For four years, we have been developing a wide range of graduate and undergraduate degree programs related to integrated media systems on behalf of the Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC), for the School of Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC). The IMSC is a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center (ERC) that became operational in 1996. It is not an academic department; however, one of its important missions is education. Most of the developed degree programs have been for engineering students, but one is available to all students. These degree programs are administered either by an academic department (e.g., computer science) or by an assistant dean of the School of Engineering. The purpose of this article is to not only describe these degree programs, but to also provide some lessons that have been learned along the way, lessons that may help expedite the development of similar programs at other universities  相似文献

本文针对如何提高研究生遴选质量、选拔出更多优秀生源的问题,提出一种基于决策树算法的研究生遴选质量评价方法。首先通过分析研究生生源学校以及初试和复试等招生信息,同时结合对研究生的课程学习成绩、参与科研项目情况、硕士毕业论文质量的跟踪,建立了适合于计算机专业研究生质量的评价指标。然后采用经典的ID3决策树算法对相关数据进行分析挖掘,以评价现有研究生招生体系中各项指标对研究生培养质量的影响,并通过统计学方法对结论进行逆向分析验证。结果表明在研究生入学考核的各项指标中,面试成绩和上机考试成绩在区分考生能力、优秀研究生遴选中具有关键作用。  相似文献

Grid computing is taught at the University of Arkansas, focusing on the development of grid services, the Globus toolkit, and higher-level grid components. An early course, cluster and grid computing, successfully taught Globus materials to advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. However, the material assumed advanced knowledge of Java programming and covered networking and basic distributed systems concepts, and was therefore too advanced for beginning programming students. When teaching grid computing to beginners, we must focus on creating and submitting a grid job rather than programming grid services. We also teach grid computing to advanced science and engineering students whose programming skills are similar to those of beginning computer science students  相似文献

Since World War II, large research institutes have burgeoned forth on the campuses of many colleges and universities throughout the United States. Fulfilling at their inception a national need in time of crisis, they have continued in these less critical times to contribute importantly to the national research program. Their impact on academic curricula has been varied but no less important. The effective increase in faculty provided by academic research institutes is permitting the expansion of graduate course programs into ever widening areas of science and engineering in a manner responsive to contemporary scientific and technical developments. Expanded curricula and research facilities make it possible for students in increasing numbers to enter into research programs that attempt to prepare them realistically for the demands our technological society imposes upon them. Despite these evident advantages, research institutes have yet to find a truly permanent place in the academic structure. Financial difficulties, together with related problems of securing balance between research and academic obligations, characterize this paradoxical situation. Since these points bear strongly on the question of the proper utilization of our national scientific and engineering potential, let us examine the role academic research institutes can play on the educational scene with particular stress, by example, on those in the microwave field.  相似文献

Ubiquitous computing research has progressed rapidly over the last few years, and real-world applications, especially mobile networking devices, are booming in consumer markets. With rising industry demand and career opportunities, more and more universities are offering graduates ubiquitous computing courses in addition to classical computer science curricula, such as mobile computing and wireless sensor networks. Here, I outline a graduate-level ubiquitous computing course I taught for final-year master's and first-year doctoral students in Finland at Abo Akademi University in 2006. Finland - the home of Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker - has more mobile devices per person than any other country, and its students are very interested in ubiquitous computing technologies. The experiences gained and lessons learned are a good source of information and reference for other educators in this field.  相似文献

The paper describes a system level design approach to the wearable computers project at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The project is an unique example of a cross-disciplinary effort, drawing students from mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, computer science, and industrial design. Over the last six and half years that the course has been taught, teams of undergraduate and graduate students have designed and fabricated sixteen new generations of wearable computers, using an evolving artifact-specific, multidisciplinary design methodology. The complexity of their architectures has increased by a factor of over 200, and the complexity of the application has also increased significantly. We introduce a metric to compare wearable computers and show that their performances have increased by several orders of magnitude. A system-level approach to power/performance optimization is going to be a crucial catalyst for making wearable computers an everyday tool for the general public.  相似文献

In academia, most courses in DSP have historically been restricted to the graduate level and, at that level, the emphasis is often on the mathematics and theoretical issues. Following tradition, most curricula start with circuit theory and progress through continuous-time Fourier analysis to finally reach DSP. Motivation is the key issue. Most engineering students would probably testify that their initial courses are usually only endured, not enjoyed. In a marketplace with many students, educators could use the first course as a “gate.” However, many of the curriculum changes at the entry level have turned this attitude around by involving students in projects and activities that convey some interesting aspect of the engineering process.
