In hybrid ad hoc networks, mobile nodes can communicate not only with each other in a self-organizing manner, but also with nodes on wired networks for extensive information retrieval and dissemination. In this article we consider efficient routing operations between any two nodes in an ad hoc network that is linked to wired networks by an access point. To build routes with low routing overhead efficiently, we develop a new routing scheme of region-based routing (RBR), which utilizes hop counts between mobile nodes and the access point to localize a route discovery within a limited topological region. Limiting the region of route discovery results in fewer routing messages and therefore reduces routing overhead. Simulation results show that the RBR scheme greatly reduces routing overhead while preserving a high rate of success for route discovery to the destination  相似文献

In traditional stability-oriented route discovery of mobile ad hoc networks, in-between nodes need to rebroadcast identical route request (RREQ) packets, which contain same source node ID and broadcast sequence number, to discover more stable route, yet it increases routing overhead and data transmission delay obviously. Therefore, a stability-oriented route discovery algorithm is proposed to limit routing overhead and decrease transmission delay. In this algorithm, all neighbor nodes of some node will play a mix strategy game named stability-based RREQ forwarding game after receiving an identical RREQ, and independently determine the RREQ forwarding probability based on Nash equilibrium, respectively. The simulation results show that the proposed stability-oriented route discovery algorithm not only reduces routing overhead and transmission delay effectively, but also improve other routing performance.  相似文献

Scalable Routing Protocol for Ad Hoc Networks   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
In this paper we present a scalable routing protocol for ad hoc networks. The protocol is based on a geographic location management strategy that keeps the overhead of routing packets relatively small. Nodes are assigned home regions and all nodes within a home region know the approximate location of the registered nodes. As nodes travel, they send location update messages to their home regions and this information is used to route data packets. In this paper, we derive theoretical performance results for the protocol and prove that the control packet overhead scales linearly with node speed and as N 3/2 with increasing number of nodes. These results indicate that our protocol is well suited to relatively large ad hoc networks where nodes travel at high speed. Finally, we use simulations to validate our analytical model.  相似文献

ABRP: Anchor-based Routing Protocol for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Ad hoc networks, which do not rely on any infrastructure such as access points or base stations, can be deployed rapidly and inexpensively even in situations with geographical or time constraints. Ad hoc networks are attractive in both military and disaster situations and also in commercial uses like sensor networks or conferencing. In ad hoc networks, each node acts both as a router and as a host. The topology of an ad hoc network may change dynamically, which makes it difficult to design an efficient routing protocol. As more and more wireless devices connect to the network, it is important to design a scalable routing protocol for ad hoc networks. In this paper, we present Anchor-based Routing Protocol (ABRP), a scalable routing protocol for ad hoc networks. It is a hybrid routing protocol, which combines the table-based routing strategy with the geographic routing strategy. However, GPS (Global Positioning System) (Kaplan, Understanding GPS principles and Applications, Boston: Artech House publishers, 1996) support is not needed. ABRP consists of a location-based clustering protocol, an intra-cell routing protocol and an inter-cell routing protocol. The location-based clustering protocol divides the network region into different cells. The intra-cell routing protocol routes packets within one cell. The inter-cell routing protocol is used to route packets between nodes in different cells. The combination of intra-cell and inter-cell routing protocol makes ABRP highly scalable, since each node needs to only maintain routes within a cell. The inter-cell routing protocol establishes multiple routes between different cells, which makes ABRP reliable and efficient. We evaluate the performance of ABRP using ns2 simulator. We simulated different size of networks from 200 nodes to 1600 nodes. Simulation results show that ABRP is efficient and scales well to large networks. ABRP combines the advantages of multi-path routing strategy and geographic routing strategy—efficiency and scalability, and avoids the burden—GPS support.  相似文献

SMORT: Scalable multipath on-demand routing for mobile ad hoc networks   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

