Software engineering technology innovation - Turning research results into industrial success

This paper deals with the innovation of software engineering technologies. These technologies are methods and tools for conducting software development and maintenance. We consider innovation as a process consisting of two phases, being technology creation and technology transfer. In this paper, we focus mainly on the transfer phase.Technology transfer is of mutual interest to both academia and industry. Transfer is important for academia, because it shows the industrial relevance of their research results to, for example, their sponsoring authorities. Showing the industrial applicability of research results is sometimes referred to as valorization of research. Nowadays, valorization is often required by research funding bodies. The transfer is important for industries, because innovating their development processes and their products is supportive in gaining a competitive edge or remaining competitive in their business. We describe the technology transfer phase by means of three activities: technology evaluation, technology engineering, and technology embedding. The technology evaluation activity is perceived as the main gate between the technology creation phase and the technology transfer phase. With two case studies, originating from the Dutch high-tech systems industry, we will illustrate the activities in the transfer phase.In addition to the process we will also define the main roles in a software engineering technology innovation, namely: the technology provider (academic research, industrial research and technology vendor) and the technology receiver (industrial development). With those roles we also address the issues concerning the ownership of technologies.

Resource loss from technology overload and its impact on work-family conflict: Can leaders help?

With the ever increasing usage of information and communication technology, it is no surprise that technology end-users are experiencing technology overload. Although this technology overload has been shown to have a negative impact on work related outcomes, much less is known about how it is associated with work-family conflict (WFC). This study set out to answer that question by building on Conservation of Resources theory and examining three types of technology overload (information overload, communication overload, and system feature overload) and their relationships with WFC. Additionally, we investigated leader–member exchange quality to see how it impacts the relationships between each type of technology overload and WFC. We examined these relationships in a sample of 219 technology end-users, and our results indicated that all three types of technology overload are associated with WFC. Further, for two types of technology overload, the lower the quality of leader–member exchange relationships, the greater the impact of technology overload on WFC.

Household technology adoption,use, and impacts: Past,present, and future

Since the 1980s, researchers have been studying the phenomenon associated with technology being diffused to the household. In this paper, three themes in that stream of research, specifically adoption, use, and impacts, are explored. Key studies from prior research within each theme are discussed and directions for future research are offered. The directions for future research range from investigating adoption issues associated with the digital divide to understanding the impacts of new technology and social networking sites on individuals and families. The evolving nature of the technology continues to offer interesting research directions and challenges, with the study of unintended consequences of technology use presenting, perhaps, the greatest opportunities.
