On Functionalist Translation Theory and Literary Translation

There is a hot debate among critics on whether the functionalist translation theory is appropriate to the translation of literary texts or not.In the English versions of Chinese classical poems translated by Ezra Pound,A Dream of Red Mansions translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang,Six Chapters of A Floating Life translated by Lin Yutang,behind the greatly different translation methods of the three translators exist the different translation purposes.Purposes justify means,which is the core of functionalist translation theory.Therefore,functionalist translation theory is applicable to literary translation.