Increasing popularity and availability of portable wireless devices, which constitute mobile ad hoc networks, calls for scalable ad hoc routing protocols. On-demand routing protocols adapt well with dynamic topologies of ad hoc networks, because of their lower control overhead and quick response to route breaks. But, as the size of the network increases, these protocols cease to perform due to large routing overhead generated while repairing route breaks. We propose a multipath on-demand routing protocol (SMORT), which reduces the routing overhead incurred in recovering from route breaks, by using secondary paths. SMORT computes fail-safe multiple paths, which provide all the intermediate nodes on the primary path with multiple routes (if exists) to destination. Exhaustive simulations using GloMoSim with large networks (2000 nodes) confirm that SMORT is scalable, and performs better even at higher mobility and traffic loads, when compared to the disjoint multipath routing protocol (DMRP) and ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose an interference aware expanding region search algorithm to locate a destination in mobile ad hoc networks. In the proposed approach, signal to interference plus noise ration (SINR) is used in place of TTL field of a route request packet. The source node initializes the search query with a threshold value of SINR. Each relay node forwards the packet if its SINR satisfies the threshold criteria provided by the source node in RREQ packet. As a result, the low SINR nodes are removed in route discovery phase prior to the establishment of routes. The simulation results show that proposed algorithm provides significant improvement in performance of reactive routing protocol in terms of reduced routing overhead, reduced energy consumption, and increased network throughput.

On-demand routing protocols have the potential to provide scalable information delivery in large ad hoc networks. The novelty of these protocols is in their approach to route discovery, where a route is determined only when it is required by initiating a route discovery procedure. Much of the research in this area has focused on reducing the route discovery overhead when prior knowledge of the destination is available at the source or by routing through stable links. Hence, many of the protocols proposed to date still resort to flooding the network when prior knowledge about the destination is un-available. This paper proposes a novel routing protocol for ad hoc networks, called On-demand Tree-based Routing Protocol (OTRP). This protocol combines the idea of hop-by-hop routing (as used by AODV) with an efficient route discovery algorithm called Tree-based Optimised Flooding (TOF) to improve scalability of ad hoc networks when there is no prior knowledge about the destination. To achieve this in OTRP, route discovery overheads are minimised by selectively flooding the network through a limited set of nodes, referred to as branching nodes. The key factors governing the performance of OTRP are theoretically analysed and evaluated, including the number of branch nodes, location of branching nodes and number of Route REQuest (RREQ) retries. It was found that the performance of OTRP (evaluated using a variety of well-known metrics) improves as the number of branching nodes increases and the number of consumed RREQ retries is reduced. Additionally, theoretical analysis and simulation results shows that OTRP outperforms AODV, DYMO, and OLSR with reduced overheads as the number of nodes and traffic load increases.  相似文献

On-demand routing protocols for ad hoc networks reduce the cost of routing in high mobility environments. However, route discovery in on-demand routing is typically performed via network-wide flooding, which consumes a substantial amount of bandwidth. In this paper, we present bypass routing, a local recovery protocol that aims to reduce the frequency of route request floods triggered by broken routes. Specifically, when a broken link is detected, a node patches the affected route using local information, which is acquired on-demand, and thereby bypasses the broken link. We implemented SLR (Source Routing with Local Recovery) as a prototype of our approach. Simulation studies show that SLR achieves efficient and effective local recovery while maintaining acceptable overhead.  相似文献

This paper presents an approach to power-conserving routing of ad hoc mobile wireless networks. This approach relies on entropy-constrained routing algorithms, which were developed by utilizing the information-theoretic concept of the entropy to gradually reduce the uncertainty associated with route discovery through a deterministic annealing process. Entropy-constrained routing algorithms were tested using a single performance metric related to the distance between the nodes and to the power consumption associated with packet transmission. This paper also expands the versatility of entropy-constrained routing algorithms by making them capable of discovering routes based on multiple performance metrics. In this study, the second performance metric employed for route discovery relied on the power availability in the nodes of the network. The proposed routing approach was evaluated in terms of the power consumption associated with the routing of packets over an ad hoc mobile network in a variety of operating conditions.  相似文献

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are dynamic wireless networks that have no fixed infrastructures and do not require predefined configurations. In this infrastructure-less paradigm, nodes in addition of being hosts, they also act as relays and forward data packets for other nodes in the network. Due to limited resources in MANETs such as bandwidth and power, the performance of the routing protocol plays a significant role. A routing protocol in MATET should not introduce excessive control messages to the network in order to save network bandwidth and nodes power. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic approach based on Bayesian inference to enable efficient routing in MANETs. Nodes in the proposed approach utilize the broadcast nature of the wireless channel to observe the network topology by overhearing wireless transmissions at neighboring nodes in a distributed manner, and learn from these observations when taking packet forwarding decision on the IP network layer. Our simulation results show that our routing approach reduces the number of control message (routing overhead) by a ratio up to 20 % when the network size is 60 nodes, while maintaining similar average route establishment delay as compared to the ad-hoc on demand routing protocol.  相似文献

