Effects of stem-leaf ratio on quality of slurry processed reconstituted tobacco for heated tobacco products

Abstract:  Objective  In this paper, the effect of different stem-leaf ratio on the quality of slurry processed reconstituted tobacco for HTP cigarettes was studied, which can provide theoretical basis for the development of the slurry processed reconstituted tobacco.  Methods  Different reconstituted tobacco samples, with various stem-leaf ratio of 0:10, 1:9, 2:8, 3:7, 4:6 and 5:5, were prepared as research objects. The tensile strength, quantitative and loose thickness, thermal weight loss and sensory quality of the prepared samples were detected and compared.  Results  The results show that: (1) With the increase of the proportion of tobacco stem, the quantitative and tensile strength of reconstituted tobacco decreased, but the bulk increased. (2) The total weight loss ratio of reconstituted tobacco can be divided into three stages. For the sample prepared by tobacco leaf (no stem), the ratio of weight loss and the maximum weight loss rate were lower in the first stage, but higher in the second and third stages. After adding tobacco stem, the weight loss ratio and maximum weight loss rate of slurry processed reconstituted tobacco in the first stage were significantly higher than that of the reconstituted tobacco prepared by tobacco leaf (no stem). Furthermore, with the increase of the addition ratio of tobacco stem, the weight loss ratio of the reconstituted tobacco in the second stage was gradually decreased, but the weight loss ratio of the reconstituted tobacco in the third stage was gradually increased. The maximum weight loss rate in the three stages can be ranked as: the second weight loss stage> the third weight loss stage> the first weight loss stage. (3) As the proportion of tobacco stem increased, the peak value of the first heat flow exothermic peak of reconstituted tobacco leaf gradually decreased. Furthermore, the heat flow curve of the samples with 2:8 and 3:7 stem-leaf ratio showed higher signal response value than other samples. (4) When the stem-leaf ratio was 2:8, the total score of sensory evaluation was the highest, and the comprehensive sensory quality was better than other samples.  Conclusion  The suitable stem-leaf ratio can not only reduce the cost of slurry processed reconstituted tobacco, but also increase its bulk and enhance its comprehensive sensory quality.
