Sternocleidomastoid muscle regional flaps and its application in oral maxillofacial surgery

The sternocleidomastoid muscle regional flaps were used in oral maxillofacial surgery, head and neck surgery, and plastic surgery. The occipital and the superior thyroid arteries and the branch of the thyrocervical trunk supply the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The sternocleidomastoid muscle regional flaps include sternocleidomastoid muscle flap, sternocleidomastoid myocutaneous flap, sternocleido-mastoid muscle myofascia flap; and sternocleidomastoid muscle myosseus flap and sternocleidomastoid musclemyoperioteal flap. The sternocleidomastoid muscle regional flaps were used to prevent Frey＇ s syndrome and to maintain facial cintour following parotidectomy, to reconstruct mandible, to close gastric tube-tracheal fistula or esophagopharygeal fistula, to perform intraoral reconstruction including tongue, floor of the mouth, and bucca. The sternocleidomastoid muscle regional flaps is simple to use and useful for reconstruction of the oral maxillofacial defect. Excellent outcome could be obtained by selecting suitable indications for the sternocleidomastoid muscle regional flaps, knowing fully the regional anatomy, and operating earet＇ully.
