A technique that can suppress multiple-access interference (MAI) in space-time block-coded (STBC) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems is developed. The proposed scheme, called a constrained minimum mean square error (CMMSE) receiver, is an extension of the CMMSE receiver for a single-input-single-output system to MIMO systems. It is shown that the complexity of the proposed CMMSE receiver is almost independent of the number of transmitter antennas. The advantage of the proposed receiver over the existing receivers for STBC CDMA systems is demonstrated by comparing the closed-form expressions of the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio and simulated bit error rates. The results indicate that the proposed CMMSE receiver can provide a significant performance improvement over the conventional receivers and that the gain achieved by suppressing the MAI can be larger than that from increasing the transmitter or receiver diversity.  相似文献

Transmitter diversity in the downlink of code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems achieves similar performance gains to the mobile-station receiver diversity without the complexity of a mobile-station receiver antenna array. Pre-RAKE precoding at the transmitter can be employed to achieve the multipath diversity without the need of the RAKE receiver at the mobile station. We examine feasibility of several transmitter diversity techniques and precoding for the third-generation wideband CDMA (WCDMA) systems. In particular, selective transmit diversity, transmit adaptive array and space-time pre-RAKE (STPR) techniques are compared. It is demonstrated that the STPR method is the optimal method to combine antenna diversity and temporal precoding. This method achieves the gain of maximum ratio combining of all space and frequency diversity branches when perfect channel state information is available at the transmitter. We employ the long range fading prediction algorithm to enable transmitter diversity techniques for rapidly time varying multipath fading channels.  相似文献

A robust iterative multicarrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) receiver with adaptive multiple-access interference (MAI) suppression is proposed for a pilot symbols assisted system over a multipath fading channel with frequency offset. The design of the receiver involves a two-stage procedure. First, an adaptive filter based on the generalized sidelobe canceller (GSC) technique is constructed at each finger to perform despreading and suppression of MAI. Second, pilot symbols assisted frequency offset estimation, channel estimation and a RAKE combining give the estimate of signal symbols. In order to enhance the convergence behavior of the GSC adaptive filters, a decisions-aided scheme is proposed, in which the signal waveform is first reconstructed and then subtracted from the input data of the adaptive filters. With signal subtraction, the proposed MC-CDMA receiver can achieve nearly the performance of the ideal maximum signal-to-interference-plus noise ratio receiver assuming perfect channel and frequency offset information. Finally, a low-complexity partially adaptive (PA) realization of the GSC adaptive filters is presented as an alternative to the conventional multiuser detectors. The new PA receiver is shown to be robust to multiuser channel estimation errors and offer nearly the same performance of the fully adaptive receiver.  相似文献

Multiple-access interference (MAI) and time-varying multipath effects are the two most significant factors limiting the performance of code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems. While multipath effects are exploited in existing CDMA systems to combat fading, they are often considered a nuisance to MAI suppression. We propose an integrated framework based on canonical multipath-Doppler coordinates that exploits channel dispersion effects for MAI suppression. The canonical coordinates are defined by a fixed basis derived from a fundamental characterization of the propagation effects. The basis corresponds to uniformly spaced multipath delays and Doppler shifts of the signaling waveform that capture the essential degrees of freedom in the received signal and eliminate the need for estimating arbitrary delays and Doppler shifts. The framework builds on the notion of active coordinates that carry the desired signal energy, facilitate maximal exploitation of channel diversity, and provide minimum-complexity MAI suppression. Progressively powerful multiuser detectors are obtained by incorporating additional inactive coordinates carrying only MAI. Signal space partitioning in terms of active/inactive coordinates provides a direct handle on controlling receiver complexity to achieve a desired level of performance. System performance is analyzed for two characteristic time scales relative to the coherence time of the channel. Adaptive receiver structures are identified that are naturally amenable to blind implementations requiring knowledge of only the spreading code of the desired user.

