DISCOMYCETE SYSTEMATICS TODAY: A LOOK AT SOME UNANSWERED QUESTIONS IN A GROUP OF UNITUNICATE ASCOMYCETES

Two priorities for continued systematic studies of the Discomycetes are defined: a need for traditional alpha-taxonomic methods coupled with extensive collecting, particularly in poorly-collected areas of the world, and the study of interrelationships among Discomycetes and lichenized Ascomycotina as well as the possible relationships of "isolated" orders and families. A new genus. Leucovibrissea, is proposed, raised from sectional rank. and placed as one of three genera in a new family, Vibrisseaceae, of the Leotiales. The current status of systematics in some selected groups is discussed, and a few unanswered but presumably fundamental biological questions are highlighted.
