Bshouty, Goldman, Hancock and Matar have shown that up to term DNF formulas can be properly learned in the exact model with equivalence and membership queries. Given standard complexity-theoretical assumptions, we show that this positive result for proper learning cannot be significantly improved in the exact model or the PAC model extended to allow membership queries. Our negative results are derived from two general techniques for proving such results in the exact model and the extended PAC model. As a further application of these techniques, we consider read-thrice DNF formulas. Here we improve on Aizenstein, Hellerstein, and Pitt's negative result for proper learning in the exact model in two ways. First, we show that their assumption of NP co-NP can be replaced with the weaker assumption of P NP. Second, we show that read-thrice DNF formulas are not properly learnable in the extended PAC model, assuming RP NP.  相似文献

Agent-based technology has been identified as an important approach for developing next generation manufacturing systems. One of the key techniques needed for implementing such advanced systems will be learning. This paper first discusses learning issues in agent-based manufacturing systems and reviews related approaches, then describes how to enhance the performance of an agent-based manufacturing system through learning from history (based on distributed case-based learning and reasoning) and learning from the future (through system forecasting simulation). Learning from history is used to enhance coordination capabilities by minimizing communication and processing overheads. Learning from the future is used to adjust promissory schedules through forecasting simulation, by taking into account the shop floor interactions, production and transportation time. Detailed learning and reasoning mechanisms are described and partial experimental results are presented.  相似文献

In this essay I will consider two theses that are associated with Frege,and will investigate the extent to which Frege really believed them.Much of what I have to say will come as no surprise to scholars of thehistorical Frege. But Frege is not only a historical figure; he alsooccupies a site on the philosophical landscape that has allowed hisdoctrines to seep into the subconscious water table. And scholars in a widevariety of different scholarly establishments then sip from thesedoctrines. I believe that some Frege-interested philosophers at various ofthese establishments might find my conclusions surprising.Some of these philosophical establishments have arisen from an educationalmilieu in which Frege is associated with some specific doctrine at theexpense of not even being aware of other milieux where other specificdoctrines are given sole prominence. The two theses which I will discussillustrate this point. Each of them is called Frege's Principle, but byphilosophers from different milieux. By calling them milieux I do not want to convey the idea that they are each located at some specificsocio-politico-geographico-temporal location. Rather, it is a matter oftheir each being located at different places on the intellectuallandscape. For this reason one might (and I sometimes will) call them(interpretative) traditions.  相似文献

Concept learning in robotics is an extremely challenging problem: sensory data is often high dimensional, and noisy due to specularities and other irregularities. In this paper, we investigate two general strategies to speed up learning, based on spatial decomposition of the sensory representation, and simultaneous learning of multiple classes using a shared structure. We study two concept learning scenarios: a hallway navigation problem, where the robot has to induce features such as opening or wall. The second task is recycling, where the robot has to learn to recognize objects, such as a trash can. We use a common underlying function approximator in both studies in the form of a feedforward neural network, with several hundred input units and multiple output units. Despite the high degree of freedom afforded by such an approximator, we show the two strategies provide sufficient bias to achieve rapid learning. We provide detailed experimental studies on an actual mobile robot called PAVLOV to illustrate the effectiveness of this approach.  相似文献

This paper investigates what happens when a learning algorithm for a classC attempts to learn target formulas from a different class. In many cases, the learning algorithm will find a bad attribute or a property of the target formula which precludes its membership in the classC. To continue the learning process, we proceed by building a decision tree according to the possible values of this attribute (divide) and recursively run the learning algorithm for each value (conquer). This paper shows how to recursively run the learning algorithm for each value using the oracles of the target.We demonstrate that the application of this idea on some known learning algorithms can both simplify the algorithm and provide additional power to learn more classes. In particular, we give a simple exact learning algorithm, using membership and equivalence queries, for the class of DNF that is almost unate, that is, unate with the addition ofO (logn) nonunate variables and a constant number of terms. We also find algorithms in different models for boolean functions that depend onk terms.  相似文献

The role of craft language in the process of teaching (learning) Waza (skill) will be discussed from the perspective of human intelligence.It may be said that the ultimate goal of learning Waza in any Japanese traditional performance is not the perfect reproduction of the teaching (learning) process of Waza. In fact, a special metaphorical language (craft language) is used, which has the effect of encouraging the learner to activate his creative imagination. Given a finite setE R n, the problem is to find clusters (or subsets of similar points inE) and at the same time to find the most typical elements of this set. An original mathematical formulation is given to the problem. The proposed algorithm operates on groups of points, called samplings (samplings may be called multiple centers or cores); these samplings adapt and evolve into interesting clusters. Compared with other clustering algorithms, this algorithm requires less machine time and storage. We provide some propositions about nonprobabilistic convergence and a sufficient condition which ensures the decrease of the criterion. Some computational experiments are presented.  相似文献