This paper presents an analytical expression for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the pulse position modulated (PPM) signal in an ultrawideband (UWB) channel with multiple transmit and receive antennas. A generalized fading channel model that can capture the cluster property and the highly dense multipath effect of the UWB channel is considered. Through simulations, it is demonstrated that the derived analytical model can accurately estimate the mean and variance properties of the pulse-based UWB signals in a frequency-selective fading channel. Furthermore, the authors investigate to what extent the performance of the PPM-based UWB system can be further enhanced by exploiting the advantage of multiple transmit antennas or receive antennas. Numerical results show that using multiple transmit antennas in the UWB channel can improve the system performance in the manner of reducing signal variations. However, because of already possessing rich diversity inherently in the UWB channel, using multiple transmit antennas does not provide diversity gain in the strict sense [i.e., improving the slope of bit error rate (BER) versus SNR] but can possibly reduce the required fingers of the RAKE receiver for the UWB channel. Furthermore, because multiple receive antennas can provide higher antenna array combining gain, the multiple receive antennas technique can be used to improve the coverage performance for the UWB system, which is crucial for a UWB system due to the low transmission power operation.  相似文献

The effect of tap spacing on the performance of a RAKE receiver is analyzed analytically in a frequency-selective fading channel. A continuous time multipath fading channel model is used for the analysis, and the expression of the correlation between the desired signals, interference signals, and noise signals at the output of each branch of the RAKE receiver is derived for various chip waveforms. Since the noise components of each branch signal are correlated to each other, an optimum combining rule based on the maximum-likelihood criterion is derived to gain utmost performance. It is shown that the performance of the system can be improved by setting the tap spacing of the RARE receiver below the chip duration when the bandwidth of the transmitted signal is larger than the inverse of the chip duration. Also, it is shown that the normalized capacity of the system can be increased by using a chip waveform occupying wider bandwidth, which takes advantage of the increased diversity gain merits of a wide-band code-division multiple-access system at the same chip rate. It is noted that the derived combining rule gives diversity gain against the fading process as well as noise whitening processing gain against multiple-access interference at the same time  相似文献

The bit error rate (BER) performance of a two-dimensional (2-D) RAKE receiver, in combination with transmit diversity on the downlink of a wide-band CDMA (W-CDMA) system, is presented. The analyses assume correlated fading between receive antenna array elements, and an arbitrary number of independent but nonidentical resolvable multipaths combined by the RAKE receiver in the general Nakagami-m (1960) fading channel framework. The impact of the array configuration (e.g., the number of transmit antennas and receive antennas, the antenna element separation) and the operating environment parameters (such as the fading severity, angular spread and path delay profile) on the overall space-path diversity gain can be directly evaluated. In addition, the exact pairwise error probability of a convolutional coded system is obtained, and the coding gain of a space-path diversity receiver is quantified.  相似文献

A transmit–receive diversity system in correlated Rayleigh fading in which the receiver estimates the channel through pilot symbols, and feeds this information back to the transmitter through a feedback path, is considered. The imperfect channel state information (CSI) is used by the transmitter to obtain the transmit weight vector for data transmission. The optimum receiver in the maximum-likelihood (ML) sense obtained from the conditional distribution of the received signal vector, conditioned on the imperfect CSI and the transmit weight vector, is derived for the system. For the case of $M$-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK), an analytical expression for the conditional symbol error probability (SEP), conditioned on the channel estimate and the transmit weight vector, is obtained, with the transmit weight vector chosen to minimize this conditional SEP. For the receive-only and transmit-only correlation scenarios with ill-conditioned eigenvalues of the receive and transmit covariance matrices (that is, some of the eigenvalues are very small), we derive expressions for the diversity gain. Numerical results are presented to compare the performance of our receiver with that of a conventional receiver in case of exponentially correlated fading. These results show that the optimum receiver typically has about a 0.5-dB gain over a conventional receiver when the correlation coefficient exceeds 0.5 and the number of receive antennas is much larger than the number of transmit antennas.   相似文献

Diversity-multiplexing tradeoff in multiple-access channels   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
In a point-to-point wireless fading channel, multiple transmit and receive antennas can be used to improve the reliability of reception (diversity gain) or increase the rate of communication for a fixed reliability level (multiplexing gain). In a multiple-access situation, multiple receive antennas can also be used to spatially separate signals from different users (multiple-access gain). Recent work has characterized the fundamental tradeoff between diversity and multiplexing gains in the point-to-point scenario. In this paper, we extend the results to a multiple-access fading channel. Our results characterize the fundamental tradeoff between the three types of gain and provide insights on the capabilities of multiple antennas in a network context.  相似文献

