrolysis kinetics of washed cut tobacco were determined to interpret the reduction in harmful substances generated during fast pyrolysis process. Sugar and alkaloid in cut tobacco were removed partly during prewash process. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that cut tobacco washed with aqueous solution of citric acid was pyrolyzed at higher temperature, while the one washed with the solution of sodium carbonate was pyrolyzed at lower temperature. The changes in composition and pyrolysis kinetics resulted in significant reduction in benzo[a]pyrene, phenol, and nitrosamine 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone generated during pyrolysis, demonstrating that wash of cut tobacco with suitable chemicals is a promising approach to reduce the harmful substances generated during smoking. 相似文献

Cigarette smoke is an aerosol containing a large number of chemicals, including toxicants. In recent years, a number of cigarette filter additives have been evaluated for their toxicant filtration properties. Screening is a useful tool to accelerate the testing and development of new filter additives and filtration mechanisms. The evaluation of a filter material screening technique based on the so‐called InfraSORP technology is described. By comparing InfraSORP measurements with reference cigarette smoke experiments of potential cigarette filter materials like activated carbons and ion‐exchange resin, an excellent correlation is demonstrated. Cigarette consumption negatively affects bone-matter and -stability, partially due to increased oxidative stress. Garlic has been shown to have anti-oxidative properties. Therefore, the intention was to investigate whether garlic oil blend (GOB) reduces cellular damage in human osteoblasts exposed to cigarette smoke medium (CSM). Formation of ROS was rapidly induced in osteoblasts exposed to CSM and their viability decreased in a concentration- and time-dependent manner (EC50 ≈ 0.75 OD320). Co-, pre- and post-incubation with GOB significantly improved their viability. Testing both major components of GOB, diallyl-sulphide (DAS) and diallyl-disulphide (DADS), showed that DADS is more efficient. DADS markedly induced the expression of the anti-oxidative enzyme haeme-oxygenase (HO)-1. The HO-1 inhibitor zinc-protoporphyrin reduced the protective effect of all three substances. Summarizing, CSM damages osteoblasts by accumulation of ROS. GOB and especially DADS reduce this damage by scavenging the radicals and by up-regulating HO-1. Thus, a garlic rich diet or dietary supplementation with DADS might improve bone-matter, -stability and even fracture healing in smokers. 相似文献