This article studies self-directed learning, a variant of the on-line (or incremental) learning model in which the learner selects the presentation order for the instances. Alternatively, one can view this model as a variation of learning with membership queries in which the learner is only charged for membership queries for which it could not predict the outcome. We give tight bounds on the complexity of self-directed learning for the concept classes of monomials, monotone DNF formulas, and axis-parallel rectangles in {0, 1, , n – 1} d . These results demonstrate that the number of mistakes under self-directed learning can be surprisingly small. We then show that learning complexity in the model of self-directed learning is less than that of all other commonly studied on-line and query learning models. Next we explore the relationship between the complexity of self-directed learning and the Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC-)dimension. We show that, in general, the VC-dimension and the self-directed learning complexity are incomparable. However, for some special cases, we show that the VC-dimension gives a lower bound for the self-directed learning complexity. Finally, we explore a relationship between Mitchell's version space algorithm and the existence of self-directed learning algorithms that make few mistakes.  相似文献

This paper presents a polynomial-time algorithm for inferring a probabilistic generalization of the class of read-once Boolean formulas over the usual basis {AND, OR, NOT}. The algorithm effectively infers a good approximation of the target formula when provided with random examples which are chosen according to anyproduct distribution, i.e., any distribution in which the setting of each input bit is chosen independently of the settings of the other bits. Since the class of formulas considered includes ordinary read-once Boolean formulas, our result shows that such formulas are PAC learnable (in the sense of Valiant) against any product distribution (for instance, against the uniform distribution). Further, this class of probabilistic formulas includes read-once formulas whose behavior has been corrupted by large amounts of random noise. Such noise may affect the formula's output (misclassification noise), the input bits (attribute noise), or it may affect the behavior of individual gates of the formula. Thus, in this setting, we show that read-once formula's can be inferred (approximately), despite large amounts of noise affecting the formula's behavior.  相似文献

We analyze the Ohya-Masuda quantum algorithm that solves the so-called satisfiability problem, which is an NP-complete problem of the complexity theory. We distinguish three steps in the algorithm, and analyze the second step, in which a coherent superposition of states (a pure state) transforms into an incoherent mixture presented by a density matrix. We show that, if nonideal (in analogy with nonideal quantum measurement), this transformation can make the algorithm to fail in some cases. On this basis we give some general notions on the physical implementation of the Ohya-Masuda algorithm.  相似文献

Symmetry-breaking formulas for a constraint-satisfaction problem are satisfied by exactly one member (e.g., the lexicographic leader) from each set of symmetrical points in the search space. Thus, the incorporation of such formulas can accelerate the search for a solution without sacrificing satisfiability. We study the computational complexity of generating lex-leader formulas. We show, even for abelian symmetry groups, that the number of essential clauses in the natural lex-leader formula could be exponential. Furthermore, we show the intractability (NP-hardness) of finding any expression of lex-leadership without reordering the variables, even for elementary abelian groups with orbits of size 3. Nevertheless, using techniques of computational group theory, we describe a reordering relative to which we construct small lex-leader formulas for abelian groups.  相似文献

The adaptiveness of agents is one of the basic conditions for the autonomy. This paper describes an approach of adaptiveness forMonitoring Cognitive Agents based on the notion of generic spaces. This notion allows the definition of virtual generic processes so that any particular actual process is then a simple configuration of the generic process, that is to say a set of values of parameters. Consequently, generic domain ontology containing the generic knowledge for solving problems concerning the generic process can be developed. This lead to the design of Generic Monitoring Cognitive Agent, a class of agent in which the whole knowledge corpus is generic. In other words, modeling a process within a generic space becomes configuring a generic process and adaptiveness becomes genericity, that is to say independence regarding technology. In this paper, we present an application of this approach on Sachem, a Generic Monitoring Cognitive Agent designed in order to help the operators in operating a blast furnace. Specifically, the NeuroGaz module of Sachem will be used to present the notion of a generic blast furnace. The adaptiveness of Sachem can then be noted through the low cost of the deployment of a Sachem instance on different blast furnaces and the ability of NeuroGaz in solving problem and learning from various top gas instrumentation.  相似文献

