Efficacy of Wet-Wrap Treatment for Severe Childhood Atopic Dermatitis

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of wet-wrap treatment(WWT) for severe childhood atopic dermatitis(AD).Methods A total of 40 children with severe AD were enrolled from Department of Dermatology of Children′s Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from September 2018 to September 2019,whose diagnosis was based on the Williams′ diagnostic criteria and SCOR atopic dermatitis(SCORAD)score was more than 50. They were randomly divided into the WWT group(n=20) and the traditional topical group(n=20) to be treated with 0.1% mometasone furoate and 2% mupirocin by WWT or topical treatment only for 5 days. After each treatment,the changes of SCORAD and visual analog scale(VAS) scores were evaluated and compared. Results The SCORAD and VAS scores of the WWT group were 62.53±7.33 and 6.55±1.15 respectively before the treatment,and significantly decreased to 20.71±3.40 and 0.35±0.49 respectively after the treatment(P<0.01).The SCORAD scores reductions were significantly higher in the WWT group than that in the traditional topical group(41.83±6.61 vs. 28.52±6.67,P<0.01). No significant differences was observed in the VAS score reductions between two groups( 6.20±1.28 vs.5.50±1.28)(P>0.05). Five patients in WWT group reported discomfort induced by wetness during the treatment.Conclusion WWT shows rapid efficacy and less adverse reactions in the treatment of severe childhood AD,and its therapeutic effect is superior to that of traditional topical treatment.
