ABSTRACT

Social networking technology has the potential to transform how organizations communicate, cooperate, and connect with key stakeholders. Our research explores how social networking technologies are deployed within organizations and how the use of these technologies is related to effectiveness in organizational communication and promotion. We also identify the facilitating factors and constraints around the use of social networking tools for communication. To examine these questions, we conducted interviews with 131 senior level executives across a broad range of organizations and employed both quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis. The executives were asked to rate numerically and then discuss in narrative form a series of questions about IT strategy and issues affecting social networking in their organization. We find important differences both in the types of tools used as well as how they are used and discuss the implications of our findings for companies seeking to more effectively harness social networking technologies.  相似文献

This paper offers an introduction to poststructuralist interpretivist research in information systems, through a poststructuralist theoretical reading of the phenomenon and experience of social networking websites, such as Facebook. This is undertaken through an exploration of how loyally a social networking profile can represent the essence of an individual, and whether Platonic notions of essence, and loyalty of copy, are disturbed by the nature of a social networking profile, in ways described by poststructuralist thinker Deleuze's notions of the reversal of Platonism. In bringing a poststructuralist critique to such hugely successful and popular social information systems, the paper attempts to further open up the black box of the computer ‘user’, extend interpretive approaches to information systems research to embrace poststructuralism, and explore how notions of the Self might be reflected through engagement with information system (IS), and how an IS appreciation of the phenomenon of global social networking may benefit from embracing such a poststructuralist approach.  相似文献

Everyone on the Internet knows the buzzword social networking. Social networking services (SNS) usually offer the same basic functionalities: network of friends listings, person surfing, private messaging etc. With such features, SNSs demonstrate how the Internet continues to better connect people for various social and professional purposes. The fundamental problems with today's SNSs block their potential to access the full range of available content and networked people online. A possible solution is to build semantic social networking into the fabric of the next-generation Internet itself-interconnecting both content and people in meaningful ways. The semantic Web is a useful platform for linking and for performing operations on diverse person-and object-related data gathered from heterogeneous social networking sites. In the other direction, object-centered networks can serve as rich data sources for semantic Web applications.  相似文献

The emergence and standardization of system area networks (SANs) has provided distributed applications with a medium for high‐bandwidth, low‐latency communication. Standard user‐level networking architecture such as the Virtual Interface (VI) Architecture enables distributed applications to perform low overhead communication over SANs. The VI Architecture significantly reduces system processing overheads and provides each consumer process with a protected, directly accessible interface to the network hardware. Developing distributed applications using low‐level primitives provided by user‐level networking architecture like the VI Architecture is complex and requires significant effort. This paper describes how high‐level communication paradigms like stream sockets and remote procedure call (RPC) can be efficiently built over the VI Architecture. To evaluate performance benefits for standard client–server and multi‐threaded environments, our focus is on off‐the‐shelf sockets and RPC interfaces and commercially available VI Architecture‐based SANs. The key design techniques developed in this paper include credit‐based flow control, decentralized user‐level protocol processing, caching of pinned communication buffers, and deferred processing of completed send operations. In the experimental evaluation, the one‐way bandwidth achieved by stream sockets over VI Architecture was three to four times better than the bandwidth achieved by running legacy protocols over the same interconnect. On the same SAN, high‐performance stream sockets and RPC over VI Architecture achieve significantly better (between 2× and 3× less) latency than conventional stream sockets and RPC over standard networking protocols in a Windows NT? 4.0 environment. Furthermore, our high‐performance RPC transparently improved the network performance of the distributed component object model (DCOM) by a factor of two to three. These advances have resulted in pushing high-speed networking into new domains. Significant progress has also been made in the design of new networking applications and middleware, and toward solving complex regulatory issues. This article looks into the latest advances in wired networking. Excessive focus on one element of networking at the expense of others has led to many widely publicized networking technology failures. Business customers have only slowly been adopting VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technologies. Many will agree that email is badly broken when it comes to protecting users from spam, especially spoofing. With the growing prevalence of social networking sites, the increasing visibility into end users’ social connections will make it easy for scammers to figure out how to better forge return addresses, among other problems. While research on organizational online networking recently increased significantly, most studies adopt quantitative research designs with a focus on the consequences of social network configurations. Very limited attention is paid to comprehensive theoretical conceptions of the complex phenomenon of organizational online networking. We address this gap by adopting a theoretical framework of the deep structure of organizational online networking with a focus on their emerging meaning for the employees. We apply and assess the framework in a qualitative case study of a large‐scale implementation of a corporate social network site (SNS) in a global organization. We reveal organizational online networking as a multi‐dimensional phenomenon with multiplex relationships that are unbalanced, primarily consist of weak ties and are subject to temporal change. Further, we identify discourse drivers and information retrievers as two mutually interdependent actor roles as an explanation for uneven levels of user contributions to the SNS. Based on our analysis, we elicit abstract order principles, such as topical discourses, and identify transactive memory theory as a potent explanation of the evolving interaction structures. We finally discuss how the deep structure framework can contribute to future research on organizational networks.  相似文献