Workflow Management Systems (WFMSs) are often used in context of B2B integration as a base technology to implement business-to-business (B2B) integration processes across enterprises. In this context the notion of distributed inter-organizational workflows is introduced to indicate the collaboration of enterprises on a process level. This notion requires a thorough examination presented in this article since WFMSs were not designed with inter-enterprise distribution as one of the design goals. At a closer look, the proposed use of WFMSs in context of B2B integration is often very naïve and inappropriate. Consequently it does not address the real requirements found in enterprises. Enterprises do not share common workflow definitions, let alone common workflow instance execution state and have no intent to do so due to competitive knowledge protection. Furthermore, trading partner specific business rules within enterprises are not accounted for leading to an unwanted explosion of workflow definitions. This article clarifies the notion of distributed inter-organizational workflows as well as private and public processes. Based on this definition, the appropriate use of WFMSs is shown in context of an overall B2B integration solution that allows enterprises to protect their competitive knowledge while participating in B2B integration.  相似文献

Quantification in first-order logic always involves all elements of the universe. However, it is often more natural to just quantify over those elements of the universe which satisfy a certain condition. Constrained logics therefore provide restricted quantifiers X:R F and X:R F whereX is a set of variables, and which can be read as F holds for all elements satisfying the restrictionR and F holds if there exists an element which satisfiesR. In order to test satisfiability of a set of such formulas by means of an appropriately extended resolution principle, one needs a procedure which transforms them into a set of clauses with constraints. Such a procedure essentially differs from the classical transformation of first-oder formulas into a set of clauses, in particular since quantification over the empty set may occur and since the needed Skolemization procedure has to take the restrictions of restricted quantifiers into account. In the first part of this article we present a procedure that transforms formulas with restricted quantifiers into a set of clauses with constraints while preserving satisfiability. The thus obtained clauses are of the formC R whereC is an ordinary clause andR is a restriction, and can be read as C holds ifR holds. These clauses can now be tested on unsatisfiability via the existingconstrained resolution principle. In the second part we generalize the constrained resolution principle in such a way that it allows for further optimization, and we introduce a combination of unification and constraint solving that can be employed to instantiate this kind of optimization.  相似文献

In traditional approaches to object-oriented programming, objects are active, while relations between them are passive. The activeness of an object reveals itself when the object invokes a method (function) as a reaction to a message from another object (or itself). While this model is suitable for some tasks, like arranging interactions between windows, widgets and the end-user in a typical GUI environment, it's not appropriate for others. Business applications development is one of the examples. In this domain, relations between conceptual objects are at least as important as objects themselves and the more appropriate model for this field would be the one where relations are active while objects are passive. A version of such a model is presented in the paper. The model considers a system as consisting of a set of objects, a code of laws, and a set of connectors, each connector hanging on a group of objects that must obey a certain law. The formal logical semantics of this model is presented as a way of analyzing the set of all possible trajectories of all possible systems. The analysis allows to differentiate valid trajectories from invalid ones. The procedural semantics is presented as a state machine that given an initial state, generates all possible trajectories that can be derived from this state. This generator can be considered as a model of a connectors scheduler that allows various degrees of parallelism, from sequential execution to the maxim possible parallelism. In conclusion, a programming language that could be appropriate for the proposed computer environment is discussed, and the problems of applying the model to the business domain are outlined.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel incremental algorithm that combines Q-learning, a well-known dynamic-programming based reinforcement learning method, with the TD() return estimation process, which is typically used in actor-critic learning, another well-known dynamic-programming based reinforcement learning method. The parameter is used to distribute credit throughout sequences of actions, leading to faster learning and also helping to alleviate the non-Markovian effect of coarse state-space quantization. The resulting algorithm, Q()-learning, thus combines some of the best features of the Q-learning and actor-critic learning paradigms. The behavior of this algorithm has been demonstrated through computer simulations.  相似文献

Many teachers adopt networked collaborative learning strategies even though these approaches systematically increase the time needed to deal with a given subject. But who's making them do it?. Probably there has to be a return on investment, in terms of time and obviously in terms of educational results, which justifies that commitment. After surveying the particular features of two experimental projects based on networked collaborative learning, the paper will then offer a series of thoughts triggered by observation of the results and the dynamics generated by this specific approach. The purpose of these thoughts is to identify some key factors that make it possible to measure the real added value produced by network collaboration in terms of the acquisition of skills, knowledge, methods and attitudes that go beyond the mere learning of contents (however fundamental this may be). And it is precisely on the basis of these considerations that teachers usually answer the above question, explaining who (or what) made them do it!.  相似文献