This correspondence studies antenna selection for wireless communications systems that employ multiple transmit and receive antennas. We assume that (1) the channel is characterized by quasi-static Rayleigh flat fading, and the subchannels fade independently, (2) the channel state information (CSI) is exactly known at the receiver, (3) the selection is available only at the receiver, and it is based on the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at each receive antenna, and (4) space-time codes are used at the transmitter. We analyze the performance of such systems by deriving explicit upper bounds on the pairwise error probability (PEP). This performance analysis shows that (1) by selecting the set of antennas that observe the largest instantaneous SNR, one can achieve the same diversity gain as the one obtained by using all the receive antennas, provided that the underlying space-time code has full spatial diversity, and (2) in the case of rank-deficient space-time codes, the diversity gain may be dramatically reduced when antenna selection is used. However, we emphasize that in both cases the coding gain is reduced with antenna selection compared to the full complexity system. Based on the upper bounds derived, we describe code design principles suitable for antenna selection. Specifically, for systems with two transmit antennas, we design space-time codes that perform better than the known ones when antenna selection is employed. Finally, we present numerical examples and simulation results that validate our analysis and code design principles.  相似文献

Rapid growth and increasing demands for near-ubiquitous high-quality high-data-rate services present the most challenges for wireless system design. As an effective method to provide such services, space-time (ST) coding is gaining more and more attention. The paper extends ST coding, originally designed for known frequency-nonselective fading channels, to unknown frequency-selective channels. An ST transmit diversity wireless time-division multiple-access system, that is equipped with multiple antennas at both transmit and receive sides, is considered. In this system, a novel scheme is presented to suppress intersymbol interference and to demodulate coherently the information symbols with estimated channel state information. The proposed algorithm is powerful and computationally efficient. In addition to the discussion of system identifiability, both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed estimator and receiver in multipath fading channels.  相似文献

Modern wireless communications require an efficient spectrum usage and high channel capacity and throughput. Multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO), Linear equalizers, multi-user detection and multicarrier code-division multiple access (MC-CDMA) are possible solutions to achieve spectral efficiency, high channel capacity, eliminate multiple access interference (MAI), eliminate Inter symbol interference (ISI) and robustness against frequency selective fading. In this paper, we combine all these techniques and investigate BER performance. We propose a low complexity receiver structure for Single-input Multiple-output (SIMO) downlink MC-CDMA systems. It employs an interference cancellation scheme to suppress the interference caused by the multipath fading channel. Also, the proposed scheme is developed for MIMO MC-CDMA system. The performance analysis of Downlink MIMO MC-CDMA systems with V-BLAST over frequency selective fading channel is investigated under various number of transmit and receive antennas. The simulation results show proposed SIMO equalization with parallel interference cancellation scheme is effective in reducing the ISI and the MAI. It improves the performance significantly and the simulation results show that MIMO MC-CDMA with V-BLAST multi-user detection provides high data rate and the BER significant improvement.  相似文献

Antenna diversity in multiuser data networks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We consider the use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and/or the receiver to provide open-loop spatial diversity in a multiuser wireless data network. With channel quality information (CQI) available to the transmitter, and by always scheduling the transmission to the active user having the best channel conditions at the time of scheduling, another form of diversity, termed multiuser diversity, is obtained in a data system. This paper provides an analysis of the interaction between these two forms of diversity. From a network point of view, we prove that the asymptotic sum rate, in the limit of a large number of active homogeneous users and subject to the same average total transmit power, is inversely related to the number of transmit antennas for independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) flat Rayleigh fading channels. In the case of i.i.d. flat Rician fading, the asymptotic sum rate also depends inversely on the number of transmit antennas, but directly on the number of receive antennas. Numerically, we show that the total diversity gain is also constrained by finite CQI quantization and channel fading statistics.  相似文献

On the use of a suppression filter for CDMA overlay   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
This paper is concerned with a direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) system operating over a Rayleigh fading channel and sharing a common spectrum with a narrow-band waveform. A suppression filter at the receiver is employed to reduce the narrow-band interference. We evaluate the average up-link bit error rate (BER) performance and investigate how the performance is influenced by various parameters, such as the number of taps of the suppression filter, the number of multiple-access users, the ratio of narrow-band interference bandwidth to the spread-spectrum bandwidth, the interference power to signal power ratio, the ratio of the offset of the interference carrier frequency from the spread-spectrum carrier frequency to the half spread-spectrum signal bandwidth, and so on  相似文献

