Development of Chinese nurses'public image questionnare and its validity

Objective To develop a questionnaire for investigating nurses'public image,and test its reliability and validity.Methods Bandura's"social cognitive theory"was used as the conceptual framework of the questionnaire,with the initial items formulated and modified through expert consultation and pilot test.Totally,203 members of the public were enrolled for the investigation to test the validity and reliability.Results The final questionnaire contained 33 items,of which 23 were of scales and 10 of non-scale choices.The item content validity index of the non-scale choices was 1.00 and overall content validity index was 1.00.By the exploratory factor analysis,the scale-contained items composed five factors(career impression,social influence,career influence,environment influence and behavior/choice),explaining 61.86%variance.The scale content validity index was 0.95,and the item content validity index ranged from 0.86 to 1.00.The Cronbach'sαof the finalized scale and its five factors was 0.848 and 0.683-0.822,respectively.The test-retest reliability of the finalized scale was 0.984.Conclusion The questionnaire on nurses'public image proves to be reliable and valid,and it can be used as an available tool to evaluate nurses'image in China.
