Abstract:The Eddy Current Testing (ECT) method is one of the most commonly used nondestructive testing method for defect detection of metal materials. In this paper, a new ECT method was proposed for improving the shortcomings of the traditional ECT method, which is difficult to miniaturize. The excitation and testing coil of the traditional ECT method were replaced by a small permanent magnet and a high-precision magnetic sensor, respectively. The principle and testing effect of the new ECT method were investigated by using experimental and numerical simulation method. The results show that the principle of the new ECT method is feasible, the device is simple and the testing accuracy is higher. Defects with diameter of 50 μm could be detected under the present paper. The component of the induced magnetic field in the direction of conductor movement and the magnetization direction of the permanent magnet exhibited symmetric negative pulse and sinusoidal changes, respectively. The optimal moving velocity of conductor and lift-off distance should be several m/s and 0.2 mm.