The relative distance microdiscovery (RDM) ad hoc routing (RDMAR) protocol is an on-demand protocol that reactively discovers and repairs routes within a local region of the network. This is accomplished by a simple distributed route searching algorithm, which we refer to as RDM, using a probability model for estimating the relative distance between two nodes as the basis for routing searching and, thus, for routing decisions. The relative distance (RD) between two nodes is the hop-wise distance that a message needs to travel from one node to the other. Knowledge of this RV is leveraged by the RDMAR protocol to improve the efficiency of a reactive route discovery/repair mechanism. Previous work has demonstrated that localization of routing control messaging serves to minimize communication overhead and overall network congestion. We analyze the RDMAR protocol and its individual mechanisms, and determine their effectiveness and the manner in which they interact in order to contribute to the overall protocol performance. A framework for the modeling and analysis of the RDM algorithm is also presented and, based on this, a method for estimating a nearly optimal RD between two mobiles is then introduced. As demonstrated through simulations, the performance of RDM is very close to this of an optimal route searching policy while the query localization protocol is able to reduce the routing overhead significantly, often in the neighborhood of 48-50% of the flooding-based schemes  相似文献

To provide high quality communications service among mobile wireless devices is basically a challenging task in wireless ad hoc networks. In this paper, we propose a Route Stability based QoS Routing (RSQR) protocol in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) which is an extension of QoS routing with throughput and delay constraints. Ensuring a data path to be valid for sufficiently longer period of time is a very difficult problem in MANET due to its highly dynamic nature. We propose a simple model for computing link stability and route stability based on received signal strengths. By including some extra fields in route request/reply packets, the route stability information can be utilized to select a route with higher stability among all the feasible routes between a given source destination pair. Further, inclusion of a signal strength based admission control enhances the performance of the routing. Results of our experiments show performance improvements in terms of packet delivery ratio, control overhead and average end-to-end delay in comparison with a QoS routing protocol proposed by Q. Xue and A. Ganz.  相似文献

VANET is an ad hoc network that formed between vehicles. Security in VANET plays vital role. AODV routing protocol is a reactive or on-demand routing protocol which means if there is data to be send then the path will create. AODV is the most commonly used topology based routing protocol for VANET. Using of broadcast packets in the AODV route discovery phase caused it is extremely vulnerable against DOS and DDOS flooding attacks. Flooding attack is type of a denial of service attack that causes loss of network bandwidth and imposes high overhead to the network. The method proposed in this paper called Balanced AODV (B-AODV) because it expects all network node behave normally. If network nodes are out of the normal behavior (too much route request) then they identified as malicious node. B-AODV is designed with following feature: (1) The use of adaptive threshold according to network conditions and nodes behavior (balance index) (2) Not using additional routing packets to detect malicious nodes (3) Perform detection and prevention operations independently on each node (4) Perform detection and prevention operations in real time (5) No need for promiscuous mode. This method for detection and prevention flooding attack uses average and standard deviation. In this method each node is employing balance index for acceptation or rejection RREQ packets. The results of the simulation in NS2 indicates B-AODV is resilience against flooding attack and prevent loss of network bandwidth. Comparing between AODV with B-AODV in normal state (non-attacker) shows B-AODV is exactly match with AODV in network performance, this means that the B-AODV algorithm does not impose any overhead and false positive to AODV.  相似文献

This paper introduces a game theoretic method, called forwarding dilemma game (FDG), which controls routing overhead in dense multi-hop wireless ad hoc networks. The players of the game are the wireless nodes with set of strategies {Forward, Not forward}. The game is played whenever an arbitrary node in the network receives a flooding packet. In FDG, every player needs to know the number of players of the game. That is why a neighbor discovery protocol (NDP) is introduced. In order for NDP to function, a field is attached to the flooding packets (routing overhead packets). The mixed strategy Nash equilibrium is used as a solution for the FDG. This provides the probability that the flooding packet would be forwarded by the receiver node. FDG with NDP is implemented in AODV protocol in Network Simulator NS-2 to verify its performance with simulations. FDG with NDP improves performance of the AODV compared to the same network with only AODV protocol in moderate and high node densities. FDG can be applied to any routing protocol that uses flooding in the route discovery phase.  相似文献

We study routing misbehavior in MANETs (mobile ad hoc networks) in this paper. In general, routing protocols for MANETs are designed based on the assumption that all participating nodes are fully cooperative. However, due to the open structure and scarcely available battery-based energy, node misbehaviors may exist. One such routing misbehavior is that some selfish nodes will participate in the route discovery and maintenance processes but refuse to forward data packets. In this paper, we propose the 2ACK scheme that serves as an add-on technique for routing schemes to detect routing misbehavior and to mitigate their adverse effect. The main idea of the 2ACK scheme is to send two-hop acknowledgment packets in the opposite direction of the routing path. In order to reduce additional routing overhead, only a fraction of the received data packets are acknowledged in the 2ACK scheme. Analytical and simulation results are presented to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme  相似文献

