The transition of formerly stateowned monopolies for postal, telephone and telegraphy services to modern telecommunication companies took a rather long time in Europe compared to the USA. The market changed only considerably due to substantial international pressure (technology, Internet, convergence, globalisation). Today the telecommunication companies face different challenges such as global competition, declining revenues from speech service and the financing and deployment of new mobile phone networks.
