The relationship between light and design is inseparable. Light reveals form, space, texture and colour - all of which are fundamental architectural considerations. Furthermore, light is essential to carry out most activities in buildings. Whether for aesthetic effect - to create mood or stimulation - or to fulfil functional requirements - for visibility and safety - light can be provided artificially or as daylight.It is evident that the use of artificial light in buildings accounts for a significant proportion of primary energy consumption - it is often the single largest use in the energy balance. By the careful introduction of natural light and the appropriate control of electric light, important energy savings can be achieved, whilst reinstating the role of daylighting in modern architecture.This paper discusses the roles of daylight in architecture; introduces recent research, development and technologies; and presents a number of case study examples to demonstrate the application of technology.  相似文献

Municipalities can form a driving force behind the deployment of new telecom infrastructure. While a telecom operator focuses on direct (financial) profits, a municipality is mainly interested in the social benefits for its inhabitants. In this paper, we evaluate a wireless municipality network from both a technical and an economic point of view. WiFi and WiMAX are considered as the most suited technologies for this purpose. A detailed techno-economic study has been performed including forecasting of the user adoption, dimensioning of the wireless network and modelling the related costs and revenues. The trade-off between installing a high number of relatively cheap WiFi access points, and a smaller number of more expensive WiMAX base stations for delivering full coverage is investigated in several scenarios.

The health benefits of whole grain consumption can be partly attributed to the inclusion of the bran or outer-layers of the grain rich in dietary fibre. Fibre is fermented in the colon, leading to the production of beneficial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFA). The effect of five different types of bread on the SCFA production was studied in an in vitro model of human colon. Additionally, the postprandial effects of two selected breads on the SCFA plasma concentrations were investigated in men. A higher in vitro production of butyrate was induced by wholemeal wheat bread with bioprocessed bran than by native bran. The increase in butyrate seemed to be in exchange for propionate, whilst the total SCFA production remained similar. However, differences between the two breads in the postprandial butyrate concentrations could not be detected in peripheral blood of men, probably due to an effective utilisation by colonocytes.  相似文献

The substantial increase in DNA sequencing efforts has led to a rapid expansion of available sequences in glycoside hydrolase families. The ever-increasing sequence space presents considerable opportunities for the search for enzymes with novel functionalities. In this work, the sequence-function space of glycoside hydrolase family 94 (GH94) was explored in detail, using a combined approach of phylogenetic analysis and sequence similarity networks. The identification and experimental screening of unknown clusters led to the discovery of an enzyme from the soil bacterium Paenibacillus polymyxa that acts as a 4-O-β-d -glucosyl-d -galactose phosphorylase (GGalP), a specificity that has not been reported to date. Detailed characterization of GGalP revealed that its kinetic parameters were consistent with those of other known phosphorylases. Furthermore, the enzyme could be used for production of the rare disaccharides 4-O-β-d -glucosyl-d -galactose and 4-O-β-d -glucosyl-l -arabinose. Our current work highlights the power of rational sequence space exploration in the search for novel enzyme specificities, as well as the potential of phosphorylases for rare disaccharide synthesis.  相似文献

Battery lifetime is a key impediment to long-lasting low power sensor nodes and networks thereof. Energy harvesting—conversion of ambient energy into electrical energy—has emerged as a viable alternative to battery power. Indeed, the harvested energy mitigates the dependency on battery power and can be used to transmit data. However, unfair data delivery delay and energy expenditure among sensors remain important issues for such networks. We study performance of sensor networks with mobile sinks: a mobile sink moves towards the transmission range of the different static sensor nodes to collect their data. We propose and analyse a Markovian queueing system to study the impact of uncertainty in energy harvesting, energy expenditure, data acquisition and data transmission. In particular, the energy harvesting sensor node is described by a system with two queues, one queue corresponding to the battery and the other to the data buffer. We illustrate our approach by numerical examples which show that energy harvesting correlation considerably affects performance measures like the mean data delay and the effective data collection rate.  相似文献

Solid‐state refill friction stir spot welding (RFSSW) technology offers significant benefits in the fabrication of aluminium structures in the transport and aerospace industries. In this paper, the joining of 1.6‐mm‐thick Alclad 7075‐T6 aluminium alloy sheets is investigated. High‐cycle fatigue strength tests of single‐lap welded joints were carried out on an Instron E10000 testing machine with a limited number of cycles equal to 2 × 106. The welding of overlap fatigue specimens was conducted using an RPS100 spot welder by Harms & Wende GmbH & Co KG. C‐mode scanning acoustic microscopy (C‐SAM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were utilised to evaluate the joint quality and characterise the microstructure. The paper discusses the effect of the maximum load force and defects (voids, hook, kissing bond, bonding ligament, etc) associated with the material flow in the weld on the failure mechanism. Insufficient plasticisation of sheet material and mixing of the material in the weld area are crucial defects that influence the number of destructive cycles. The weld defects in the joint structure are a source of a decrease in the fatigue life compared with the fatigue life of defect‐free welds. It was also found that RFSSW joint defects can be effectively detected by the nondestructive C‐SAM method.  相似文献
