弗兰西斯·培根作为实验科学的始祖,一生官运亨通,但其志在为自然科学发展清除障碍,开通道路。他批判经院哲学,建立其唯物主义理论大厦;倡导辩证法及归纳法,构建人们的思想模式;独创全新的实验法,为科学发展提供一个全新的方法论体系;大力推崇科学,高喊“知识就是力量”。但他终究是资产阶级新贵族的代言人,其思想言行受其阶级性、时代性的限制,不可能不带有局限性,如好侵略、轻视劳动人民和体力劳动、机械论、思想的中庸性等,不可能不对自然科学的发展起一定的阻碍作用。
