Award for distinguished professional contributions to independent or institutional practice in the private sector.

This award recognizes outstanding service delivery by a licensed psychologist who is primarily engaged in the practice of psychology in a private sector setting. The award is intended to recognize outstanding practitioners in psychology. Nominations will be considered for psychologists working in any area of clinical specialization, health services provision, or consulting. Services provided to any patient population or professional clientele in an independent or institutional practice setting will be considered. Contributions can be judged distinguished by virtue of peer recognition, advancement of the public's recognition of psychology as a profession, relevant professional association honors, or other meritorious accomplishments denoting excellence as a practitioner, including advancement of the profession. In previous years, this award was called the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Applied Psychology as a Professional Practice. The name was changed in 2003 to better describe this award. Dorothea Jameson and Leo Hurvich: Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.

Recognizes the receipt of the American Psychological Association's 1972 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award by Dorothea Jameson and Leo Hurvich. The award citation reads: "The research team of Dorothea Jameson and Leo Hurvich has significantly advanced our knowledge of color vision through a broadly based program of conceptually sophisticated and rigorously conducted experiments. Their research has provided basic data which are essential to theory and at the same time provide a quantitative framework for physiological investigations. Their very unusual scholarship, technical skill, untiring motivation, and contagious enthusiasm for scientific discovery have set new standards of excellence against which future experimenters and theorists will be judged." Award for Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training: Ludy T. Benjamin, Jr.

Ludy T. Benjamin, Jr. received the 2001 Award for distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training. He was given this award for his passion, dedication, and talent that inspire excellence in students and continuous self-improvement in teachers. His work has enriched the lives of countless students and teachers. He ushered Advanced Placement Psychology examinations into high schools and conducted summer workshops that rejuvenated psychology teachers. The Education and Training Board Awards were given for the first time in 1987 and include the Award for Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology, which recognizes a long-continued record of accomplishments, and the Award for Distinguished Contribution to Education and Training in Psychology. These awards are given to recognize psychologists who make traditional contributions to education and training in psychology, "who provide innovations or who are involved in developmental phases of programs that influence education and training," who are engaged in important research on education or training, the development of effective materials for instruction, or the establishment of workshops, conferences, or networks of communication for education and training; who exhibit achievement and leadership in administration that facilitates education and training; or who are active in professional organizations that promote excellence. The 1988 award for Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training in Psychology was presented to Stanley F. Schneider. Frank Fitzgerald Medal and Travel Award

Abstract

The Frank Fitzgerald Medal and Travel Award, a new personal award from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM³), is made to a young member who is active in the field of iron and steel and who has demonstrated excellence in, and commitment to, continuing professional development. Dr Chris McDonald, the inaugural recipient, reports on the activities the 2005 Award helped to fund. A paper was presented at the Asia Steel Conference and a tour undertaken of the Japanese steel industry.     

In memoriam: Sol L. Garfield, PhD (1918-2004).

It is with sadness that we note the passing of Sol Garfield. Sol L. Garfield was born on January 8, 1918, in Chicago and passed away on August 14, 2004 at the age of 86. Sol Garfield's contributions have been recognized many times by awards committees, perhaps most notably in the "Distinguished Professional Contributions to Knowledge" award of the American Psychological Association (APA), the "Distinguished Career Research" award of the Society for Psychotherapy Research, and as an honored figure in the APA Oral History of Psychology Project. There are few practitioner-scientists whose range of influence has stood up so well for such a long period of time. He is one of the most frequently cited and influential psychologists in America. He is also well known for leadership and administration in professional organizations, government research programs, and universities where high standards of performance and ethics are maintained. Sol Garfield will be sorely missed by society. He stood out as a consistent advocate of scientific evidence in service to psychotherapeutic practice.