The presence of both multiple-access interference (MAI) and intersymbol interference (ISI) constitutes a major impediment to reliable communications in multipath code-division multiple-access (CDMA) channels. In this paper, an iterative receiver structure is proposed for decoding multiuser information data in a convolutionally coded asynchronous multipath DS-CDMA system. The receiver performs two successive soft-output decisions, achieved by a soft-input soft-output (SISO) multiuser detector and a bank of single-user SISO channel decoders, through an iterative process. At each iteration, extrinsic information is extracted from detection and decoding stages and is then used as a priori information in the next iteration, just as in turbo decoding. Given the multipath CDMA channel model, a direct implementation of a sliding-window SISO multiuser detector has a prohibitive computational complexity. A low-complexity SISO multiuser detector is developed based on a novel nonlinear interference suppression technique, which makes use of both soft interference cancellation and instantaneous linear minimum mean-square error filtering. The properties of such a nonlinear interference suppressor are examined, and an efficient recursive implementation is derived. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed low complexity iterative receiver structure for interference suppression and decoding offers significant performance gain over the traditional noniterative receiver structure. Moreover, at high signal-to-noise ratio, the detrimental effects of MAI and ISI in the channel can almost be completely overcome by iterative processing, and single-user performance can be approached  相似文献

Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) is currently being standardized as an evolution of GSM in Europe and of IS-136 in the United States as an air interface for high speed data services for third generation mobile systems. In this paper, we study space-time processing for EDGE to provide interference suppression. We consider the use of two receive antennas and propose a joint equalization and diversity receiver. This receiver uses feedforward filters on each diversity branch to perform minimum mean-square error cochannel interference suppression, while leaving the intersymbol interference to be mitigated by the subsequent equalizer. The equalizer is a delayed decision feedback sequence estimator, consisting of a reduced-state Viterbi processor and a feedback filter. The equalizer provides soft output to the channel decoder after deinterleaving. We describe a novel weight generation algorithm and present simulation results on the link performance of EDGE with interference suppression. These results show a significant improvement in the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) performance due to both diversity (against fading) and interference suppression. At a 10% block error rate, the proposed receiver provides a 20 dB improvement in SIR for both the typical urban and hilly terrain profiles  相似文献

Limited feedback unitary precoding for orthogonal space-time block codes   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs) are a class of easily decoded space-time codes that achieve full diversity order in Rayleigh fading channels. OSTBCs exist only for certain numbers of transmit antennas and do not provide array gain like diversity techniques that exploit transmit channel information. When channel state information is available at the transmitter, though, precoding the space-time codeword can be used to support different numbers of transmit antennas and to improve array gain. Unfortunately, transmitters in many wireless systems have no knowledge about current channel conditions. This motivates limited feedback precoding methods such as channel quantization or antenna subset selection. This paper investigates a limited feedback approach that uses a codebook of precoding matrices known a priori to both the transmitter and receiver. The receiver chooses a matrix from the codebook based on current channel conditions and conveys the optimal codebook matrix to the transmitter over an error-free, zero-delay feedback channel. A criterion for choosing the optimal precoding matrix in the codebook is proposed that relates directly to minimizing the probability of symbol error of the precoded system. Low average distortion codebooks are derived based on the optimal codeword selection criterion. The resulting design is found to relate to the famous applied mathematics problem of subspace packing in the Grassmann manifold. Codebooks designed by this method are proven to provide full diversity order in Rayleigh fading channels. Monte Carlo simulations show that limited feedback precoding performs better than antenna subset selection.  相似文献

MIMO CDMA antenna system for SINR enhancement   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present a system to enhance signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS/CDMA) communications in the downlink for frequency-selective fading environments. The proposed system utilizes a transmit antenna array at the base station and a receive antenna array at the mobile station with finite-impulse response filters at both the transmitter and receiver. We arrive at our system by attempting to find the optimal solution to a general MIMO antenna system. A single user joint optimum scenario and a multiuser SINR enhancement scenario are derived. In addition, a simplified one-finger receiver structure is introduced. Numerical results reveal that significant system performance and capacity improvement over conventional approaches are possible. We also investigate the sensitivity of the proposed system to channel estimation errors.  相似文献
