Abstract:Forests incorporating biomass and soil organic carbon(SOC) storage maintain most of the continent carbon(C). Therefore studies on estimation and distribution of both biomass C and SOC in the local forests become hot issues under the background of global change. Based on the data from sampling plots setted up in three typical oak forests located at different altitude levels of Baotianman,we compare the distribution patterns of biomass C and SOC storage of these oak forests. Our results show that both above-and below-ground biomass C storage increase as altitudes increase, whereas the ratios of above-to below-ground C storages decrease simultaneously. SOC storage in 0 ~ 10,10 ~ 20 and 20 ~ 30 cm depth soil layers show an unimodal curve as altitude increases,SOC storage increases initially but decreases as altitude continues to increase. This trend is mainly caused by SOC of the bottom layers. It is interesting that total C storage of three oak forests does not vary significantly(p > 0. 05) as altitudes increase,This result implies an offset effect between biomass C and SOC storage.