In mobile ad hoc networks, node mobility causes frequent link failures, thus invalidating the routes containing those links. Once a link is detected broken, an alternate route has to be discovered, incurring extra route discovery overhead and packet latency. The traffic is also interrupted at the transport layer, and proper traffic recovery schemes have to be applied. To reduce the frequency of costly route re-discovery procedures and to maintain continuous traffic flow for reliable transport layer protocols, we suggest discovering long lifetime routes (LLR). In this paper, we first propose g-LLR, a global LLR discovery algorithm, that discovers LLRs of different route lengths for any given pair of nodes. We then propose a distributed LLR discovery scheme (d-LLR) that discovers two of the most desirable LLRs through one best-effort route discovery procedure. Simulations show that the lifetimes of the routes discovered by d-LLR are very close to those discovered by g-LLR. Simulations also show that the performance of different transport layer protocols is greatly improved by using LLRs. More importantly, traffic can remain continuous using the provided LLRs. D-LLR can be implemented as an extension to existing ad hoc routing protocols, and it improves the performance of transport layer protocols without modifications on them.  相似文献

Within ad hoc and wireless sensor networks, communications are accomplished in dynamic environments with a random movement of mobile devices. Thus, routing protocols over these networks are an important concern to offer efficient network scalability, manage topology information, and prolong the network lifetime. Optimized link state routing (OLSR) is one of those routing protocols implemented in ad hoc and wireless sensor networks. Because of its proactive technique, routes between two nodes are established in a very short time, but it can spend a lot of resources for selecting the multipoint relays (MPRs: nodes responsible for routing data) and exchanging topology control information. Thus, nodes playing for a long time a role of MPR within networks implementing such protocol can rapidly exhaust their batteries, which create route failures and affect the network lifetime. Our main approach relies on analyzing this concern by introducing a new criterion that implements a combination between the residual energy of a node and its reachability in order to determine the optimal number of MPRs and sustain the network lifetime. Simulations performed illustrate obviously that our approach is more significant compared with the basic heuristic used by original OLSR to compute the MPR set of a node.  相似文献

We study the performance of route query control mechanisms for the zone routing protocol (ZRP) for ad hoc networks. The ZRP proactively maintains routing information for a local neighborhood (routing zone), while reactively acquiring routes to destinations beyond the routing zone. This hybrid routing approach can be more efficient than traditional routing schemes. However, without proper query control techniques, the ZRP cannot provide the expected reduction in the control traffic. Our proposed query control schemes exploit the structure of the routing zone to provide enhanced detection and prevention of overlapping queries. These techniques can be applied to single- or multiple-channel ad hoc networks to improve both the delay and control traffic performance of ZRP. Our query control mechanisms allow ZRP to provide routes to all accessible network nodes, with less control traffic than purely proactive link state or purely reactive route discovery, and with less delay than conventional flood searching  相似文献

QoS routing plays an important role for providing QoS in wireless ad hoc networks. The goals of QoS routing are in general twofold: selecting routes with satisfied QoS requirement(s), and achieving global efficiency in resource utilization. In this article we first discuss some key design considerations in providing QoS routing support, and present a review of previous work addressing the issue of route selection subject to QoS constraint(s). We then devise an on-demand delay-constrained unicast routing protocol. Various strategies are employed in the protocol to reduce the communication overhead in acquiring cost-effective delay-constrained routes. Simulation results are used to verify our expectation of the high performance of the devised protocol. Finally, we discuss some possible future directions for providing efficient QoS routing support in wireless ad hoc networks.  相似文献

Mobile ad hoc networks are characterized by multi-hop wireless links, absence of any cellular infrastructure, and frequent host mobility. Design of efficient routing protocols in such networks is a challenging issue. A class of routing protocols called on-demand protocols has recently found attention because of their low routing overhead. We propose a technique that can reduce the routing overhead even further. The on-demand protocols depend on query floods to discover routes whenever a new route is needed. Our technique utilizes prior routing histories to localize the query flood to a limited region of the network. Simulation results demonstrate excellent reduction of routing overheads with this mechanism. This also contributes to a reduced level of network congestion and better end-to-end delay performance of data packets.  相似文献
