Open cell, stochastic nickel foams are widely used for the electrodes and current collectors of metal – metal hydride batteries. Closed cell, periodic aluminum honeycomb is extensively used for the cores of light, stiff sandwich panel structures. Interest is now growing in other cell topologies and potential applications are expanding. For example cellular metals are being evaluated for impact energy absorption, for noise and vibration damping and for novel approaches to thermal management. Numerous methods for manufacturing cellular metals are being developed. As a basic understanding of the relationships between cell topology and the performance of cellular metals in each application area begins to emerge, interest is growing in processes that enable an optimized topology to be reproducibly created. For some applications, such as acoustic attenuation, stochastic metal foams are likely to be preferred over their periodically structured counterparts. Nonetheless, the average cell s ize, the cell size standard deviation, the relative density and the microstructure of the ligaments are all important to control. The invention of more stable processes and improved methods for on‐line control of the cellular structure via in‐situ sensing and more sophisticated control algorithms are likely to lead to significant improvements in foam topology. For load supporting applications, sandwich panels containing honeycomb cores are much superior to those utilizing stochastic foams, but they are more costly than stochastic foam core materials. Recently, processes have begun to emerge for making open cell periodic cell materials with triangular or pyramidal truss topologies. These have been shown to match the stiffness and strength of honeycomb in sandwich panels. New cellular metals manufacturing processes that use metal textiles and deformed sheet metal are being explored as potentially low cost manufacturing processes for these applications. Obviously, one of the major problems in manufacturing is to reduce cost. To do so, various activities such as Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Total Quality Management (TQM), Industrial Engineering (IE) and Just-in-Time (JIT) are often carried out. However, many companies recognize that these activities do not necessarily guarantee cost reduction even if they have been implemented successfully. In the worst case, manufacturing cost rises with the introduction of such activities. This is an important issue in manufacturing, but strangely in the academic literature there have been no studies that have been addressed directly to the methodology of manufacturing cost reduction. The aim was to develop a good method that establishes a cost-reduction programme scientifically and systematically. This method, termed 'manufacturing cost deployment', is a very powerful tool to identify production losses to reduce costs. A simple algorithm to establish a cost-reduction programme is presented and one case study is given. 相似文献

This work aims to investigate the manufacturing equipment support model for the purpose of improving the efficiency and quality of manufacturing. First,the concept of manufacturing capacity is defined,and the relationship between practical and expected manufacturing capacity is described. Then the concept of role is introduced and the manufacturing equipment role is defined in detail. Based on the analysis of manufacturing capacity and manufacturing equipment role,the three-stage manufacturing equipment support model is proposed. With this model,the manufacturing task can be decomposed into several manufacturing equipment roles,and the expended manufacturing capacity involved in the manufacturing equipment role can be matched with the practical manufacturing capacity of the enterprise. A survey of 47 manufacturing companies in the Pacific Northwest was taken during the development of a new manufacturing engineering curriculum at Seattle University. The survey asked companies to comment on current and future manufacturing practices and on curriculum recommendations for a new manufacturing engineering program. This paper presents the results of a Delphi inquiry carried out to determine the short and long range technology needs and plans of small and medium sized manufacturers in the Pacific Northwest. Policy directions which cooperative research centers might adopt to aid these enterprises are also examined. Delphi results demonstrated a strong consensus that many types of advanced manufacturing technologies will be used widely by the year 2000 and that their adoption is correlated with company size, net income, and gross sales volume. Functions and types of industrial robots forecasted for use are discussed as well as are timetables for the first use of various technologies. Industry-University cooperative research centers may best serve the needs of manufacturing firms by providing improved educational skills, improved information flow on assessment of technologies, and research in technologies likely to be implemented. 相似文献
